responsibilities <strong>of</strong> contemporary teachers.<br />

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS 3 credits (20 clinical hours)<br />
Design, adaptation, and preparation <strong>of</strong> instructional materials using graphics, transparency production,<br />
video equipment, computer authoring s<strong>of</strong>tware, mounting and laminating processes, photography,<br />
and other procedures.<br />

215 THE CHILD, THE FAMILY, AND SCHOOL 2 credits (10 clinical/field hours)<br />
Prerequisite: 5100:210, 211; admission to Teacher Education Program. <strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this course<br />
is to learn about why we create reciprocal working relationships with parents and methods <strong>of</strong> creating<br />
these types <strong>of</strong> relationships.<br />
310 INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION 3 credits (10 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisite: 7400:265. Provides the student with background information on who is serviced,<br />
types <strong>of</strong> programs available, role <strong>of</strong> the adults and goals <strong>of</strong> early childhood education.<br />
315 ISSUES AND TRENDS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION 3 credits (10 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisite: 7400:265. In-depth examination <strong>of</strong> issues impacting on children from birth to kindergarten,<br />
their families and the early childhood three to grade three educational process.<br />
316 KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION 4 credits<br />
Prerequisite: 7400:265, 5100:210 and 211, admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
Developmentally appropriate curriculum for five- and six-year old children will be explored. <strong>The</strong><br />
educational, social and political issues impacting kindergarten programming will be identified.<br />
319 INTEGRATED EXPRESSIVE ARTS 3 credits (5 field hours and 10 clinical hours)<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education and 7100:210 or 7500:201. Use <strong>of</strong> expressive arts<br />
as a means for young children to represent their thinking and to enhance their learning <strong>of</strong> curriculum<br />

321 INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: MODERN LANGUAGES – K-8 3 credits<br />
Focus on theories <strong>of</strong> language acquisition, models <strong>of</strong> instruction suited to teaching foreign languages<br />
and cultures in the elementary school (K-8), and strategies that promote appropriate levels<br />
<strong>of</strong> language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency and competency for young learners.<br />
325 ADVANCED EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM 4 credits (33 field and 27 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisite: admitted to teacher education program and 5500:310, 311; 7400:265, 270, and 280.<br />
To teach skills for curriculum development for half- and full-day programs for children 3-6 with an<br />
emphasis on authentic assessment, projects, and state/national standards.<br />
333 TEACHING SCIENCE TO YOUNG CHILDREN 3 credits<br />
Prerequisites: 5500:310, 311 or instructor permission. Development <strong>of</strong> a point <strong>of</strong> view toward<br />
science teaching and study <strong>of</strong> methods <strong>of</strong> presenting science material.<br />
338 TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES TO YOUNG CHILDREN 3 credits<br />
Prerequisites: 5500:310, 311 or instructor permission; admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
Trends in social studies instruction in early childhood/middle level classrooms will be discussed<br />
as well as varied means <strong>of</strong> implementing programs.<br />
342 TEACHING MATH TO YOUNG CHILDREN 3 credits<br />
Prerequisites: 5500:310, 311 or instructor permission; admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
Trends in mathematics instruction in early childhood/middle level classrooms. Procedures for the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> mathematics concepts and skills.<br />
355 LANGUAGE AND LITERACY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD 3 credits<br />
Prerequisite: 5500:310 and 7400:265. A framework for the development <strong>of</strong> literacy from birth to age 8.<br />
Factors influencing emerging literacy will be explored. Emphasis on young children’s literature.<br />
360 TEACHING IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER 2 credits (10 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisite: 7400:280, 270. Corequisite: 370. Assists students with the integration <strong>of</strong> knowledge, skills,<br />
attitudes and values learned in the pre-kindergarten program as they participate with young children.<br />
365 COMPREHENSIVE MUSICIANSHIP FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD 3 credits<br />
Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program. Designed to afford a prospective<br />
classroom teacher the opportunity to develop individual musical skills in creativity, performance,<br />
and listening as a means <strong>of</strong> enhancing teaching through use <strong>of</strong> music.<br />
370 EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER LABORATORY 2 credits (53 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisites: 7400:280, 270. Corequisite: 360. This lab is an integrated practical experience in the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s Center for Child Development under the direction <strong>of</strong> experienced teachers.<br />
395 FIELD EXPERIENCE 1-3 credits<br />
Independent field work in area selected by student’s advisor, based on student’s needs.<br />
420 INTEGRATED PRIMARY CURRICULUM 4 credits (25 field and 35 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisite: admission to teacher education program, and 5100:210, 211; 5500:310, 311. Course<br />
models an inquiry-based format that integrates math, science, social studies, and technology standards<br />
where students learn how to create, implement, manage, and evaluate student-centered<br />
learning environments.<br />
425 ADVANCED INTEGRATED PRIMARY CURRICULUM 4 credits (25 field and 35 clinical hours)<br />
Prerequisite: admission to teacher education program; 420. This course further explores an inquirybased<br />
format that integrates math, science, social studies, and technology standards by having students<br />
implement, manage, and evaluate their own and their students’ learning.<br />
