Requirements<br />
A minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 hours is required.<br />
<strong>The</strong> certificate program in Geographic and Land Information Systems may be<br />
earned independently <strong>of</strong> any degree program. This certificate program has been<br />
designed to provide individuals with the basic entry-level skills necessary for<br />
those seeking positions as GIS Technicians. All courses taken may be applied<br />
toward an A.A.S. degree in Surveying Engineering Technology and/or the B.S.<br />
degree in Surveying and Mapping Technology. Students who do not have experience<br />
or formal training in basic drafting and computer aided drawing must complete<br />
course work in these areas first (see advisor).<br />

Requirements<br />
This program is intended for those who seek training in the teaching <strong>of</strong> English as<br />
a second language (ESL) at the elementary or high school level or who wish to<br />
obtain an initial qualification in teaching ESL in order to teach in settings other<br />
than the Ohio public school system. For Ohio certification in teaching ESL, see<br />
TESOL Validation requirements in Section 4 <strong>of</strong> this Bulletin under the College <strong>of</strong><br />
Education.<br />
† <strong>The</strong> awarding <strong>of</strong> this certificate is not contingent upon completion <strong>of</strong> a degree program.<br />
Undergraduate certificate programs require a 2.00 grade-point average; graduate certificate<br />
programs require a 3.00 grade-point average.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program is designed to introduce the student to the central issues in the<br />
theory and practice <strong>of</strong> teaching English to non-native speakers through courses<br />
in modern and applied linguistics, in second language pedagogy and in<br />
related disciplines.<br />
Students who do not have English as a native language must demonstrate adequate<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in English with a valid TOEFL score <strong>of</strong> at least 550.<br />

This certificate program in technical and skills training is a special course <strong>of</strong> study<br />
within the College <strong>of</strong> Education to serve the practicing or prospective business<br />
and/or industrial-technical trainer. Persons are eligible for admission to the<br />
Certificate in Technical and Skills Training if they have been fully admitted to <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> to study as full-time undergraduate or post-baccalaureate students.<br />
Individuals who already hold undergraduate or graduate degrees may also<br />
pursue this certificate. All course work must be completed within six years.<br />

TRANSPORTATION<br />
PLANNING<br />
Transportation Planning issues are increasingly important for our region and the<br />
nation as a whole. With increases in vehicular traffic and the attendant traffic congestion,<br />
the need for proper and effective planning cannot be overemphasized.<br />
A certificate program in transportation will enable students from a variety <strong>of</strong> fields<br />
ranging from geography to engineering and business to acquire key analytical skills<br />
that would prepare them for careers in transportation planning and management.<br />
<strong>The</strong> program is open to all students in good standing. Full time, special or nondegree<br />
students may participate in the program.
