Requirements<br />
This certificate program is a special course <strong>of</strong> study in gerontology that compliments<br />
undergraduate degree programs in various departments and colleges throughout the<br />
<strong>University</strong>. Individuals who already hold an undergraduate degree may also pursue the<br />
certificate. <strong>The</strong> program represents a concentration involving current knowledge and<br />
research in gerontology. It adds another dimension to the knowledge and skills a student<br />
is able to <strong>of</strong>fer in the many pr<strong>of</strong>essions that are becoming specialized in research<br />
and service to adults and older adults. This course <strong>of</strong> study coordinates multidisciplinary<br />
training <strong>of</strong> personnel in adult development and aging and helps to meet the critical<br />
shortage <strong>of</strong> trained individuals in the field <strong>of</strong> gerontology.<br />
<strong>The</strong> undergraduate curriculum committee <strong>of</strong> the Institute for Life-Span<br />
Development and Gerontology will oversee this certificate program and certify<br />
through the director <strong>of</strong> the institute that all requirements for the certificate have<br />
been completed.<br />
A sequence <strong>of</strong> study is available in Nursing Home Administration through the institute.<br />
<strong>The</strong> undergraduate certificate is included in the Ohio Board <strong>of</strong> Examiners <strong>of</strong><br />
Nursing Home Administrators approved course <strong>of</strong> study in Nursing Home<br />
Administration which combines a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science degree in management<br />
(Human Resource Management Concentration) with a Certificate in Gerontology.<br />
B.S./M.D. students may complete the Practicum/Internship and electives from<br />
courses available from the institute or the Office <strong>of</strong> Geriatric Medicine and<br />
Gerontology, NEOUCOM.<br />
Admission<br />
To participate in the program, a student must:<br />
• Obtain admittance to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> as an undergraduate or postbaccalaureate<br />
student.<br />
• Submit an application to the program countersigned by the student’s major<br />
academic advisor.<br />
• Participate in an interview with the Director or a designated faculty member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology.<br />
• Consult with the Director or a designated faculty member to formulate a program<br />
<strong>of</strong> study.<br />
• Receive written notification <strong>of</strong> admission from the Director <strong>of</strong> the Institute for<br />
Life-Span Development and Gerontology.<br />

HEALTH CARE SELLING<br />

This program provides the student an opportunity to develop and document an<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> selling within the health care industry, an important economic<br />
sector accounting for approximately 10 percent <strong>of</strong> the economic activity in the<br />
U.S. This certificate is designed to serve the needs <strong>of</strong> students preparing for<br />
careers in selling pharmaceutical products, medical supplies and equipment, or<br />
other health care products and services.<br />
A total <strong>of</strong> 15 credits is required for the certificate program. <strong>The</strong> student must<br />
complete 6 credit hours <strong>of</strong> required courses and 9 credit hours must be selected<br />
from a list <strong>of</strong> electives. To be granted the certificate, the student must take at<br />
least 6 credit hours in addition to any other major, minor, or certificate that has<br />
been earned.<br />

This certificate program is a special course <strong>of</strong> study along with the undergraduate<br />
degree programs in various departments and colleges throughout the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Undergraduate students will earn the certificate upon their graduation in their<br />
degree program. Individuals who already hold an undergraduate degree may pursue<br />
the certificate in the postbaccalaureate program. <strong>The</strong> program represents a<br />
concentration in current theoretical knowledge and practice in home-based intervention.<br />
It adds another dimension to the knowledge and skills a student is able<br />
to <strong>of</strong>fer in the many pr<strong>of</strong>essions that relate to services to at-risk children and their<br />
families. This course <strong>of</strong> study coordinates multidisciplinary training <strong>of</strong> personnel in<br />
home-based intervention and helps to meet the need for trained pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in<br />
home-based intervention.<br />
<strong>The</strong> undergraduate curriculum committee <strong>of</strong> the Center for Family Studies will<br />
oversee the certificate program and certify through the certificate program director<br />
that all requirements for the certificate have been completed.
