Music Education<br />
<strong>The</strong> music education curriculum strives to bring each <strong>of</strong> its students to an intellectual<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> the pedagogical, historical, and theoretical aspects <strong>of</strong> musical<br />
performance while demanding the highest levels <strong>of</strong> technical and artistic<br />
development in the teaching and performing <strong>of</strong> music.<br />
In view <strong>of</strong> the heavy educational requirements, students may be required to<br />
attend eight semesters plus one or two summer terms in order to complete the<br />
degree within a four-year period.<br />
• General Education requirement — 42 credits.<br />
• Core curriculum in music — 30 credits.<br />
• Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Education (Including Student Teaching, 5300:495 and Student<br />

Before taking any <strong>of</strong> the upper level music courses (300 and up) the student must<br />
be accepted into the Music Education Program. For acceptance into the Music<br />
Education Program, the student must (a) successfully complete all <strong>of</strong> the above<br />
course work for the first and second years with a grade <strong>of</strong> C or better in all music<br />
course work, (b) have a cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 or higher, (c) have a<br />
score <strong>of</strong> 11 or higher on a scale <strong>of</strong> 15 from the student’s applied teacher, major<br />
conducted ensemble director, music education pr<strong>of</strong>essor, music theory IV pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
and the undergraduate music coordinator, (d) pass the music education jury<br />
and (e) jury to the 200 level on her/his applied instrument.<br />
• One-half recital during 12 months prior to graduation but not during the semester<br />
<strong>of</strong> student teaching except with special permission <strong>of</strong> Area Coordinator.<br />
• Must be enrolled in at least one major conducted ensemble for four years<br />
(eight semesters).<br />
• Jurying to the 300 level on applied instrument is required prior to student<br />
teaching.<br />
7600: Communication<br />
Requirements for transferring into the School <strong>of</strong> Communication<br />
Completion <strong>of</strong> 7600:102, 7600:115, 3300:111 or 2020:121, 3300:121 and<br />
7600:105 or 7600:106 with grade <strong>of</strong> C or better in each course and completion <strong>of</strong><br />
the General Education math requirement is required to transfer into the school as<br />
a major or to enroll in 300-400 level courses in the School <strong>of</strong> Communication.<br />
Courses satisfying the School <strong>of</strong> Communication math requirement include<br />
3450:145 (College Algebra), 3450:135 (Excursions in Mathematics), 3450:141<br />
(Algebra with Business Applications), 3450:210 ( Calculus with Business<br />
Applications), 3470:260 (Basic Statistics), 3470:261 & 262 (Introduction to<br />
Statistics I & II) or their equivalents.<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />
