6400: Finance<br />
<strong>The</strong> primary mission <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Finance is to provide a quality education<br />
to students that will prepare them for leadership positions within the finance<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession in business. Students acquire financial knowledge and skills that can<br />
be applied in a variety <strong>of</strong> environments. <strong>The</strong> study <strong>of</strong> finance prepares students to<br />
understand the financial transactions in today’s global economy. Careers in<br />
finance include corporate finance, investment management, financial markets<br />
and institutions, and personal financial services.<br />
Careers in corporate finance include financial analyst positions in manufacturing,<br />
commercial, and service enterprises where initial assignments might include<br />
financial planning, capital expenditure analysis, cash management, credit management,<br />
lease evaluation, mergers and acquisitions, and special projects. Students<br />
with an interest in investment management are trained for careers as account<br />
executives, security analysts, or portfolio managers in bank trust departments,<br />
securities brokerage firms, investment research firms, and investment banks.<br />
Careers in financial markets and institutions are available in banking, mutual<br />
funds, insurance companies, and other financial institutions. Banking careers<br />
include commercial lending, retail banking, treasury operations, trading, and trust<br />
operations. <strong>The</strong> rapidly expanding financial services field includes careers in personal<br />
financial planning, real estate, and insurance.<br />
<strong>The</strong> finance curriculum <strong>of</strong>fers students the opportunity to study in one <strong>of</strong> two<br />
specific areas <strong>of</strong> specialization – Corporate Financial Management and Financial<br />
Services. Students in the Financial Services program may also achieve a<br />
Concentration in Real Estate or Personal Financial Planning.<br />
To receive a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Business Administration/Finance degree, the student<br />
must successfully complete one or the other <strong>of</strong> these 33-credit-hour programs:<br />
Corporate Financial Management Program<br />
All finance majors must complete four required major (core) courses with an average<br />
grade <strong>of</strong> “C” over the four courses. In addition, students in the Corporate<br />
Financial Management Program must complete five additional courses, one<br />
required and four electives:<br />
