5300: Secondary (Adolescent to<br />
Young Adult) Education<br />

Prior to admission, students must complete 30 credit hours <strong>of</strong> course work with a<br />
2.50 GPA as outlined below. <strong>The</strong>se requirements provide Adolescent to Young<br />
Adult Education, P-12 and Specialty Program majors with the breadth <strong>of</strong> knowledge<br />
they will need to make decisions in the secondary school setting. Students admitted<br />
to Secondary Childhood Education must achieve a grade <strong>of</strong> “C” or higher<br />
in all pr<strong>of</strong>essional education courses to be eligible to student teach and graduate<br />
from the College <strong>of</strong> Education. Other admission requirements are outlined<br />
on the program application form.<br />
<strong>The</strong> program mandates an expert knowledge in a specific content area. This knowledge<br />
prepares and encourages teachers to be decision-makers by adapting and<br />
applying content knowledge to the needs and interests <strong>of</strong> a diverse student population.<br />
Upon graduation with a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts or Science in Education, students are<br />
ready to teach in school settings appropriate to their licensure. For further licensure<br />
and graduation requirements, students should consult a departmental advisor.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>fers teacher licensure in the following areas: Language Arts (7-<br />
12), Math (7-12), Science (7-12), Social Studies (7-12), Foreign Language (P-12),<br />
Visual Arts (P-12), Dance (P-12), Drama/<strong>The</strong>atre (P-12), Music (P-12) and Family and<br />
Consumer Science (4-12)<br />

Requirements for Admission to Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) or P-<br />
12 Specialty Programs<br />
All applicants must successfully complete the following course work prior to<br />
admission into an AYA program.<br />
• Written and Oral Communication – at least 10 credits Credits<br />

Each student preparing for secondary school teaching must complete at least one<br />
teaching field. P-12 indicates that licensure in that field is for preschool through<br />
grade 12. Other fields lead to licensure for grades 7-12 or as noted. Minimum<br />
