Commercial Breeder of the YearPresented on Friday night by the Canadian Red Angus Promotion SocietyThe Canadian Red Angus PromotionSociety would like to congratulate WildorFarms for being recognized as the 2011Commercial Breeder of The Year!The hard prairie grass of east central Albertahas been an integral part in raising some ofthe finest calves sought after by cattle buyers in theprovince and the calves at Wildor Farms are noexception. Wildor Farms is a family run operationlocated northeast of Coronation, Alberta and arethe 2011 Canadian Red Angus Promotion SocietyCommercial Breeders of the Year.Wilf and Doris Sieger and their sons; Wes &Joanne and Danny & Jo-ann have been in the cattlebusiness all their lives. The original homestead islocated 6 miles north of where the farm is now andalthough Wilf who is now 88 still has an active rolein the farming operation; running the seeder andthe swather and having the title as “Consultant”,Wes and Danny run the day to day operations ofWildor farms. While working together on both aspectsof the cropland and the cattle, Danny overseesthe 3000 acres of cropland and Wes is in charge ofthe cattle operation.What was very well known as a purebredCharolais operation, in 2000 a decision was madeto switch the Wildor cowherd to commercial andcrossbreed the Charolais cows. Wes spent 2 yearsgoing to shows and sales looking at other breedstrying to find the right cross all the while knowingthey wanted to use red bulls on the white cows.The decision was made to use Red Angus bulls onthe Charolais cows and as Wes stated “it was a goodchoice.” Seeing the cattle owned by Adams’ andLongshores helped make his decision. “I really likethe Red Angus females and I knew the bulls wouldcross good with my cows and I wanted to end upwith good cows in the end”.The herd of approximately 200 head ofmother cows are almost all straight Angus now withsome tan cows still remaining. The cows calve inApril and May and are generally weaned in Octoberwith the top end weighing 700 lbs plus. All ofthe calves are kept and backgrounded until Februarydepending on the market and sold through theVeteran Auction Mart weighing 900-1000 lbs. Thecalves are generally purchased by the same feedlotyear after year.When Wes is selecting his bulls he looks forperformance and eye appeal. “Calves with eye appealsell better at the market and they have to haveperformance. What began as a purebredPolled Hereford operation in Manitoba, Jimand Laurel King and family moved their ChickadeeFarm to Innisfail, Alberta in 1990 and shortly thereafterpurchased their first Red Angus cows.Jim states “I’ve always liked red hided cattleand wanted to make a switch from the Herefords”and the obvious choice for him was Red Angus.The first Red Angus purchased were a group of 10bred heifers from Ron and Mary Devolin in 1991and the Herefords were then sold. “At the time wepurchased our first Red Angus, the emphasis wason performance testing, and that was an attractionfor me.” “The Red Angus are easy cattle to havearound. They are good working cattle; easy to raise,easy to multiply and are very functional.”It wasn’t long into Chickadee’s Red Anguscareer that they raised the 1996 National ChampionBull, Red YY Red Knight 640F of which Bar ELpurchased half interest in. It was Red Knight thatthe Chickadee herd became based around. Jim triedto focus on using mainly home raised bulls and hadquite a few outcross pedigrees. Bulls such as NorsemanKing, 5L Explorer and Crowfoot Ole Oscarwere purchased to add to the genetic pool. TheChickadee herd at its peak topped out at 110-120breeding females. Most of the females that weresold were sold privately and through Red RoundUp. The bulls were marketed through the MountainView Select Angus and Simmental Bull Saleheld annually in Innisfail.On October 29, 2010 the Chickadee cowherdwas dispersed and cattle with the infamous YYtattoo were sold into almost all Canadian provincesand 9 U.S. states. Jim stated “you spend a lifetimeof breeding your cattle and you hope that someonenotices what you are doing.” People were obviouslypaying attention to what Jim was doing as their dispersalsale had an impressive average on 140 head.Jim’s 42 year career as a commercial pilotstarted as a bush pilot flying for 8 years in Canada’sArtic and 34 years as a 767 Captain for a commercialairline, giving him the opportunity to fly allover the world while still allowing him to raise hiscattle.What does the future hold for Jim and Laurel......?Well, there are a handful of cows aroundand as Jim confessed, “having cows is like a badhabit, they’re hard to break!” Besides putting up hayon their quarter section, other hayland is also rented.“As long as you have a piece of ground, there’salways work to do!”Although the Chickadee name came from achildren’s magazine when Jim and Laurels’ kids wereyounger and was chosen by them to be their farmname, Chickadee Red Angus and the YY tattoo andprefix will live on in Red Angus herds for years tocome.Congratulations to Chickadee Red Angus,Jim and Laurel King, for being recognized as theCanadian Red Angus Promotion Society’s 2011Purebred Breeder of the year.-Lisa Paget :: September, 201171
