Current students and graduates wore the skull and bones with great pride and represented their alma mater with honour. Athletics • Ailís McSweeney, a UCC graduate, broke the Irish 100m record that had been in place for over 30 years. She went on to represent Ireland at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona. While in Barcelona, she was part of the Irish 4 x 100m relay team who broke the current Irish record. • Brian Murphy, a UCC graduate, was part of the Irish 4 x 400m relay team at the European championships. • David Quilligan came second in the long jump at intervarsities. • Tim Healy came second and Niall Prendiville came third in the 3,000m walk at intervarsities. • UCC Athletics Club was third overall at the Intervarsity Cross Country Championships. Badminton • UCC Badminton Club won several Cork and Munster Club League and Championship titles in 2009/2010. • Liam McNamara and Philip Collins were Munster senior 2 doubles winners. • Clara Pender was the number one female badminton player in Munster. Basketball • The fresher and senior ladies teams were intervarsity winners • Niamh Dwyer was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. • UCC senior ladies and second ladies teams were both colleges league winners. • Students, Niamh Dwyer, Claire Rockall, Áine McKenna, Valerie O’Driscoll, Emily O’Callaghan and graduates Marie Breen and Donna Buckley represented UCC on the Team Montenotte ladies basketball team who won the Super League title for the third year in a row. Boxing • Irish University Championships winners were: Tom McGrath (senior 81kg), Andrew Burns (novice 71kg) and Alan Dowling (junior 51kg). Camogie • Ashbourne Cup finalists • Camogie All-Stars for 2009: • Cork – Cathriona Foley and Rachael Moloney (both graduates) • Kilkenny – Elaine Aylward and Anne Dalton (both graduates) • The freshers’ team were varsity finalists. Chess • Alex Lopez was Irish senior champion. Dance • Siobhan Ryan, a member of the Cork City Ballet Company, performed in The Nutcracker in the Cork Opera House. Equestrian • Brian Morrison was selected to represent Ireland in the Young Rider Three-Day Eventing Competition at the European Championships in Prague (July 2010). Gaelic Football • Michael Shields captained Cork senior Gaelic footballers to division one national league success and led the Cork team out in the All-Ireland senior football final (September 2010). UCC students Eoin Cotter, Ken O’Halloran and Sean Kiely were also part of the winning Cork team • UCC graduates on the Cork squad included Anthony Lynch, Alan Quirke, Fintan Gould, John Hayes, Kevin McMahon, Paddy Kelly and Pearse O’Neill • Michael Shields was awarded an All-Star in 2010
