• A tracking report outlining the access, retention and success<br />

of 438 students with disabilities who entered HE in 2005 was<br />

published in October <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

• Mary O’Grady, Disability Support Officer, presented a paper at<br />

an international conference on Disability and HE at Innsbruck<br />

(July <strong>2010</strong>).<br />

• The DSS compiled a booklet/podcast to enable dyslexic<br />

students to cope with studies and transition to HE.<br />

UCC PLUS +<br />

• The UCC PLUS + Programme relocated to a refurbished space<br />

in Brighton Villas. The new location incorporates a resource<br />

room for students with computing, printing and study facilities.<br />

The resource room also serves as a social space for UCC<br />

PLUS + students to meet with staff, access information and host<br />

tutoring sessions and career/study workshops. In addition,<br />

the resource room acts as a welcoming space to prospective<br />

students when attending school programme activities on<br />

campus, and for their parents when meeting with staff.<br />

• The Homework Club initiative expanded to accommodate 67<br />

UCC student volunteers and over 125 young people from <strong>Cork</strong><br />

City.<br />

• The UCC PLUS + Programme supported 327 students in<br />

<strong>2009</strong>/<strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Student Life<br />

Sporting Success<br />

• UCC U21 Rugby Team were crowned All-Ireland Club<br />

champions.<br />

• UCC Ladies Volleyball Club retained their intervarsity title.<br />

• UCC Ladies Basketball won the senior league and intervarsity<br />

title.<br />

• UCC Ultimate Frisbee Club won ALL intervarsity competitions<br />

and won 6 National Awards at the Irish Flying Discs Association<br />

Annual Awards.<br />

Sports Facilities<br />

• A state-of-the-art water-based synthetic pitch was installed at<br />

the Mardyke Sports Grounds.<br />

• A new portable electronic scoreboard was installed at the<br />

Mardyke.<br />

• Renovation works were completed on the changing rooms at<br />

the Curraheen Road sports complex.<br />

Student Societies<br />

• The efforts of the Environmental Society, along with staff and<br />

fellow students, secured “Green Flag” status for UCC – the first<br />

third-level institution in the world to achieve this accredited.<br />

• UCC’s charitable societies raised over €170k for charities<br />

including: Saint Vincent de Paul, <strong>Cork</strong> Children’s Hospital,<br />

Rose Project-HIV awareness in Africa and Surgeon Noonan<br />

African Project.<br />

• 83 active societies in UCC ran on average 80 events each<br />

• In <strong>2010</strong> UCC societies celebrated a number of anniversaries<br />

– Philosoph celebrated 160 years; Law 80 years and Science<br />

Society 20 years.<br />

• UCC Law and Philosophical Society ranked 30th in the World<br />

<strong>University</strong> Debating Rankings <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

• UCC’s An Chuallacht Society was voted best Irish society in<br />

<strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Granary Theatre<br />

• A Fresher’s week season of events was produced.<br />

• Workshops and master-classes in Theatre Practice, facilitated<br />

by outside practitioners, were hosted.<br />

• One-off productions included; ‘With My Bare Hands’ a new<br />

play from UCD, ‘Language Unbecoming A Lady’ by Bottom<br />

Dog Theatre Company, were hosted.<br />

• The Department of Drama and Theatre Studies staged four<br />

productions.<br />

• Dramat, the student drama society, produced and staged 12<br />

full-length plays in the Granary.<br />

• Over 500 students worked in Granary Theatre in the boxoffice,<br />

stage management, lighting and sound, performance,<br />

set-building, costume, make-up and directing.
