This event marked the end of an innovative three-day business seminar held each year for the final year pharmacy students to provide them with an introduction to the skills they will need in their future careers. Professor Anita Maguire, Head of the School of Pharmacy, highlighted Tom and Marie Cavanagh’s ongoing commitment and support for UCC across many aspects of the university including the development of the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building, and most importantly his active engagement with governance in the institution over many years. Dr Tom Cavanagh and Marie Cavanagh • UCC has signed an IP licensing agreement with Cork biotech firm, Lee Oncology Ltd, that may lead to the commercial development of new cancer drugs following collaboration between the company and UCC’s Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility Agreement on Cancer Drug headed by Professor Anita Maguire. • Professor Caitriona O’Driscoll was an invited speaker at the tenth international symposium on advances in technology and business potential of new drug delivery systems organised by the Controlled Release Society (Indian chapter), in Mumbai (February 2010). • Dr Stephen Byrne, along with colleagues in the School of Medicine and Department of Computer Science, has signed a licence agreement with Clinical Support Information Systems Ltd, for their novel research on e-prescribing systems. The project was also shortlisted for the UCC First Annual Research Commercialisation Awards. • Dr John F. Cryan (Pharmacology) was an invited lecturer at the International Elite Masters programme in Neuroscience, University of Regensburg, Germany. He was also an invited lecturer at the Faculty of Biological Sciences University of Leeds. He gave the plenary CLASS lecture at the Neuroscience Research Day, University College Dublin and was an invited speaker at the Polish Academy of Natural Sciences, Institute of Pharmacology, Krakow, Poland. In the past year Dr Cryan has also taken up the posts of editor for British Journal of Pharmacology, associate editor of Frontiers in Psychopharmacology and associate editor of Frontiers in Gastrointestinal Pharmacology. • Dr Moreen Donahue, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive, and Dr John Murphy, President and Chief Executive Officer, Danbury Health Systems, Connecticut , USA, visited CUH and CUMH to discuss ‘Reconfiguration of the Health System’. Dr Murphy delivered a lecture on ‘Spirituality in Medicine Today’. Dr Donahue addressed the BSc (Nursing Intellectual Disability) students on the subject ‘Downs Syndrome: A mother’s perspective’. • Dr Erja Moore, Principal Lecturer, North Karelia University of Applied Sciences, Finland, presented ‘Studying for a university degree at adult age’ (October 2010). • SFI/PCI held a forum in the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building (May 2010) that provided a networking opportunity for academic researchers conducting research relevant to process analytical technology, chemometrics, process modelling and converging technologies, with industry based in Ireland. The aim of the forum was to connect leading researchers in academia with the pharmaceutical industry to foster links and allow companies to benefit from new and enhanced technologies. The forum was hosted by Professor Anita Maguire, Head of School of Pharmacy and Director of ABCRF. The School of Pharmacy also hosted the second Annual Irish Drug Delivery Network (IDDN) conference with UKICRS ‘ Advancing Drug Delivery’ (June 2010). The IDDN is funded through the SFI. • Dr Ciara O’Toole (Speech and Hearing Sciences) attended a workshop on assessment in bilinguals in Gregynog, Wales, hosted by the Economic Social and Research Council Centre for Research on Bilingualism in Theory and Practice at Bangor

The workshop was part of a visiting researcher grant, awarded to Dr O’Toole earlier in the year • Professor Fiona Gibbon and Dr Alice Lee (Speech and Hearing Sciences) represented Ireland in a short course at the American Speech and Hearing Association annual convention, ‘Leadership into New Frontiers’ in Philadelphia, USA. The course gave an overview of 20 evidence-based intervention approaches for speech disorders in children and was recently published in Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (2010) • The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy hosted an exhibition of first-year creative art work, completed as part of the occupational therapy programme. There is a long history of the use of art, craft and creative activities in occupational therapy, going back to the foundation of the profession in the early 1900s. The theme for this year’s creative activity sessions and this exhibition is the link between ‘occupation and health’. • Dr Kevin Balanda was appointed Adjunct Professor of Public Health, UCC in 2009. Dr Balanda is Associate Director, Institute of Public Health in Ireland and Director of Ireland and Northern Ireland’s Population Health Observatory. Awards • Professor Ivan Perry received the 2009 Award for Best Published Endocrinology Research at the Irish Journal of Medical Science Doctor Awards. The title of the paper was ‘Quality of life and quality of care in patients with diabetes experiencing different models of care’ and was published in US journal Diabetes Care. • Professor Jonathan Hourihane accepted a Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence Award on behalf of the Informing Families of their Child’s Disability Cork pilot implementation project at the awards ceremony in Dublin Castle (July 2010). • Edward Kiely, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, was honoured in November 2009 with an Alumnus Award for exceptional voluntary service to UCC and to the Medical School. Mr Kiely specialises in neonatal surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, paediatric surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery and the separation of conjoined twins. Earlier this year, he led the medical team which successfully separated the Cork conjoined twins, Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf. Edward Kiely’s clinical skills are in much demand internationally. He has trained a generation of Paediatric Surgeons at University College London and has had the distinction of being a Visiting Surgeon worldwide and Visiting Professor in Australia, US and Europe. He has edited or coedited over 160 articles for medical journals and has contributed 21 book chapters. Mr Kiely was also the recipient of the UCC Medical School Medal in June 2010.
