Teaching Highlights
• The Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr Billy Kelleher
TD, announced in February that the Cork Cancer Research
Centre is exploring a collaboration with Weill Cornell Medical
College – one of the United States’ leading medical colleges.
Components of this collaboration will include a medical
research fellowship where Irish students will do part of their
research in Weill Cornell. Physician exchange between the
groups is also anticipated.
• Professor Julia Kennedy (Pharmacy) was awarded €50,000
from the President’s Strategic Fund to develop continuing
professional development (CPD) within the School of
Pharmacy. This grant enabled a number of CPD modules to
be written and recorded and a CPD programme has now been
launched.
• Thirty-three staff of the college qualified for awards in Teaching
and Learning in Higher Education at masters, diploma and
certificate levels: Ann Holohan, Clare Murphy, Siobhan
Murray, Mary Harrington and Anne O’Keeffe (Dental School)
were awarded MA degrees, Dr Mary O’Reilly was awarded
a diploma, Dr Siobhan MacSweeney, Dr Fiona McSweeney,
Dr Gerry McKenna, Dr Chris Stewart, Dr Derek Mulcahy, Dr
Sharon Curtin and Caroline Horgan were awarded a certificate
in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Postgraduate
certificates in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
were awarded to Sean Kelleher, Margaret Murphy and Kay
O’Mahony.
• The School of Nursing and Midwifery continues to develop
certificate programmes and CPD flexi-optional modules.
There are now eight flexi-option modules on offer covering a
wide range of specialist areas. In addition, the taught doctoral
nursing degree (Doctor of Nursing Practice - DNP) commenced
in September 2010 and has a cohort of 16 students.
• The School of Nursing and Midwifery arranged their first
international clinical placement for undergraduates in the USA.
• In line with the Cork University Dental School and Hospital
(CUDSH) Strategic Plan, CUDSH has developed an exit
degree for the third year of the BDS programme. This new
degree, known as the BSc (Oral Health Studies), is awarded
to students who decide to exit the undergraduate dental
degree programme having successfully completed course
requirements of BDS1, 2 and 3. It is envisaged that the degree
will provide a suitable foundation for students to pursue
studies in another programme should they decide that clinical
dentistry is not the career for them.
• The Brookfield Clinic in the School of Clinical Therapies was
established by the HSE and UCC in 2005. In 2009/2010, for the
first time, a speech and language therapist and an occupational
therapist from the HSE worked part time on site. As they both
work with a paediatric client group, they have begun to liaise
and to see clients jointly. During term time students have also
worked in both clinics. They are now getting opportunities to
observe and experience joint working between Occupational
Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy.
