Irish Rural Studies Symposium: the Second Annual Irish
Rural Studies Symposium, hosted by the Department of Food
Business and Development and the Centre for Co-operative
Studies in conjunction with the Rural Economy Research
Centre, Teagasc, took place in UCC in August 2009. The
symposium provided a forum for the exchange of research and
ideas about contemporary rural issues between over 60 Irish
and international academics, policy makers, researchers and
postgraduate students
Dr Mary O’ Shaugnessy at the Irish Rural Studies Symposium
Irish Academy of Management Doctoral Colloquium: Dr
Donncha Kavanagh, Carol Kelleher and Mary Doyle (all M&M)
organised and hosted the Irish Academy of Management Doctoral
Colloquium, in UCC, in September 2009, in partnership with the
Irish Academy of Management. The event marks 10 years since
the department organised the first colloquium in Ireland. The
colloquium is now held in conjunction with the Irish Academy
of Management Annual Conference (which was held this year
in Cork Institute of Technology). The objective of the colloquium
was to provide a collegial and interactive forum for students to
discuss their research and the various issues appropriate to their
particular stage in the PhD process. 12 senior academics from
ESC Lyon, UL, TCD, NUI Maynooth, NUIG, Tallaght Institute
of Technology, Waterford Institute of Technology and UCC
conducted mentoring workshops with PhD students and shared
their experiences of supervising, examining and completing
the PhD process. The colloquium was attended by over 40
PhD students of Management from 10 higher-level institutes,
including students from Iceland, Austria, Germany and Ireland.
In addition to the conferences and seminars summarised in this
report, public and student seminars are offered through many
of the programmes and departments of the College of Business
and Law. The MBS International Public Policy and Diplomacy
2010 Visiting Speaker Series, for example included: Dr David
Bloomfield, Executive Director, The Glencree Centre for Peace
and Reconciliation; Ambassador Brendan Moran, Director of
the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities of
the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and
Clifford Coonan, Irish Times correspondent, China.
