Four students from the BSc Accounting and BSc Finance programmes at UCC won the Irish final of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge, held at the Quinn Business School in Dublin in June. The team subsequently represented Ireland at the global final in Malaysia in August 2010. International teams from Australia, UK, Hong Kong and China also competed in the global final. Winners of the Irish heat of the CIMA Global Business Challenge. BSc International Development and Food Policy: a showcase event for the placement students of BSc International Development and Food Policy (offered jointly with SEFS) was held in November 2009. The event highlighted the work done by third-year students on their six-month placement in developing countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Lesotho, Madagascar, Zambia and India. His final year report, ‘Growing a Family Business’ was commended by the judges. Papers and projects in this competition are selected on the basis of their academic excellence, independent thinking and innovation. Fiona O’Regan and Alan Desmond, PhD students (Law) have been selected to participate in research a fellowship programme at Harvard University, US Anne Neylon (Law) has been awarded a visiting study fellowship to the COMPASS programme in Oxford University, UK BComm students taking the final year Entrepreneurship and Business Start-Up module were set a business venture challenge by their lecturer, Dr Lawrence Dooley (M&M). He invested €5 in each of 19 groups and gave them one week to engage in commercial activity to maximise the return on his investment. The enterprises ranged from guerrilla cake sales to costume jewellery production, from event organising to sale of St Brigid’s crosses at local churches. All groups returned a profit. The top three groups generated €600-€900 each. The initial €95 investment grew to over €3,700. The proceeds of this innovative exercise were donated to Haiti-involved charities Unicef and Haven. Undergraduate students of Faculty of Commerce, under the auspices of the Department of Management and Marketing, won first and second prizes in the MITEL Virtual International Case Competition, a competition hosted by MITEL and the University of Ottawa (Telfer School of Management). Six teams from business schools in Ireland, Singapore, France, India and Canada simulated an international business collaboration between people from around the world using state-of-the-art, online communications technology. UCC students, Margot Jonker and Katherina Kaltenborn, were on the first and second placed teams. Seminars and Conferences Oireachtas Committee Meetings: The Department of Government made history in 2009/2010 when it hosted two Oireachtas Committee meetings. For both committees, it was the first time that they held meetings outside of the precincts of the Dáil or government buildings. The Joint Houses of the Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution held a public meeting, organised by Fiona Buckley and Dr Theresa Reidy, in November 2009 in the Aula Maxima, UCC. Deputies Seán Ardagh, TD and Jim O’Keeffe, TD chaired the proceedings. The meeting was also attended by local TDs and Senators. Fiona Buckley and Dr Liam Weeks both made expert submissions to the Committee at its meetings in the Dáil, earlier that month. Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Constitution Committee, Jim O’Keeffe TD, with Dr Theresa Reidy of the Department of Government The Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government was hosted by the Department of Government in February 2010. The topic under discussion was the local government system. Speakers called for more powers and financial autonomy to be devolved to local authorities. Four formal presentations were made on a range of issues. Submissions were also made by students of the Department of Government.
