Foreword UCC at a Glance Academic Developments Teaching and Learning Research College Reports: Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Business and Law Medicine and Health Science, Engineering and Food Science Events Student Experience Sports and Recreation Buildings and Estates Cork University Press Finance Governing Body IRIS Appendix 32 Honorary Masters of Commerce, Cork businesswomen Claire Nash (Nash 19) and Kay Harte (Farmgate Restaurant) The Honourable Justice Francis Murphy, former Supreme Court Judge, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his contribution to commercial law in Ireland and, in particular, in recognition of his chairing of the Ferns Enquiry Claire Nash (Nash 19) and Kay Harte (Farmgate Restaurant) both received Honorary Degrees of Masters of Commerce for their business achievements in Cork. Professor David Gwynn Morgan (Law) has been confirmed by UCC’s Governing Body as Professor Emeritus Professor Connell Fanning (Economics) was awarded an Honorary Professorship from Guilin University of Electronic Technology in recognition of achievements in MBA teaching Professor Frédéric Adam (AFIS) was awarded the 2010 IFIP Outstanding Service Award by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Technical Committee 8. Professor Adam was also appointed Visiting Research Scholar (2009-2011) at the School of Economics and Management, Lund University, Sweden. He was elected Chair of Working Group 8.3 on Decision Support Systems of the International Federation for IFIP in July 2010. Professor Adam was also appointed Head of Graduate School in the College of Business and Law, commencing in 2011 Dr Joan Buckley, S. Field and M. Murphy (M&M) won a prize for their research paper The effectiveness of a poster campaign promoting a free skin cancer screening clinic and assessment of attitudes and knowledge of Irish males over 50 years on skin cancer, at the Irish Association of Dermatologists Annual Conference (April 2010) Dr Louise Crowley and Dr Aisling Parkes (Law) successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning 2009/2010 Dr John Doran (AFIS) was awarded the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (November 2010) Dr Declan Jordan (Economics) has been elected Secretary of the Regional Science Association International – British and Irish Section in 2010. Ms Carol Kelleher (M&M) received a PhD Scholarship from the organisers of FMM 2010 to present a paper, A phenomenological approach to the study of markets, Helkkula, A. & Kelleher, C. (2010), at the FMM 2010 The Forum on Markets and Marketing: Extending Service-Dominant Logic, University of Cambridge UK, September 2010. Dr Siobhán Mullally (Law) was awarded a Fulbright Scholar award to Columbia Law School, NY, and Temple Law School, Philadelphia, for the academic year 2009/2010. Siobhán was working on an IRCHSS-funded project on gender, multiculturalism and human rights. Dr Brian O’Flaherty (AFIS) was awarded the Academic Award for Outstanding Contribution to Entrepreneurship Education in Irish Third-Level Institutions at the Student Enterprise Awards 2010. Claire O’Sullivan Rochford (AFIS) was awarded a distinction by Chartered Accountants Ireland for the completion of a Diploma in International Financial Reporting Standards (September 2010). Dr Fidelma White and Dr Louise Crowley, (Law) have been awarded the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2009/2010) in their roles as co-Directors and Lecturers on the eLaw Summer Institute. Staff PhDs Awards Bénédicte Sage (Law): Scientific Uncertainty and the Administration of Marine Environmental Law (December 2009). Ciara Heavin (AFIS): An Investigation of Approaches to Knowledge Management in Small to Medium-Sized Software Enterprises – from Knowledge Activities to Knowledge Scenarios (March 2010). Fergal Carton (AFIS): The Impact of ERP Applications on Managerial Decision Making (July 2010). Fidelma White (Law) was awarded an LLD from the National University of Ireland in recognition of published work.
Foreword UCC at a Glance Academic Developments Teaching and Learning Research College Reports: Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Business and Law Medicine and Health Science, Engineering and Food Science Events Student Experience Sports and Recreation Buildings and Estates Cork University Press Finance Governing Body IRIS Appendix 33 Research Highlights UCC Spin-out: One of the most exciting developments to emerge from research within the college this year was Dr Brian O’Flaherty and Dr Simon Woodworth’s (both AFIS) licensed power-saving technology to EnergyWatchIT, a new UCC spin-out company. EnergyWatchIT sells a Green IT policy-management system that dramatically reduces IT electricity costs. The company is based in the UCC Incubation Centre. Two BIS graduates are founding shareholders. The project was funded by Enterprise Ireland. The Global Information Technology Report 2009/2010: The importance of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector and the €75 billion exports generated by this industry, was highlighted in The Global Information Technology Report. The report, launched by the College of Business and Law in March 2010, is an Internationally-recognised collaboration between the World Economic Forum and INSEAD. Following on from the government report, Technology Actions to Support the Smart Economy (2009), Ireland was selected as a country case study. Barry Mc Sweeney, Adjunct Professor at the College of Business and Law, authored a chapter of the report, ‘ICT Supporting the Smart Economy: The Case of Ireland’. Research Rankings: Business Information Systems (AFIS) was ranked 30 of 100 in IS Research Rankings of Schools based on Research Contribution (1990-2009) Research Quality Review: A comprehensive Research Quality Review was undertaken by the departments within the College of Business and Law during 2009/2010 with impressive results. Over half of the departments in the college achieved an overall scoring of four out of five. In published output, over half of the departments also scored more than 60 per cent for publications ranked at three out of five, or above. Arising from the Research Quality Review, the Strategic Plan of the College of Business and Law has been updated and a number of key actions were identified including: • Recruitment of a Head of Graduate School • The establishment of a number of senior academic leadership positions • Improvement of research infrastructure for staff and students • Staff mentoring. Click here for more information on the Research Quality Review Grant Awards Accounting Finance and Information Systems: A number of research awards were received by Business Information Systems, including €25,000 from Merrill Lynch-RDI Centre Dublin regarding Potential of Mobile Technologies and over €167,000 from the Innovation Partnership – Enterprise Ireland to research Optimising Government to Customer Payment Schemes (OGCPS). Management and Marketing: Dr Carol Linehan and Dr Joan Buckley were awarded a seed fund grant by the Institute for Social Sciences in the 21st century (ISS21) to support research into academic career progression (February 2010). Dr Carol Linehan secured €45,000 Pobal funding (with a research team under the auspices of ISS21) to develop gender equality programmes in relation to career progression in academia (September 2010).
