Seminars and Workshops<br />
A range of seminars and workshops, designed to forge links<br />
between industry and the university, were held in <strong>2009</strong>/<strong>2010</strong>:<br />
Lean Leadership in Supply Chain Management Workshop (May<br />
<strong>2010</strong>) in association with S A Partners was led by Professor Peter<br />
Hines, Lean Enterprise Research Centre, Cardiff <strong>University</strong> and<br />
S A Partners. The two-day workshop aimed to help companies<br />
to take a Lean SCM philosophy beyond tools and techniques<br />
helping managers at all levels to take ownership of continuous<br />
improvement activities within their organisations. Participating<br />
companies included: Abbott Ireland Pharmaceuticals; GE<br />
Healthcare; GPSG Ireland (Johnson & Johnson); Kerry Foods;<br />
McKesson; Moog; Pepsi Cola International; RR Donnelley -<br />
Global Turnkey Solutions and Schering Plough.<br />
<strong>Cork</strong> Film Forum (November <strong>2009</strong>) hosted by the Department<br />
of Management and Marketing in partnership with Corona<br />
<strong>Cork</strong> Film Festival and MEDIA Desk Ireland. The forum, which<br />
focused on developing the Irish film and creative industries, was<br />
the first follow-up to the Global Irish Economic Forum held in<br />
Farmleigh in September <strong>2009</strong>. The Minister for Foreign Affairs,<br />
Micheál Martin, TD, delivered the opening address followed<br />
by celebrated Irish filmmaker, George Morrison. Dr Donncha<br />
Kavanagh (M&M) spoke on ‘Imagining Art’. The keynote speech<br />
was delivered by the Maltese Ambassador for the EU Year of<br />
Creativity and Innovation, Dr Edward de Bono.<br />
Faculty of Law – Professional Liaison – an extensive programme<br />
of continuing professional development courses conducted by<br />
the Faculty of Law in conjunction with the practising community.<br />
These events are planned and arranged through the Law Faculty<br />
Professional Liaison Committee. In addition the Environmental<br />
Law Group runs an annual conference and the Centre for Criminal<br />
Justice and Human Rights, operates a number of events on an<br />

Student Recruitment Initiatives<br />
A number of student recruitment initiatives took place during<br />
<strong>2009</strong>/<strong>2010</strong>:<br />
The Law Academy takes place in UCC during the October and<br />
February mid-term breaks. The Academy is available to Leaving<br />
Certificate students and provides them with an opportunity to<br />
experience life as a law student for one day. Students attend<br />
lectures, participate in a Moot Court and have an opportunity to<br />
meet with staff and students on the various law programmes.<br />
The Law Essay Competition is launched in September and<br />
aimed at senior cycle secondary school students to encourage<br />
them to think about careers in law. A number of topics are<br />
provided and prizes are presented to the winning entrants at a<br />
reception hosted by the Law Faculty in January.<br />
The Transition Year Enterprise Awards Ceremony is held<br />
for students who have participated in a school bank or minicompany/enterprise.<br />
This competition is sponsored by <strong>Cork</strong><br />
Chamber and the Faculty of Commerce was launched in January<br />
with a prize-giving ceremony in May.<br />
Junior Certificate Parchment Ceremony – the inaugural Junior<br />
Certificate Business Studies Parchment Ceremony took place<br />
in October. Hosted by Professor Irene Lynch-Fannon, Head of<br />
<strong>College</strong> of Business and Law, the event honoured students from<br />
the top feeder schools to UCC from <strong>Cork</strong> city and county who<br />
achieved an ‘A’ grade in their Junior Certificate Business Studies<br />
examination. Con O’Brien (VP for the Student Experience)<br />
welcomed over 180 students, their parents and teachers to UCC.<br />
Guest speakers included Tanya Murphy (former Lady Mayoress),<br />
Sean O’Driscoll, (CEO, Glen Dimplex) and Mary O’Sullivan,<br />
(President of the Business Studies Teachers Association of<br />
Ireland). The event aims to encourage students to continue their<br />
study of business to third level.<br />
Staff and Honorary Achievement Highlights<br />
The Honourable Justice Patrick J. McCarthy, Judge of the<br />
High Court, received the Alumnus Achievement Award from the<br />
<strong>College</strong> of Business and Law, UCC
