The programme is supported by an advisory board of experienced international policy-makers chaired by the former President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox. The programme was launched by Michéal Martin TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs. LLM Practitioner – provides access to a Masters programme for practising lawyers. MBS Management and Marketing (Pathway 2) – a part-time bridging programme that enables graduates of the Higher Diploma in Management and Marketing to progress to MBS level. MBS Economics of Business Practice – saw the first graduates from this internship-based Masters programme in 2010. MBS Asian Business Studies – the college will be a partner in delivery to the lead college (CACSSS) on the MBS Asian Business Studies starting in 2011. Continuing Professional Development Programmes: Certificate in Leadership and Organisation – in March 2010, UCC’s Dr Michael Murphy presented certificates to a group from Pfizer Ireland who had successfully completed a programme in leadership and organisation. The Department of Management and Marketing developed the programme for high-potential management and future leaders. The success of this programme illustrates the importance of collaboration between the business community and UCC. Two new continuing professional development programmes arising from this programme were developed for the Pfizer Group: Diploma in Production Supervision (Pharma Chem) and Higher Diploma in Leadership Development (Pharma Chem). These qualifications are offered in association with the Centre for Adult Continuing Education. It is hoped to replicate this programme format with other industry partners in 2011. It aims to give an introduction to the Irish legal system and to provide an academic forum for the explanation and discussion of the role of law in Irish society.

The two-day workshop aimed to help companies to take a Lean SCM philosophy beyond tools and techniques helping managers at all levels to take ownership of continuous improvement activities within their organisations. Participating companies included: Abbott Ireland Pharmaceuticals; GE Healthcare; GPSG Ireland (Johnson & Johnson); Kerry Foods; McKesson; Moog; Pepsi Cola International; RR Donnelley - Global Turnkey Solutions and Schering Plough. Cork Film Forum (November 2009) hosted by the Department of Management and Marketing in partnership with Corona Cork Film Festival and MEDIA Desk Ireland. The forum, which focused on developing the Irish film and creative industries, was the first follow-up to the Global Irish Economic Forum held in Farmleigh in September 2009. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, TD, delivered the opening address followed by celebrated Irish filmmaker, George Morrison. Dr Donncha Kavanagh (M&M) spoke on ‘Imagining Art’. The keynote speech was delivered by the Maltese Ambassador for the EU Year of Creativity and Innovation, Dr Edward de Bono. Faculty of Law – Professional Liaison – an extensive programme of continuing professional development courses conducted by the Faculty of Law in conjunction with the practising community. These events are planned and arranged through the Law Faculty Professional Liaison Committee. In addition the Environmental Law Group runs an annual conference and the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, operates a number of events on an annual basis. Click here for more information Student Recruitment Initiatives A number of student recruitment initiatives took place during 2009/2010: The Law Academy takes place in UCC during the October and February mid-term breaks. The Academy is available to Leaving Certificate students and provides them with an opportunity to experience life as a law student for one day. Students attend lectures, participate in a Moot Court and have an opportunity to meet with staff and students on the various law programmes. The Law Essay Competition is launched in September and aimed at senior cycle secondary school students to encourage them to think about careers in law. A number of topics are provided and prizes are presented to the winning entrants at a reception hosted by the Law Faculty in January. The Transition Year Enterprise Awards Ceremony is held for students who have participated in a school bank or minicompany/enterprise. This competition is sponsored by Cork Chamber and the Faculty of Commerce was launched in January with a prize-giving ceremony in May. Junior Certificate Parchment Ceremony – the inaugural Junior Certificate Business Studies Parchment Ceremony took place in October. Hosted by Professor Irene Lynch-Fannon, Head of College of Business and Law, the event honoured students from the top feeder schools to UCC from Cork city and county who achieved an ‘A’ grade in their Junior Certificate Business Studies examination. Con O’Brien (VP for the Student Experience) welcomed over 180 students, their parents and teachers to UCC. Guest speakers included Tanya Murphy (former Lady Mayoress), Sean O’Driscoll, (CEO, Glen Dimplex) and Mary O’Sullivan, (President of the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland). The event aims to encourage students to continue their study of business to third level. Staff and Honorary Achievement Highlights The Honourable Justice Patrick J. McCarthy, Judge of the High Court, received the Alumnus Achievement Award from the College of Business and Law, UCC
