International Graduate Film Studies Conference ‘Transnational, Transcultural, Transmedial: European Cinema Today’ (May 2010). International Conference on the Presentation, Appropriation and Re-contextualisation of the Amateur Moving Image ‘Saving Private Reels’ (September 2010). Scoil Léinn na Gaeilge The De Finibus project of the Department of Early and Medieval Irish, supported by IRCHSS grant for Theology and Religion, held a workshop with international experts (June 2010). School of Music and Theatre Fleischmann Day Seminar (April 2010). The UCC School of Music and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance (UL) - celebrating the life and work of Aloys Fleischmann Bodies/Music Conference (April 2010) organised by Dr Melanie Marshall (Music) and Dr Paul Hegarty (French). School of Sociology and Philosophy Philosophy The second annual Theory and Philosophy Summer School organised by Drs. Julia Jansen (Director), Kieran Keohane, Hans-Georg Moeller, Patrick O’Mahony and Joel Walmsley. Sociology • (in collaboration with the Marsilio Ficino Association) organised the ‘Fourth Socratic Symposium’ on Plato’s dialogue, The Sophist, in Florence. • (in collaboration with Waterford Institute of Technology) organised ‘The Third Workshop of International Political Anthropology’ on ‘Ek-stasis: Ecstasy in Politics’. • (in collaboration with Museo Bellini and International Political Anthropology) organised the international conference ‘Beauty: its Imitation (and its forgery)’ in Florence. • Held the second International Political Anthropology Summer School (June 2010). • Organised the workshop ‘Social, Political and Human Integrity: Revisiting the European Integration Process’. Study of Religions Dr James Kapalo hosted a Study of Religions Department workshop on Pentecostalism in Ireland under the auspices of ISS21 and the Religion and Migration Network. IAHR Congress panel on Islam in Ireland organised by Dr Oliver Scharbrodt with eight presenters in conjunction with IRCHSSproject on the history of Islam in Ireland. IAHR Congress panel ‘Rewriting the History of Western Buddhist Monastics’ organised by Professor Brian Bocking with Alicia Turner and Laurence Cox.

Over 50 conference papers were presented by research postgraduates in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (November 2009). • The Graduate School provides a wide range of research training modules and organises master classes on interdisciplinary topics, along with evening lectures given by guest speakers. The master classes and the associated evening lectures for the period 2009/2010 were: • Master Class on ‘Deconstruction, Ecological Disaster and Economic Crisis’ Evening Lecture: ‘The Meaning of Life: Deconstruction and the Human- Animal’, Speaker: Professor Martin McQuillan, Department of Literary Theory and Cultural Analysis, and Dean of Arts and Social Sciences at Kingston University, London • Master Class on ‘Travel, Migration and Alterity’ Evening Lecture: ‘Place / Trajectory: Cuba / Ireland’, Speaker: Professor Peter Hulme, Dept of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies, University of Essex • Master Class on ‘Romanticism, Medievalism, and the Birth of the Modern World’ Evening Lecture: ‘Romanticism, Medievalism, and the Birth of the Modern World’, Speakers: Professor Graham Allen, Dr Carrie Griffin and Dr Mary O’Connell, School of English, UCC • Master Class on ‘Space/Place/Text’ Evening Lecture: ‘On Turbulence’, Speaker: Professor Tim Cressell, Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London • Master Class on ‘Body, Gender, Sexuality’ Evening Lecture: ‘Orfeo’s Echo’, Speaker: Professor Bonnie Gordon, Department of Music, University of Virginia.
