School of English Professor Pat Coughlan completed a visiting professorship in Irish Studies at Concordia University, US. School of Geography and Archaeology: the human environment Michael Monk represented UCC on the Expert Advisory Group advising the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, on proposed New National Monuments Legislation and associated Work Group meetings on the Review of Archaeological Policy and Practice. Dr Colin Rynne was appointed Council member of the Discovery Programme, Chairman of the Agricultural History Society of Ireland, and President of Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland. School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures Dr Maeve Conrick: • Invited by the NUI to act as member of the interview panel for the National University of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities, 2010 • Acted as judge for the Undergraduate Awards of Ireland and Northern Ireland, 2010 • Invited by the NUI to act as member of the interview panel for Travelling Studentship PhD Scholarship Awards, 2010 • Appointed as specialist advisor to the House of Commons, UK, as an expert on international language policy and language planning, 2009 • Elected as Chair of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) Committee for Modern Language, Literary and Cultural Studies, 2009/2013 • External Reviewer for the MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages programme, University of Chichester, 2010 • NUI Representative to the State Examinations Commission, for Leaving Certificate French, 2009/2010 • Elected President of the Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland for 2010/2012. Dr Gert Hofmann • was an invited visiting scholar to the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Washington, US. • Became a member of the Philosophische Fakultät at the University of Rostock. Dr Daragh O’Connell was a member of Executive Committee, Society for Italian Studies Scoil Léinn na Gaeilge Professor Maire Herbert was re-elected to the Council of the Royal Irish Academy, and appointed a member of the Irish Placenames Commission, and a member of the governing board of the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. School of Music and Theatre The FUAIM series was lauched by the UCC School of Music and Theatre in January 2010. Through the FUAIM season of concerts and events, the UCC School of Music led the university’s celebrations of the Centenary of Aloys Fleischmann and amplified the University’s contribution to the cultural life of Cork City and the region. Launch of the Trasna intercultural music ensemble. After a series of highly successful public concerts in Cork and Dublin, Trasna represented UCC, Cork, and Ireland at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.

Dr Cara Nine was the visiting Scholar at Princeton University’s Center for Human Values. Professor Graham Parkes and Dr Julia Jansen were appointed to the Philosophy and Ethics Committee of the Royal Irish Academy. Study of Religions Professor Brian Bocking was elected treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee of the IAHR for 2010/2015 in Toronto. Conferences, Symposia and Workshops The College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences Inaugural Lecture Series was held from January-March 2010 featuring • Professor Brendan Dooley on ‘Love and War in the Renaissance: Italian Perspective’ • Professor Brian Bocking on ‘The Study of Religions in a Smart Society’ • Professor Kathy Hall on ‘Learning, Living and the Relational Self: rethinking learning in school, college and the workplace’ • Professor Nuala Finnegan on ‘Welcome to Améxica: Playing with Death in US-Mexican Border Narratives’ • Professor John Groeger on ‘Assays in Applied Psychology’ • Professor Graham Parkes on ‘How Philosophy Can Help Save the Planet (with the Aid of a Great Irish Scientist)’ • Professor James Knowles on ‘Towards a Queer History of the Book’. School of Applied Social Studies Meeting Youth Needs in the 21st Century: Youth work, young people and youth policy, an international conference organised by the UCC-based Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (May 2010). School of Asian Studies Third Annual Conference of Asian Studies Ireland Association including the second Roundtable of Asian Ambassadors. School of Education Organisation Mondiale pour l’Éducation Préscolaire (OMEP) (World Organisation for Early Childhood Education) conference (April 2009). School of English The twelfth biennial conference in Medieval Romance: ‘Insular Romance: Contexts & Traditions’ (April 2010).
