Dr Maura Cunneen was elected President of OMEP Ireland<br />

(Worldwide Organisation for Pre-school Education)<br />

The Cohort PhD programme, under leadership of Dr Paul<br />

Conway, had a successful Public Lecture series involving<br />

several international scholars, including Professor Barbara<br />

Comber from Queensland <strong>University</strong> of Technology, Australia.<br />

School of English<br />

Professor Pat Coughlan completed a visiting professorship in<br />

Irish Studies at Concordia <strong>University</strong>, US.<br />

School of Geography and Archaeology:<br />

the human environment<br />

Michael Monk represented UCC on the Expert Advisory Group<br />

advising the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, on<br />

proposed New National Monuments Legislation and associated<br />

Work Group meetings on the Review of Archaeological Policy<br />

and Practice.<br />

Dr Colin Rynne was appointed Council member of the Discovery<br />

Programme, Chairman of the Agricultural History Society of<br />

Ireland, and President of Industrial Heritage Association of<br />

Ireland.<br />

School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures<br />

Dr Maeve Conrick:<br />

• Invited by the NUI to act as member of the interview panel for<br />

the National <strong>University</strong> of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship in<br />

the Humanities, <strong>2010</strong><br />

• Acted as judge for the Undergraduate Awards of Ireland and<br />

Northern Ireland, <strong>2010</strong><br />

• Invited by the NUI to act as member of the interview panel for<br />

Travelling Studentship PhD Scholarship Awards, <strong>2010</strong><br />

• Appointed as specialist advisor to the House of Commons, UK,<br />

as an expert on international language policy and language<br />

planning, <strong>2009</strong><br />

• Elected as Chair of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) Committee<br />

for Modern Language, Literary and Cultural Studies, <strong>2009</strong>/2013<br />

• External Reviewer for the MA in Teaching English to Speakers<br />

of Other Languages programme, <strong>University</strong> of Chichester,<br />

Dr Angela Ryan was invited as visiting lecturer: Editeur George<br />

Sand, 7 juin <strong>2010</strong>. Equipe George Sand, sous la direction du<br />

professeur Béatrice Didier. Ecole Normale Supérieure, rue<br />

d’Ulm, Paris.<br />

Dr Gert Hofmann<br />

• was an invited visiting scholar to the <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania<br />

and the <strong>University</strong> of Washington, US.<br />

• Became a member of the Philosophische Fakultät at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Rostock.<br />

Dr Daragh O’Connell was a member of Executive Committee,<br />

Society for Italian Studies<br />

Scoil Léinn na Gaeilge<br />

Professor Maire Herbert was re-elected to the Council of the<br />

Royal Irish Academy, and appointed a member of the Irish<br />

Placenames Commission, and a member of the governing board<br />

of the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced<br />

Studies.<br />

School of Music and Theatre<br />

The FUAIM series was lauched by the UCC School of Music<br />

and Theatre in January <strong>2010</strong>. Through the FUAIM season<br />

of concerts and events, the UCC School of Music led the<br />

university’s celebrations of the Centenary of Aloys Fleischmann<br />

and amplified the <strong>University</strong>’s contribution to the cultural life of<br />

<strong>Cork</strong> City and the region.<br />

Launch of the Trasna intercultural music ensemble. After a series<br />

of highly successful public concerts in <strong>Cork</strong> and Dublin, Trasna<br />

represented UCC, <strong>Cork</strong>, and Ireland at EXPO <strong>2010</strong> in Shanghai.
