Student Awards:<br />
• Paula Donovan (PhD, supervisor: Dr Maeve Conrick):<br />
won one of seven international scholarships awarded by<br />
International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) Graduate<br />
Student Scholarship for ‘Language Policy and Planning and<br />
Immigration of Allophones to Canada and Québec’.<br />
• Dylan Brennan (PhD) was awarded a Government of Mexico<br />
Postgraduate Student Fellowship.<br />
• Dr Lucy O’Meara (mentor: Professor Patrick O’Donovan) was<br />
awarded a Government of Ireland Post-Doctoral Fellowship.<br />
School of Music and Theatre<br />
Dr Franc Chamberlain was awarded a NAIRTL grant for<br />
development of Undergraduate Research Projects.<br />
Dr Michelle Finnerty<br />
• Secured three-year funding for research on the musical culture<br />
of children in Ireland by the National Children’s Strategy<br />
Doctoral Scholarship from the Office of the Minister for Children<br />
and Youth Affairs. Co-supervised by Dr Mel Mercier (UCC) and<br />
Dr John O Flynn (St Patrick’s <strong>College</strong>, Drumcondra).<br />
• Won an Arts Council of Ireland Bursary Award (<strong>2009</strong>-<strong>2010</strong>)<br />
for research on arts participation in community health care<br />
contexts in Ireland.<br />
Dr Ger Fitzgibbon was awarded the President’s Award for<br />
Academic Leadership.<br />
Dr Melanie Marshall was awarded a Marie Curie International<br />
Outgoing Fellowship (three years), EU of circa €242,000.<br />
Study of Religions<br />
Dr James Kapalo won NAIRTL funding to introduce a fieldwork<br />
research strand into year three of the Religions and Global<br />
Diversity programme.<br />

Six Erasmus Mobility Scholarships were awarded to PhD<br />
students to study in the following foreign universities with which<br />
UCC has partnerships:<br />

Dr Orla O’Donovan was appointed as a member of the Medical<br />

• Member of the board of trustees of the Castlehyde Trust<br />
Foundation supporting people in the community with<br />
intellectual disability<br />
• Board Member of the INPRO, a project for serious and<br />
persistent offenders, under the auspices of the Probation<br />

School of Asian Studies<br />
The UCC Confucius Institute offered non-degree courses in<br />
Chinese for more than 130 adult learners in the <strong>Cork</strong> region,<br />
Chinese culture and language courses within 32 local primary<br />
and secondary schools and established three Confucius<br />
classrooms.
