• UCC/China relations were enhanced through the development
of stronger educational links during a visit in September
2010 to the Shanghai World Expo by Professor Grace Neville,
Director of NAIRTL and Vice President for Teaching and
Learning at UCC and Jennifer Murphy, Project Manager of the
National Academy. The visit raised the international profile of
NAIRTL and of teaching and learning innovations in Ireland.
The Shanghai institutional and national centres for education
research displayed a keen interest in NAIRTL’s and UCC’s
progress on integrating research, teaching and learning and in
UCC and Ireland’s success at implementing the Bologna initiative.
• UCC’s commitment to Adult Continuing Education continued
in 2009/2010 with almost 700 students conferred with
certificates, diplomas and masters. Three programme awards
were in their first cycle: Certificate in Chinese Language; Higher
Diploma in Relationship Studies; MA Learning & Development
(Consultancy). This is the first time that masters degrees have
been awarded to a CACE programme.
• CACE continues its ongoing effort to encourage students to
seek progression routes from various CACE programmes to
full-time UCC programmes. In 2009/2010 students gained entry
to a spread of arts and science undergraduate programmes
at UCC and a smaller number of others progressing from
diploma classes at CACE to UCC postgraduate programmes
at masters and doctoral levels.
• In a new departure, some of CACE’s short course programmes
(non-accredited programmes), traditionally held only in
the evening and on the UCC campus, were also offered, in
parallel, during the day at a variety of city venues such as Cork
City Library and Cork’s Crawford Art Gallery. The programmes
have proved extremely popular and further developments in
this cooperative context are planned for 2010/2011.
• CACE developed eight new programmes approved in
2009/2010. These ranged from NFQ levels 6 to 8 and include
areas from Japanese language to legal studies. A 40-credit
two-year Certificate in Contemporary Living was also approved
in 2009/2010, serving certain specific needs of students with
intellectual disabilities.
• Significant links with local industry and the encouragement
of CPD were facilitated by CACE through the development
of programmes with Pfizers Pharmaceuticals and Enterprise
Ireland. These new programmes include a Diploma in Food
Manufacturing Management (UCC’s Food Business and
Development and Enterprise Ireland); a Diploma in Production
Supervision (UCC’s Department of Management and Marketing
and Pfizers Pharmaceuticals) and a Higher Diploma in
Leadership Development (UCC’s Department of Management
and Marketing and Pfizers Pharmaceuticals).
