In alignment with the <strong>System</strong>’s “Move to Improve … my body, mind and spirit” wellness initiative, Wen Chen, R.N., finds innerharmony and balance by regularly practicing yoga before coming to work.Transformation: Improving the health of the<strong>System</strong>’s employees and familiesFrom smoke-free campuses to healthier food choices incafeterias, and most recently, to the <strong>Health</strong> Engagementbenefits program, <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Ford</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>System</strong> is integratingwellness into the organization.Through Move to Improve…my body, mind, and spiritwellness initiative, the <strong>System</strong> encourages employees andtheir families to take action to maintain and improve theirhealth and wellness.In addition to the documented health benefits of wellness,there also are financial rewards:• When an employee and a spouse/same sex domesticpartner meet the requirements of HAP’s <strong>Health</strong>Engagement (HE) program, the entire family benefitswith lower out-of-pocket costs. This includes waived copaysfor recommended preventive care and screeningsas well as prenatal services, lower co-pays for otherservices, and no annual deductibles. HE focuses onlifestyle behaviors including tobacco use, weightmanagement, and preventive tests. For <strong>2010</strong>, more than18,000 individuals – an 81 percent participation rate –fulfilled the requirements.• A greater focus on prevention and primary caremeans fewer runs to the emergency room and fewerhospitalizations, which improves health and lowerscosts for everyone.• And, as employees improve their own wellness,patients benefit as they receive care from a team ofprofessionals who are healthy in body, mind and spirit.As part of its commitment to supporting healthy choices,the <strong>System</strong>:• Challenges employees to achieve weight managementand exercise goals through the social networking-basedprogram Team Up for Wellness.• Offers more than 100 lunch and learn programs.• Publishes an Employee Wellness Resource Guide, listingmore than 30 wellness resources offered by the <strong>System</strong>.As a result, employees are getting healthier:• Our “lifestyle risk” score, which summarizes the impactof health behaviors on an individual’s risk of death anddisease, has steadily improved over the last six years.• More than 1,800 employees and their spouse/same-sexdomestic partner have agreed to try to quit smoking as aresult of the HE qualification process.• Since July 2007, employees have lost more than11 tons of weight through the Weight Watchers atWork program. ■17HENRY FORD HEALTH SYSTEM• <strong>2009</strong> / <strong>2010</strong> <strong>Report</strong>
