High <strong>School</strong> (HS) Trip Week is an opportunity for students in Grades 9 through12 to travel and participate in a learning and educational experiences outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> classroom walls. There areeleven subject-specific trips, some local, <strong>of</strong>fered in October <strong>2013</strong>. The majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se trips are approximately 5-7days and take place during Week 40 (Sept. 30 – Oct. 6). The “Service Learning and Adventure: Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Thailand”trip is two weeks – during HS Trip Week as well as October break (no school Oct. 7-11). Below are <strong>the</strong> options for<strong>the</strong> <strong>2013</strong>-14 school year. Feel free to contact <strong>the</strong> trip coordinator directly for more details, costs and availability.Nearly all trips have two adult chaperones, ei<strong>the</strong>r ISS teachers or staff.INTERDISCIPLINARY: LONDON, ENGLANDOverview: An interdisciplinary cultural trip focusing on <strong>the</strong> humanities, this trip explores <strong>the</strong>atre, art, history andliterature in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultural capitals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world – London. Activities will include several West End shows,museum and gallery visits and historical and literary walks. The goal is to provide students with a diverse culturalexperience that will be personally enriching as well as academically illuminating.Teacher Lead and E-mail: Sandy Landis – slandis@isstavanger.noHISTORY: BELGIUM (4400-4700)Overview: Led by a Flanders native, this trip focuses on studying <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> World War I with a focus towardWWI in Belgium. Students explore <strong>the</strong> beautiful Flemish city <strong>of</strong> Brugge (Bruges) and spend three days in andaround leper (Ypres), where <strong>the</strong>y explore battlefields and o<strong>the</strong>r historic sites. Students will be walking, biking andbussing to <strong>the</strong> various locations.Teacher Lead and E-mail: Wim Keereman – wkeereman@isstavanger.noGEOGRAPHY: ICELANDOverview: A new trip that explores <strong>the</strong> geologically active island <strong>of</strong> Iceland. This trip, led by <strong>the</strong> high school Geographyteacher, explores various geological sites such as <strong>the</strong> mid-Atlantic ridge and a volcanic crater. The trip will be guided by alocal expert who will allow <strong>the</strong> students to fully appreciate <strong>the</strong> landscapes that we will travel through. We will be based in<strong>the</strong> Icelandic capital <strong>of</strong> Reykjavik.Teacher Lead and E-mail: Thomas Heery - <strong>the</strong>ery@isstavanger.noSERVICE LEARNING AND ADVENTURE: NORTHERN THAILANDOverview: Combining Thai and hill tribe culture, volunteer work, adventure and <strong>the</strong> outdoors, this two-week trip<strong>of</strong>fers 10-12 th grade students an unique school exchange and opportunity to serve o<strong>the</strong>rs in our global community.While in Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Thailand (near Chiang Mai), ISS students share <strong>the</strong>ir talents and spirit <strong>of</strong> service with children atan orphanage/school (<strong>School</strong> for Life) and help with a building project in a hill tribe village. Students will have <strong>the</strong> chance to build <strong>the</strong>ir personal skillswith team building activities, and challenge <strong>the</strong>mselves with a range <strong>of</strong> outdoor activities (wea<strong>the</strong>r permitting) includinghiking, canoeing, kayaking and geocaching. The centre also have a wide range <strong>of</strong> indoor team activities.
