From the Director:Spring is certainly on the way! The increasingamount of daylight both morning and evening areour constant reminder that the seasons are changing. And there are plenty of things blooming here at ISSalong with the seasonal change.Even though our graduation ceremony is still somemonths away, I wanted to share with you informationon this year’s graduation speaker. ISS has a long andproud tradition of inviting some extraordinary peopleto speak to our seniors on their last official event asstudents at the school. This year’s speaker, Dr. KirstyKemp, will undoubtedly be another great inspirationto our students.Water on its way! Before Dr. Kemp was known throughout the world asa scientist and researcher employed by the ZoologicalSociety of London, she was a student who attendedKindergarten through 12th grade here at ISS. Shewas known for her love of science early on and forher sense of service to humanity. She founded the ISSservice club, IFG, which was one of her many goodideas that live on today here at school.According to her CV, her research interest is,“. . . the study of deep ocean ecology with a primaryresearch interest in ecosystem function in the contextof developing realistic and sustainable managementpractices in the marine environment.” In reality, that means that she spends much of the year out onresearch vessels, often deep, deep underwater. Aftercompleting her BSc in 1998 in Animal Biology atthe University of St. Andrews, she then did an MScin Marine and Fisheries Science at the University ofAberdeen before completing her PhD in Zoologyalso at the University of Aberdeen. Whether she isSCUBA diving, spending time in very cold climates,(as in 42 days on an icebreaker in Antarctica), ordiving in a manned submersible off Portugal and lotsof places in-between, she is a perfect example of onewho is following her dream career. To learn moreabout her research interests, go to http://www.zsl.org/science/ioz-staff-students/kemp,1115,AR.htmlAs your spring schedule gets busy, I will mentionin advance that our two final events of the schoolyear, Baccalaureate, (Wednesday, June 5 at 18.00),and Graduation which is where Dr. Kemp will bespeaking, (Thursday, June 6 at 19.30), are both heldhere at school and are available for any member of ourschool community to attend.Does this thing work ..?Congratulations and thanks to all of our studentathletes and coaches who are finishing up thebasketball season. The varsity boys and girls teamstravel down to the NECIS tournament to competeagainst nine other international school teams. Thetournament is hosted by the Antwerp InternationalSchool.2 · The Informer 6 March 2013 www.isstavanger.no

While that tournament is underway, our middleschool students will be bedazzling three full housesin our theatre with “Seussical the Musical.” We areso fortunate to be surrounded by so many talentedprimary, middle and high school students, (and thededicated adults as well), who are willing to sharetheir amazing talents on our stage!Next up is the beginning of the spring sports season, the primary school musical and ISS hosting boththe NECIS swim tournament and the ISTA dramafestival here in Stavanger this spring.Another remarkable example of “Students in Action”has been the high school students and their effortstoward the “Cameroon Service Project.” Two yearsago, ISS 10th grade student, Stephane Ngueguim, passed away very suddenly. It was a tremendouslysad time for all in our school community. But ourhigh school students clearly were not ready to allowtheir friend and classmate to fade from their memory.During both the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 schoolyears, they have worked with Stephane’s familyto research and decide on a logical and realisticlegacy worthy of their friend. In the village whereStephane’s family is from in Cameroon, there hasbeen an ongoing challenge to source and provideclean drinking water. Our students have sponsoredprojects raising to date over NOK 120,000 and theideas keep flowing in, just as the water has recentlystarted flowing in earnest. On March 1, the highschool talent show raised money for the water project,on March 2, the remarkable Candlelight Dinner washeld here at school where the high school studentsprepared and served a first-class meal with the fundsearned going to the same goal.“Stephane’s Trophy,”a wonderful series of athletic events is soon underwaywith the same goal for the funds raised. In the words of an e-mail sent to me by some parentswho were in attendance at the March 2 dinner, “. . . wehave just returned home from another very enjoyableevening at ISS and felt that we had to convey to youwhat a wonderful job all the students did tonight. The food was great, the service first class and theentertainment was, as ever, to a very high standard. On our table we met a lady who did not have a child atISS and had never been to the school before – she hadsimply come along to the dinner with another friendof ours as company. She was absolutely astounded atthe level of professionalism and maturity displayed byall of the students, even more so when she discoveredthe reason behind the event tonight. We would begrateful if you could please convey our appreciationand congratulations to everyone involved in tonight’sevent, for a job very well done! They can all be veryproud of themselves and it must be a huge comfortto Stephane’s family to see that their son has becomesuch an inspiration.”www.isstavanger.noHard work in the heat of AfricaAlways in our hearts..The Informer 6 March 2013 · 3

At the dinner, Marcel Ngueguim, (Stephane’s father),made a presentation on the progress made andpotential projects that could be considered in thefuture. One that he mentioned was stocking a libraryfor the local school. This was an idea that resonatedwith me. Here at ISS we always have books to donateas we are on a regular textbook rotation schedule. Sofinding the books is not a problem. SHIPPING THEBOOKS to a location is, however, always a problem. The weight and cost are just not logical for the schoolto take on as the normal shipping costs would befar higher than the value. By writing about this, Iam hoping that someone in our school communitywho has contacts in—for example—one of the oilcompanies that have offices in Cameroon and areregularly sending shipments down there, wouldlike to offer a wonderful humanitarian gesture ofbeing willing to ship our used books down to a verywelcoming library. Our Board of Trustees has recently approved theschool’s updated Guiding Statements, and the school’snew Vision Statement is “Inspire a community ofresponsible, globally-engaged empowered learners.”Anyone who has watched our Cameroon ServiceProject participants in action would recognize thatour students are living examples of those powerfulwords. To read the complete new Guiding Statements, pleasesee them on the next page. They have been developedthrough broad stakeholder contribution and will leadthe school into the next phase of the future.Thank you.My e-mail is at the bottom of this message—pleasedo not hesitate to contact me.Our students have taught us some wonderful lessonson how to honor the memory of their friend and theyinspire we adults to think about our role as well.Dr. Linda DuevelDirectorLDuevel@isstavanger.no4 · The Informer 6 March 2013 www.isstavanger.no

From the Deputy DirectorDear families,As outlined in my last Informer article and as describedby Dr. Duevel, the updated Guiding Statementswere approved at the Board Meeting on Monday 4thFebruary. Dr. Duevel has outlined the full GuidingStatements in her article, but I will highlight a fewpieces here:Our Vision: Inspire a community of responsible,globally-engaged empowered learners. Our Values: Learning, Well-being & CommunityAs the updated statements were being shaped theschool administration and the Strategic PlanningCommittee of the Board of Trustees have beenworking together to ensure that our GuidingStatements will be intrinsically linked to our schoolstrategic and operational planning process in orderthat we ensure our Vision, Mission, Aims and Valuesare put into practice. The process does not stop there, however. Ourchallenge now is to ensure that our GuidingStatements are widely known, understood, acceptedand used as a touchstone by all constituents of ourcommunity. To that end there are further areas to work on andthese are outlined as follows:Visual Representation - In order to have the GuidingStatements more widely known and understoodour challenge is to work towards finding a way ofencapsulating the essence of the updated statementsin some form of a visual. Some suggestions on howwe could make a more visual representation havealready come out during the many review meetings. This has included someway linking the terms in thestatement to ´The Three Swords` or our logo of the´Viking Ship´. Interesting ideas, don´t you think?Core Values – As part of our school re-accreditationprocess we will seek to explain what we do, what weare committed to and generate evidence in relationto our ´Core Values` of Learning, Well-being andCommunity. By doing this we are overtly pinningour sails to the mast, so to speak.Internationalism / Interculturalism – Also as partof the work done by the Section A re-accreditationcommittee on Guiding Statements we are required todevelop a ´school-based´ definition of Internationalism/Interculturalism.This is very much linked to our value of communitywhich states: At ISS, we celebrate the spirit of belongingand a sense of community at the school, local and globallevels. Respecting diversity and valuing internationaland intercultural understanding, the school fostersactions intended to make positive contributions to amore equitable and sustainable world. As I said earlier, I will shortly put out some furtherinformation relating to creating a visual representationof our Guiding Statements so watch this space.Regards,With kind regards,Gareth JonesDeputy DirectorGJones@isstavanger.noI will shortly put out a challenge to the broadercommunity to solicit their ideas on how this can bebest represented so we can generate a range of optionsand a good deal of community involvement.6 · The Informer 6 March 2013 www.isstavanger.no

Hope to see you there!Kindly,Katharine MudraAdmissions & Communications Officeradmissions@isstavanger.noMORNING CONNECTIONS:Thursdays, March 21 & April 25 -- 8:45-10:30 -- ISSTwo upcoming “Morning Connections” topics are:March 21: Culture Shock and Creating ConnectionsMany of ISS’ globetrotting families have lived in numerous corners around the world, sometimes quickly saying goodbye to onehome and culture and onto the next within months. The international way of living brings many benefits, but there are certainlychallenges too. It’s been said that “a successful moveable family is one in which each family member feels welcome, safe andvalued not only as a member of his/her family but also in the new community in which they live.” This session looks at cultureshock for parents and managing change as adults. It will also overview strategies for dealing with culture shock, such ascreating new support networks and meaningful connections during time of change. We’re fortunate to have the talents and expertise of an ISS parent, Dr. Vlatka Duric, to lead the session. Dr. Duric is apsychologist from Australia with extensive clinical and research experience with individuals and groups addressing change;adjustment to change and loss; and, how to create safety and stability during and after change. She has developed and ledmany workshops and seminars in a variety of settings such as communication skills training for medical students as well asexperienced doctors and nurses. She is a mother of two ISS students, an expatriate, a trailing spouse and once a selfproclaimedTCK (‘third culture kid’) herself.RSVP via http://isstavanger.wufoo.com/forms/x7x0r3/.April 25: Brain Research and Learning“The brain is the last and grandest biological frontier, the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe. Itcontains hundreds of billions of cells interlinked through trillions of connections. The brain boggles the mind.” – James Watson, winner of the 1962 Nobel prize in Physiology/Medicine.Parents, teachers, school administrators, psychologists and neuroscientists from around the world have been studying the fieldof neuroeducation for decades. And the latest research about the adolescent brain, character development and intellectualdevelopment is proving quite intriguing. How do our perceptions of brain development and age differ from what the research is telling us? What are the environmental, home and school patterns that lead to healthy – or unhealthy – development of children? How do we adjust to the complexbrain and motivational patterns represented by the diverse students in today’s classroom? After introducing the brain and its inner workings, Ms. Carol Wallace, middle school principal, will discuss: the differencebetween the young adolescent and adolescent brain (when is a brain fully developed?), the difference between the boy and girlbrain (what mindsets and motivation strategies work well for each gender?), and the effect of sleep, nutrition and technologyon brain development and a child’s attitude and ability to learn.
