Talking it UpNewsletter for Jean Weingarten Peninsula Oral SchoolSummer 2010Open House...April 2010What a wonderful time families and staff had seeing various classrooms, the children’swork and chatting together! Our older students (ages 3-5 years) drew self portraitswhich graced the halls of the school. Our younger children displayed their art in theirclassrooms. Everyone was very proud to show their work to their families. The entertainment for the evening began with our Master of Ceremonies, KarenErickson in her tiger print shirt introducing videos taken by the Family Center teachers,Janet Weil and Sally Grenfell. What a terrific way to show the little ones in action singingand dancing and talking up a storm! True to our theme of the month: Zoo and FarmKaren’s class produced a video of her boys portraying animals singing Old McDonald Had aZoo. They did a marvelous job of sounding very true to life.Next came the live performances! Joanie Awender and Julia Golomb had their large groupsplit into small groups to perform as wild creatures and sing “We Are Going to the PettingZoo” written by Joanie Awender. In addition, there was a performance of “We’re Going OnA Safari” and “Oh What Am I?”Jenny Ignacio’s children recited the story, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? Theyenjoyed performing and helping one another remember their lines.www.deafkidstalk.orgThey handed off to one anotherbeautifully! The finale was a paradeled by Karen to music bySergio Mendes called Magalenhaand the children showing off theiranimal masks! Thank you all forcoming and supporting the childrenand teachers for all the hard workthey do all year!

Students & StaffSTUDENTS SPEAK…Matt Nutini...JWPOSD student1991-1993; Teacher assistant 2009-2010“My earliest memory of JWPOSD isSummer Sea Camp when I was 6 or7 years old. The teachers and administratorsturned the multipurposeroom into a big bubblebeach! My teachers brought lots ofenergy and enjoyment to the classroom.Even though I was not hearingimpaired, I always felt like I wasequal with the other students and Ireceived just as much attention asthey did.I enjoy working at JW now, becauseI love watching children interactwith each other. It is great to seethe 1 and 2 year olds grow and developover the year. Young studentsoften come into the schoolwith little or no language skills andwithin a year they have a vast vocabulary. When I am not at JW, I enjoy playingbasketball and tennis with myfriends and my brother when he ison leave from the Navy. I also enjoygoing to sporting events such asthe SF Giants. It is my hope to get adegree in early childhood educationand continue working with childrenin the future. “INTRODUCING…Tracy Scandlyn joined JWPOSD thismonth as our Development Director.Beyond her professional skillsand experience, growing up withmany hearing impaired familymembers and being previously acquaintedwith some of our students, sponsors, and donors makesher uniquely qualified for this position. When she’s not working at JW,Tracy fills her time with her foursons’ sporting events and activities. She loves to read, enjoys photography,is a certified massage therapistand soul collage facilitator, and isalso an interior designer.Don’t be surprised if Tracy calls youto meet for coffee or a walk aroundthe neighborhood. Her philosophyis that all good development andfundraising depends on relationshipsand that it takes the effort ofEVERYONE to succeed!

THANK YOU...for investing in the livesand future of ourchildren!Special thanks...The JWPOSD community is a special one where families come together and make adifference each day at our school. Parents in Touch (PIT), our parent organization, supports our school in a multitude of ways throughout the year. Our parentsjump in for recess and bathroom duty, provided a gourmet Indian buffet to ourstaff for Teacher appreciation Day and worked for months planning and preparingour Annual Gala fundraiser. This is just a sample of the ways our parents supportour school. Many thanks to Alex Kwong for helping our walls stay strong. Alexspent each Friday during lunch completing a list of maintenance tasks, and hetackled them with a smile. THANK YOU Alex!A special thanks also goes to four very special individuals for their endless workand dedication to the school. Huge thanks to each and every one of you! You are deeplyappreciated!Alumni…Our Annual Alumni Gathering took place recently and over 150 alumni families, friends and staff met on the JWPOSD campus. It was a time to reconnect, catch upand reminisce. It was also time to say bon voyage to Janet Weil and Liz Thomsenwho are starting new chapters in their lives after decades at JWPOSD. A highlightfor the children was the piñata that swung from the monkey bars. The timepassed much too quickly, but how wonderful it was to be together.
