DiversityWomen whoare newsMass media can cooperate in cutting down thegeographical distances and connecting us withevents that happen everywhere. For example, through television we learnt that, for the first time, an argentine woman climbedthe Mount Everest (8.844 meters high). And alsothrough television, in this case in Brazil, we enjoyedan interesting interview with women whomade of their job a local news.Text Skanska LAPhoto Ricardo StuckertIn a service that not a delicate at all, with most men, at Power Station PresidenteBernardes in Cubatao Brasil, whereSkanska is carrying out a ThermoelectricUnit work, we come across with the addedvalue of the feminine dedication.Eleven women make the welding job.Through the Skanska culture, which seeksto prioritize diversity among its collaborators, women conquered the space ina market that, till a short time ago, wasexclusively masculine. “To enter into theconstruction business, women need onlyone opportunity, because we have alreadycourage, we are naturally multi-purpose:we take care of thehouse, husband andchildren”, says thewelder María SacramentoSimonic.María Sacramentoand her colleagueshave much incommon, especiallytheir dedication andsensitivity. They areversatile, energeticand professionals. All of them arepassionate abouttheir job and aspireto develop themselvesprofessionally inthe company. “Thisis a personal victoryto have reached to the refinery area, whichis managed by many men. I aspire to continueand to become an inspector”, confessesElissandra Souza Nascimento. In addition to the challenge to useboots, uniform, helmet, glasses andhearing protectors to work in the weld, they spend the day on high, proving that, besides dedicated, they are brave. “Inthis work I have climbed to 48 meters”,proudly assure Sandra. It is clear that theyalways added a feminine touch. DeuzaniNogueira Bessa, for example, faces theprofession as an art in her daily life: “I’vemade wedding rings, rings… And steakplates using welding!”.For the project‘s Human Resourcescoordinator, Geraldo Bueno, to count onteams integrated by men and women isvery positive and allows completing thevisions and conducts. “Women always dothe difference. In the case of our welders, they have an excellent level of work, andI can assure that there is no difference atall as regards the quality of a job made bya man or a woman”, explains Geraldo. InMay, the Skanska welders’ job had a morethan special acknowledgment, with thevisit of the President of the Republic, LuisInácio Lula da Silva, who took pictureswith all of them, besides recording aninterview for the television about thewelders’ occupation.Diversity in Skanska team is an outstandingpiece of news also on the Brazilian television!Construyendo Latinoamérica # 53 2009 9

SafetyPrevention isoutperformingIn the world, construction is a highrisk activity. And itis precisely for thisreason that Skanskahas taken the challengeto conduct only safeoperations. Each ofour collaborators mustcome back home in thesame conditions theyleft home each morning. This commitment, whichis daily and is renewedeach morning beforestarting our workingday, seeks to achieve asole purpose:Zero AccidentsPhoto Skanska LAVisible leadershipIt is each Business Units’ responsibilityto develop and implement policies andpractices to have safe places to work fortheir collaborators, subcontractors andsuppliers. In Skanska LA, we operatein each of our countries and regions, through the Integrated ManagementSystem which include policies, commitments, participation and leadership.Alfredo Andrade, QHSE Manager for“All of us must beresponsible of our safetyon jobsite…”Latin America, says: “To align ourselveswith the Zero Accidents goal means tounify efforts and to share commitments. For this reason, each leader’s role is criticalin our region, because, through personalexample, the objective is communicatedand it is put into practice by theother members of the team. Specifically,it is about convincing ourselves that wecan achieve it and act accordingly. And,which is the way to act? Each of us mustbe responsible of our own safety in ourjobsites. As leaders, we must encourageour collaborators’ proactivityupon the use of risks preventiontools, educating and communicating. We are convincedthat this is the most importantvalue for us, for the companyand for our clients. SafetyPrevention, that’s thequestionPrevention in allSkanska‘s jobsites impliesto identify, evaluate andcontrol labor risks. Weshould not only focus onour efforts to develop andimplement the necessaryprevention measures, but also in keeping themeffective through time. Anexample of this kind of toolis the Safe Assignment of Job (SAJ), atechnique to identify, evaluate and settlerisks control associated to each step of ajob. Its practice consists of holding a dailymeeting before starting the working dayin a project or service, where all the teamparticipates and it is leaded by the supervisor.“Each morning, supervisor gathersthe team and, using a predetermined list, checks the risks and control measuresto be taken to eliminate or neutralizerisks. This practice is key and I assureyou that promoting the participationof all the team, a real and effective riskcontrol is achieved in each work”, saysManuel Cueto, QHSE manager of AndeanRegion. “To emphasize better practices isan excellent opportunity to transmit theimportance that Safety management hasin our company. Each of us, indistinctivelyof the role we play, has the obligationto get involved in this value and also hasthe incomparable opportunity, specificand tangible, to be used each time we visita project or service”Edgar Monsalve, QHSE VenezuelaManager, assures that team commitmentand integration can achieve the Zero Accidentsobjective. Better improvements asregard safety have already been achieved.“Prevention tools are key; they promoteparticipation from leadership, who cooperatein the identification and preventivecorrection of behaviors, practices, and unsafeconditions. This allows us to keep andsurpass our high safety standards, alignedto the necessity of our clients”.Another example of preventive tool thatis used in our region is described by Edgar:“Safety Observation Operative Card(TODOS) can be freely filled by any personthat works for a project or service. It seeksto identify dangerous situations that mainlyarise from the team behavior, in additionto stimulate the safety auto behavior. Thistool also gives significant benefits, such ascorrect and mitigate dangerous conditionsimmediately and integrates the leaders inthe team’s daily activities”.A third proactive tool that has beensuccessfully implemented in our regionis the one called Safety Planned Observation(SPO), which promotes leadersparticipation as regards the identificationof deviation, by meansof observation of behaviors, practices, andsafety conditions. Thisefficient tool has beenstressed by SkanskaAB and is imitated bythe rest of the BusinessUnits, with variants. The responsibleuse of this tool addsvalue to the safetymanagement and for this reason Edgarshares some of the specific measures thatthey implemented in his country as aconsequence of the use of these preventiontools: “From the abovementionedsuggestions and observations, we analyzeand plan actions focused in eliminatingany kind of deviations. We re-enforce theuse of personal protection equipments, weimprove the signs of risky areas and wemodified job unsafe practices. These areonly some examples that have added valueto our jobsite, to health and to our safety”.Skanska world alignedto a sole goalNowadays, we are more than 60,000collaborators who must renew daily ourcommitment to the safety managementin the company. Our participation indifferent editions of corporate processnamed “Global Safety Stand Down”, forexample, has been crucial for this. Thisprocess has been launched by SkankaAB to be implemented in all BusinessUnits. It seeks to deepen in each of us,collaborators and subcontractors, theimportance of working in a safe place:project, service and office. It pursuesthe premise that any accident may beprevented. Due to a pitiful and sadfatality, to make it known and analyze itscauses through lessons learnt, aligned usto work together to avoid a new terriblefact like this. Safety week event is a sharedpractice: “During September, a newSafety Week shalltake place. It is aThere exists a goal and there existpolicies, proceedings and tools toreach it. Only through commitmentand daily action we can achieve it.It depends on each of us.It depends on youglobal activity thathelps us to renewour commitmentto safety and that, through trainingand coaching,it re-enforcesthe importanceof accidentsprevention. Totoral Wind Farm Project shall reduce the emissions of CO 2in 65,000 tons/year;this is the equivalent to the annual withdrawal of 15,000 cars from the streets.Be proactive, care environment. To start the development of projects withcompanies engaged with the environmentalcare, approach us to our corporatestrategy as regards the developmentof green solutions, which are economicallyattractive for our clients. In theTotoral Wind Farm, our commitmentin developing a project that respects theprotection of the flora and fauna of theplace, moved to concrete actions. Beforethe beginning of the civil construction,it has been made an exhaustive informationgathering of the main species in thezone, to apply a conservation plan.In relation to the flora, for example, cactus species were preserved protectingtheir genetic material from the wind.As regards to the fauna, the protectedspecies have been partridges, thrushes, chirigües (type of olive-green color bird),mouse of long tail, olive-green mousses. Each day, commitment is renewedand moves to new actions: the windfarm’s cleanliness and organization areadmirable. Th is is achieved by the sum ofindividual conducts. For example, afterlunch residue is classified. Th ere alsoexist a common space for battery andother waste recycling.16Construyendo Latinoamérica # 53 2009

ProjectMarcia Vidaurre, Quality Leader and Valentina Rojas, Building Work LeaderWomen in dirty bootsDiversity in professional profiles, genresand ages, cooperates with a more productiveenvironmental work; differentpoints of view and characters convergeand add value to the development ofthe project. In relation to women’s presence, team becomes richer as regardsorder, discipline and job planning, and in this way Julio says: “I know itunusual to find many women in thisbusiness, that’s why I want to emphasizetheir performance here. The feminineinfluence in the team affects the discipline, vocabulary and respect. It is veryinteresting to see how they influencedthe work environment that historicallyhas been invaded by men.”Julio’s enthusiasm arouses intriguesand we decided to meet these womento know through their story what’sabout working in a Skanska Project. Wewent to the building work. We met twowomen. They talked, discussed and tookdecisions. They were Marcia Vidaurre,Quality Leader and Valentina Rojas,Building Work Leader.“I seek that each member of my teamassumes his role with responsibility, complying with it by understandingits consequence and its importancefor the team. I consider that this isthe best way of developing a task, andnot simply to obey orders. I look afterexplaining why I ask for something, talking with my teamand, above all, coordinatingworks andnecessary resources tofulfill with the terms ofour client. Ourquality must be of excellence, and thatis our horizon. Zero Defects means thatwe don’t allow ourselves any mistakein the final product, and we work on itdaily”. To illustrate the way this valueis shared and turned into action by theworking team, she tells us: “Trainingand coaching the team is the way weprofessionalize our job. We insist onthe final understanding of each stage ofthe process we develop. This means tounderstand each step we take and howit influences in the team work, in thefinal product. Due to this, we carry outperiodic coaching in the field, presentationsand workshops. We insist a lot incoaching, it is a specific way to understandour role in the team”. Valentinajoins Marcia and adds: “We have all thepossibilities to do things right. IntegratedManagement System is our guide, and it assures us to develop a product ofexcellent quality”.Safety, key for asuccessful project“Security Management is critical. To havea working place that records Zero Accidentsis our goal and nowadays we fulfillit. For this reason, the tool’s implementationof prevention card TODOS (All)has been very important. It stimulatedthe active participation of the team andthe awareness of this value. Suggestionsare directed to corrective actions. Otherexample is the activity of Safety Work Assignmentthat is obligatory before startinga working day. Training workshops arealso critical. The effort is huge, but this isthe only way to work in a safe place for allof us”, culminates Julio.Sunset let us know that working daywas ending. New gamma of orangecolor started to be seen in the sky, asnatural scenery that accompanies themovement of the first wind turbinegenerators of the farm. Itwas an excellent opportunity to spreadour capacities with present and potentialclients and suppliers. If you are interested on more information about the meeting, you can visit:http://www.iresummit.cl/What are we talkingabout when we talkof eolic energy?Eolic energy is the non conventionalenergy that had had an importantdevelopment in the last years. Eventhough nowadays it represents a lowpercentage of electricity generationin the world, its use grows quickly.Between 2000 and 2008, the installedcapacity has increased considerablyand it is estimated that for 2010,eolic energy will double the currentfigures. Available energy in the windis several times larger than the currentenergy consumption. In this way inthe planet there is 50 times moreeolic energy available than the biomass.Nevertheless, it is not possibleto use it neither in any momentnor in any place. To work correctly, wind turbine generators need to beinstalled in places with minimumdetermined eolic conditions and withan average wind rate of at least 30km/h. Generally, these conditionscan be found up in the hills or in highplaces of the coast, in the land and inthe sea. The main advantage of eolicenergy is that it is a clean, renewableand an absolutely friendly source withthe environment.Carbon PointsSN Power has added itself to thedeveloped countries’ commitment, members of the United Nations, toreduce global warming gas emissionof at least 5% as regards 1990,before year 2012. SAPStarting to operate projects in SAPMeeting SAP –Project System (PS)SAP is a project management tool thatwill allow us to estimate costs, administerbudgets, sales, resources, plan, programand monitor projects’ dates. In this way,we shall cover through SAP the entireproject’s life, from its beginning in the offerstage, till the definite acceptance.SAP – Project System (PS) has a highlevel of integration with all the areas of thecompany. This will make possible to dispose,in real time, of all the supply, maintenanceand record of costs management. Our stepsProject System module is operative fromthe beginning of May. Unlike other modulesin SAP, its implementation will begradual and project will be incorporatedsequentially. This module will be used by the estimationand project management control. That’s why the job performed for itsimplementation was based upon jointdefinitions, seeking a larger synergybetween both areas.PS implementation in Skanska needed adeep investigation of the performancesthat SAP offers in its standard version. This led us to interact directly with thepeople that developed the system andto implement other new improvementmodule, available by SAP recently. In addition, important, own developments weremade to foster the scope ofthis tool without alter theoriginal system base. In thisway, future updates will bemade with no problems.Path ahead...In the beginning, estimationsin SAP were made inparallel with the currentmethodology. In thisway, we contacted SAPtool with our operativegroup of estimations, whocompleted their trainingin the use of the modelapplied in Skanska. MakeSafety Weekaccident-freeDear Colleagues,Last year all of you contributed to making SafetyWeek a great success with the quality, number andextent of activities that took place around the world.Safety Week, September 14—20, is an importanthighlight of the Skanska calendar, and serves as areminder of our shared goal of Zero Accidents. This year, Safety Week will specifically focus on taskplanning, since it is evident that lack of planningis the root cause of many of our accidents. Goodplanning prevents accidents.Good planning means knowing how the work willbe performed, which risks require to be managedand how they are controlled. When we look at our most serious accidents overthe last two years we find that three quarters of thoseinjured did not receive a pre-task safety briefing. Therefore, during Safety Week 09 I want everyoneon our worksites, subcontractors included, to takepart in a pre-task safety briefing before startingwork. This is specifically important for high-riskactivities such as working at heights, lifting, blastingand working near machines or vehicles.I am also asking all managers to investigate the causesof any unsafe behavior you might come acrosswhile on safety site visits. By repeatedly asking thequestion “why?” you can get to the root cause of thebehavior and this will help us prevent accidents infuture.Let us make Safety Week 09 accident-free.Best regards,Johan KarlströmPresident and CEO, Skanska AB
