Taking in some of south Wales’most varied and beautiful landscapes, theroute follows rivers and railways and runsthrough forests. It also links up with<strong>Rhondda</strong> Cynon Taf’s network of trails,including the Cynon and <strong>Rhondda</strong> Fachroutes, as well as the spectacular TrevithickTrail in neighbouring Merthyr Tydfil.Several train stations along the Taff Trailmake it very easy to access. From Merthyr,the route takes walkers high above thevalley, offering sweeping views and passingthrough former mining communities. Thetrail runs through pretty woodland as itpasses Abercynon, then joins a new sectionof path alongside the river Taff. Traces ofthe old Glamorgan canal are hidden in thewoodlands along the route.In the market town of Pontypridd, the TaffTrail passes Ynysangharad Park, which hasa popular outdoor pool (seasonal openingonly) and hosts a range of summer festivalsand shows. This will take you into Barry Sidings,which has two small fishing lakes and plentyof picnic and barbecue spots. There is alsoa cafe (seasonal opening and weatherdependent) in the visitor centre and achildren’s play area.Surface: TarmacNearest railway stations:Pontypridd, Trehafod, PorthTourist Information: PontypriddThe route continues to the old pit works at<strong>Rhondda</strong> Heritage Park in Trehafod, whichis among <strong>Rhondda</strong> Cynon Taf’s most visitedattractions. The centre has an art galleryfeaturing works by local and national artistsand a cafe, as well as Black Gold Tours ledby bona fide ex-miners.The last stage of the trail takes you to theValleys town of Porth, where you can jumpon a train back to Pontypridd. Alternatively,experienced cyclists can carry on towardsMaerdy, where the trail meets Route 47 anddrops onto the Ynysybwl and Pontypriddforestry tracks. It runs alongside theChurch Village bypass but its clever designmeans the path is surprisingly peaceful andscenic. It is the first traffic-free trail to becompleted under the Valleys Cycle Network,an exciting project by cycle charity Sustransand local authorities to extend the NationalCycle Network in the Valleys by 100 milesover the next two years.The route can be picked up at variouspoints or to travel the whole route can beaccessed at Cross Inn near Llantrisant ornear Cheriton Grove (Powerstation Hill) inTonteg. The trails at Dare Valley Country Park offer a realchance to get away from the hustle and bustle and get back to nature.The walks range from family-friendly to strenuous and all start from the visitor centre.Way-marked RoutesBwllfa Trail:This is a short, circular walk around thevalley floor, passing the Cascade waterfalland following sections of the River Dare.Cae Mawr Trail:This pleasant criss-cross circular route dipsin and out of wooded areas and travelsalong the side of the valley. Walkers feelingespecially fit might want to stop at the TrimTrail along the way for an extra workout.Penrhiwllech Trail:This is a strenuous route taking walkers overrough terrain onto an upland plateau, theTarren y Bwllfa. The Dare Valley is a classicexample of a glaciated U-shaped valleyand Tarren y Bwllfa is the glacial “cwm” atits head. This uphill walk is well worth theeffort due to its majestic views and birdlife.Dare Valley Country Park also has aheritage trail for visitors who want to learnmore about the geography and richindustrial history of the valley, and the DareValley Quest, an interactive walk forfamilies.Leaflets for all these trails are availablefrom reception or can be downloaded at:www.darevalleycountrypark.co.uk10

WWW.DESTINATION<strong>RCT</strong>.CO.UKPen Pych, BlaencwmDistance 10kmSurface – variableNearest Train Station – TreherbertTourist Information - PontypriddThis walk is set in the stunning landscape ofthe Upper <strong>Rhondda</strong> Valley, and takes youhigh above the villages to the view point ofPenpych above Blaenrhondda.If Wales is said to be a land of mountainsand waterfalls then this walk providesirrefutable proof.Using the Forestry Commission car parkin Blaencwm is an ideal starting point tothis walk.Among the highlights of the area is LlynFawr. The lake was drained in the early20th century and revealed a large hoardof Bronze Age artefacts, which are noon display at the National Museum ofWales, Cardiff.Attractions along the route include thevisible remains of the Iron Age Village atHendre Mynydd.From the Rhigos viewpoint, walkers cantake in fantastic views across the BreconBeacons to the north and down <strong>Rhondda</strong>Fawr to the south.Pen Pych is one of the few flat toppedmountains in Europe and overlooks thevillage of Blaenrhondda, which ishistorically important as the largestundefended Iron Age settlement in southeast Wales.There a number of waterfalls cascadingdown the valley sides, and stunning views.Please be aware this strenuous routefootpaths are of varied surfaces and thereare a number of steep ascents. Weathercan be very changeable ,especially onhigher routes. Suitable clothing andfootwear is highly recommended, and acopy of the relevant OS 1:25,000 map (OSExplorer No. 166 Merthyr & <strong>Rhondda</strong>).12

WWW.DESTINATION<strong>RCT</strong>.CO.UKCwm Hafod TrailCategory: Traffic freeRoute: A short, circular walk from<strong>Rhondda</strong> Heritage ParkDistance: 1.5 milesSurface: Countryside paths / TarmacNearest railway stations: TrehafodTourist Information: PontypriddOn this circular route there are plenty ofviewpoints at which to stop and admire thelower <strong>Rhondda</strong> Valley and <strong>Rhondda</strong>Heritage Park. Walkers can see the collieryin its landscape setting, with its reclaimedtips of colliery waste and the old routesused to transport coal. The geography ofthe narrow, sheer-sided valley is seen at itsdramatic best from this route, while otherpoints of interest include the Darren y Pistyllwaterfall and the Gethin Terrace.This way-marked route, although short,includes a steep climb. It may be unevenand muddy in places and strong footwear isrecommended. The walk starts and finishesat the <strong>Rhondda</strong> Heritage Park’s free carpark.14

Waymarked anddetailed on OS map(Explorer 151).Pontypridd Circular - A 12 milecircuit in the hills around Pontypridd.The waymarked walk passes throughancient woods, opencommon, moorland,farmland andpasture, crossing therivers Taff and<strong>Rhondda</strong>. It climbsto panoramicvantage points forviews across thevalleys to the seaand to the BreconBeacons.16
