Despite improvement <strong>in</strong> the analysis of target unit activation, however, the analysis oftotal orthographic activation <strong>in</strong> Simulation 4 was not so positive. Specifically, it appears asif the reduction <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>hibition from letter units to orthographic units exacerbated the consequencesof the marg<strong>in</strong>al difference between graphemic controls and <strong>phonological</strong> primes<strong>in</strong> neighborhood size—yield<strong>in</strong>g significantly greater total orthographic activation fromgraphemic controls than from <strong>phonological</strong> primes. Although we acknowledge that thisis an undesirable outcome, we also posit that it is possible to construct a lexical decisionrule that does not take <strong>in</strong>to account total orthographic activation. For this reason, wefocus <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>in</strong> Simulation 5 on improv<strong>in</strong>g the model’s per<strong>for</strong>mance with regardto the analysis of the activation of target orthographic units.6.6. Brysbaert / Cognitive Psychology 53 (2006) 97–145 127Simulation 4 revealed scope <strong>for</strong> simulat<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>phonological</strong> <strong>prim<strong>in</strong>g</strong> effect on lexical decisionat prime exposure durations of 50 cycles and 100 cycles. At these time po<strong>in</strong>ts, <strong>phonological</strong>primes yielded greater activation <strong>in</strong> target orthographic units than did graphemiccontrols. The purpose of Simulation 5 was to explore whether there is a parameter set thatwould enable to the model to support a fast <strong>phonological</strong> <strong>prim<strong>in</strong>g</strong> effect (i.e., whethergreater activation of target orthographic units could be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>phonological</strong>primes than from graphemic controls at 25 cycles).6.6.1. Parameter setWe adopted the parameter set used <strong>in</strong> Simulation 4 with one alteration: The parametercontroll<strong>in</strong>g the strength of GPC excitation was <strong>in</strong>creased from 0.055 to 0.30. As <strong>in</strong> Simulations2 and 4, the nonlexical route of this parameterization of the DRC model operates<strong>in</strong> a rapid and near-parallel manner.6.6.2. ResultsThe analyses of total activation and of target orthographic unit activation were carriedout <strong>in</strong> the same manner as <strong>in</strong> Simulation 1. As <strong>in</strong> Simulation 4, results showedsignificantly greater total orthographic activation produced by graphemic controls thanby <strong>phonological</strong> primes at 25 cycles (M = .2043, t(111) = 3.67), 50 cycles(M = .2827, t(111) = 3.70), and 100 cycles (M = .2592, t(111) = 2.51). Conversely,results showed significantly greater activation of target orthographic units by <strong>phonological</strong>primes than by graphemic controls at 25 cycles (M = .0037, t(111) = 2.30,p < .05), 50 cycles (M = .1211, t(111) = 7.56), and 100 cycles (M = .1725,t(111) = 5.89).6.6.3. DiscussionSimulation 5 established that there is scope with<strong>in</strong> the DRC model to produce a fast<strong>phonological</strong> <strong>prim<strong>in</strong>g</strong> effect on lexical decision, when the model is controlled by a parameterset <strong>in</strong> which (a) the assembly of phonology occurs rapidly and <strong>in</strong> a near-parallel manner;(b) the contribution of assembled phonology to the activation of orthographic lexicalentries is strengthened substantially; and (c) the <strong>in</strong>hibition between letter representationsand orthographic lexical entries is virtually elim<strong>in</strong>ated. Under this parameterization, <strong>phonological</strong>primes yield greater activation <strong>in</strong> target orthographic units than do graphemiccontrol primes, and do so relatively early <strong>in</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g.
