WASHINGTON2003 Outlook 2003 OutlookHuskies Look to Get Back into Pac-10 RaceWith Explosive Offense and Veteran DefenseConsidered one of the favorites to contendfor the 2003 Pac-10 championship, the Washingtonfootball team will attempt to meet those expectationswith 14 returning starters and 46lettermen as the foundation for the team. The Huskies will feature a pair of the topplayers in the nation in quarterback Cody Pickettand wide receiver Reggie Williams. That duo, combined with the majority of the offensive line, wide receiver Charles Frederick and tailbackRich Alexis, could make the Huskies hard to stopon offense. Improving the running game to balanceout the attack will be the chief area ofimprovement for the offense. The Husky defense, while lacking a marqueestar, features seven returning starters. Headliningthat group is senior linebacker MarquisCooper, who led the team in tackles last season. The Huskies were among the nation’s top teamsagainst the run last year and should be considerablybetter in the secondary with the return of RocAlexander at cornerback and a healthy JimmyNewell at safety. The Huskies face a tremendous challengeto start the 2003 season when they travel to facedefending national champion Ohio State for anationally televised game. The Buckeyes couldcertainly serve as an example to the Huskies ofwhat type of improvement a team can make in asingle year. After going 7-6 in 2001, Ohio Stateposted a perfect 13-0 mark last year. Coming offtheir own 7-6 season that included a 34-24 loss toPurdue in the Sun Bowl, the Huskies have theirsights set on a similar turnaround.OffenseThe Huskies would like to strike a betterbalance between running and passing the ballduring the 2003 season. Last year, Washingtonbroke various school passing standards whenthey threw the ball 621 times during the season.Only Texas Tech (770) and Hawaii (731) threwthe ball more, both playing 14-game seasons. While the passing game was stellar, therushing game produced just 74.5 yards per game.An emphasis on improved line play and a coupleof talented redshirt freshmen at tailback couldhelp add more productivity to the ground attack.QuarterbackThe old adage in the Pac-10 is that it takesa senior quarterback to lead a team to the RoseBowl. That has been the case for nine of the last11 teams to win the conferencechampionship. Washington isfortunate to have veteransignalcaller Cody Pickett in thatrole. The fifth-year senior will bea top preseason candidate forboth the Davey O’Brien Awardand the Johnny Unitas GoldenArm Award, which are presentedto the nation’s top quarterback. He’s also considered one of thetop players to watch for theHeisman Trophy. WhileWashington’s more balanced approachmay mean that Pickettwill not duplicate the record numberof passing feats he accomplishedlast season, his ability tolead the Huskies to victoriescould mean much more in termsof individual awards.Pickett took full advantageof Washington’s game plan tothrow the ball in 2002. He passedfor more yards than any player inPac-10 history, including USCquarterback Carson Palmer, the Heisman Trophywinner. In the expanded 12-game season,Pickett threw for 4,458 yards, becoming the firstWide Receiver Reggie WilliamsQuarterback Cody PickettPac-10 signalcaller to pass for more than 4,000yards in a season. He also benefited by theNCAA’s decision to count postseason results inseason statistics for the first time.As it turned out, Pickett did not need theextra games to eclipse the existing Pac-10 passingrecord set by Washington State’s Ryan Leafin 1997. He blew by Leaf’s mark of 3,637 yardsduring the 11th game of the season.Pickett finished the year ranked secondnationally with 28.08 completions per game andwas third in total offense at 328.7 yards per game.He is the leading returning player for the 2003campaign in both categories. Only Hawaii’s TimmyChang returns with more total passing yards(4,474) than Pickett (4,458), but he racked up hisimpressive total in 14 games, one more than hisHusky counterpart.Already a four-time letterwinner, having beengranted a medical redshirt for the 1999 season inwhich played in just one game, Pickett enters hisfinal season at UW with 6,783 career passingyards. He needs to average 261 yards per gameas a senior to join the exclusive 10,000-yardpassing club.An extremely competitive athlete, Pickett30

2003 Outlook 2003 OutlookHUSKIESTailback Rich Alexishas demonstrated that he has a vast array ofpasses in his repertoire. He can throw the deepball — he has six pass completions of more than70 yards in his career — and has the touch to leadrunning backs as they run screen patterns.Pickett’s size and speed gives him great mobilityin the pocket and he has been called on to run theoption in the past. With 26 game appearancesand 23 career starts, he has the game savvy andleadership to guide a veteran offense that includes26 letterwinners.Pickett impressed Husky fans during hissophomore campaign when he suffered a painfulshoulder separation at midseason. He only allowedthe injury to keep him out of one gamebefore returning to his starting role, where hepromptly set the school single-game passingrecord with 455 yards against Arizona.Aside from Pickett, there are no other quarterbackson the roster that have played in a game.Sophomore Casey Paus and redshirt freshmanIsaiah Stanback will battle for the backup spot. The duo gives the Husky coaches some variety atthe position. The 6-foot-5 Paus is more of a classicdropback thrower while Stanback could be usedas a conventional passer or an option quarterback.Stanback is considered an outstandingathlete who presents Washington with the abilityto run the option.Running BackThe Huskies return two veterans at tailbackand will look to a pair of redshirt freshmen toimprove the productivity of the position. SeniorRich Alexis, the most veteran player at the position, missed spring drills while recuperating fromoff-season shoulder surgery.Alexis has appeared in 35 games, includingeight starts last season. He has rushed for 1,805yards and 24 touchdowns during his career.Alexis has also proven to be an effective passreceiver. Twenty-seven of his 44 career receptionscame last year, including seven catches ina game against Wyoming.Junior Chris Singleton was third on the teamin rushing in 2002 with 224 yards on 64 carries. His top outing came against UCLA when herushed 20 times for 92 yards. Singleton startedagainst the Bruins and Oregon State and hascarried the ball a total of 78 times during hiscareer. Two highly-touted redshirt freshmen, KennyJames and Shelton Sampson, bring additionalspeed to the position. James was regarded asone of the top prep running backs coming out ofthe high school ranks in 2001, having rushed for2,900 yards and 49 touchdowns during his senioryear. He missed most of spring practice due to asprained knee.Sampson won three-consecutive state 110-meter high-hurdle titles as a standout prep athlete.During the winter he competed for the Huskytrack team and ran a NCAA indoor qualifying timein the 200 meters. The Huskies return all of their fullbacks fromlast season. Heading that group is junior ZachOffensive tackle Khalif Barnes31Wide receiver Charles FrederickTuiasosopo, who moved to offense last springafter starting his career at outside linebacker. Hecarried the ball 15 times last season, the onlyplayer at the position to run the ball. Also returning to the position are sophomoreTy Eriks and senior Adam Seery. LikeTuiasosopo, Eriks started at UW as an outside

WASHINGTON2003 Outlook 2003 Outlooklinebacker. Seery moved into the position lastyear after playing quarterback and safety earlierin his career.Wide ReceiverWhile the ranks are lacking the large numberof returning veteran players from a year ago,the Husky wide receivers could be one of the topgroups in the country thanks to returning firstteamAll-American Reggie Williams and rapidlydevelopingjunior Charles Frederick.Washington lost four receivers who totaled121 receptions last year. Add departed tight endKevin Ware and that total grows to 163 catches.Williams and Frederick combined for 139 receptions.Williams, who in two years has establishedhimself as the top wideout in Washington history, will be a leading candidate for the 2003 BiletnikoffAward, presented to the nation’s top receiver. Hecaught 94 passes for 1,454 yards as a sophomoreand enters his junior season with 149career catches good for 2,427 yards. His twoyearyardage total is the best ever among Pac-10receivers.By comparison, USC standoutKeyshawn Johnson totaled 148 catches and 2,358yards in the 1994 and 1995 seasons, his juniorand senior seasons. In 2002, Williams ranked eighth nationallywith an average of 7.23 receptions per game andwas ninth in reception yards per game at 111.85.His highlights included a school-record 89-yardtouchdown catch against San Jose State, a lastminute80-yard game-winning TD receptionagainst Arizona and a 14-catch, 198-yard, threetouchdownperformance on the road at Oregon.Offensive tackle Todd BachertCenter Dan DicksWilliams was at his best down the stretch, helping the Huskies play themselves back intothe bowl picture. Dubbed “Mr. November,” Williamscaught 35 passes during Washington’s finalthree regular season games. That included a 12-reception, 169-yard performance at WashingtonState while being defended by Cougar All-Americacornerback Marcus Trufant.A strong, physical player, Williams has drawnraves by the Husky coaches for his often overlookedblocking skills. He joined the ranks of theHusky track team during the winter quarter towork on his speed and anchored the team’s4x400-meter relay squad this spring. While Williams was grabbing most of theheadlines last season, the development ofFrederick as another reliable receiver was equallyimportant to the Huskies’ offensive plans. Whilehe only started twice, Frederick caught 45 passesfor 651 yards, and also acted as UW’s top puntand kickoff returner last year.Frederick’s speed and elusiveness makeshim a dangerous player in the open field. He hadat least two catches in every game after spendinghis freshman year concentrating on special teamsduties. That maturation began during the Huskies’off-season workout program when Frederickelected not to return to the UW basketball teamand instead concentrate on football conditioning.Justin Robbins, who caught 22 catches as afreshman in 2000, will rejoin the team this fall aftermissing most of the last two years due to injury. Also fitting into the position lineup is redshirt32freshman Jordan Slye, who moved from defensiveback during the spring, and walkon MattGriffith. Several incoming freshmen are also expectedto compete for playing time at the position.Tight EndWashington has developed a reputation asthe best school in the country for tight ends sincethe early ’90s, though who will be the next playerto step into that spotlight is unclear. While sophomoreJoe Toledo received a generous amount ofplaying time in 2002, it was primarily in two tightend sets. Toledo sat out the spring due to shouldersurgery.Washington took the step of recruiting JonLyon, a top junior-college tight end, to stabilizethe position. Lyon enrolled at the University inJanuary and participated in spring practices.Redshirt freshman Ben Bandel also impressedthe coaches during the spring and Dash Crutchleymoved from the defensive line to the position toprovide more depth. Sophomore Andy Heateralso returns after playing in three games in 2002.Offensive LineThe Huskies return 10 lettermen and threestarters on the offensive line. The list of starters includes tackle KhalifBarnes, center Todd Bachert and tackle NickNewton, all be third-year starters.Last year, the group provided security whilePickett was attempting a record 612 pass attempts. The Huskies surrendered just 37 sacksduring the season, one for every 17.5 times theteam tried to throw the ball. Run-blocking, however, was more problematic. The Huskies aver-Defensive tackle Terry Johnson

2003 Outlook 2003 OutlookHUSKIESschools last year. Washington’s secondary, whichhas been riddled by injuries the past two seasons, returns 11 players who have earned atleast one letter. The Husky defense ranked 11th nationallyagainst the run, allowing just 97.7 yards pergame. That was the best total since the 1991National Championship season and the fifth-besttotal since the 1964 season. During the final fivegames of the regular season the Husky secondaryallowed just 210 passing yards per game andtotaled nine interceptions, while allowing only sixtouchdowns.Linebacker Marquis Cooperaged just 74.5 yards per game, ranking ninth inthe Pac-10.With Bachert, a Rimington Trophy candidatein 2003, out of spring drills, the coachingstaff gave junior Dan Dicks the opportunity to playcenter. Dicks was so impressive that Bachert willprobably move back to tackle in 2003, the positionhe played two years ago. Rob Meadow is alikely candidate to move into a starting role atguard, while Brad Vanneman, Robin Kezirianand senior walkon Mike Thompson give the centerposition excellent depth.Behind Meadow at strongside guard will beClay Walker and Jason Simonson. Tusi Sa’au isthe likely backup to Newton at the other guardspot.Ryan Brooks and Francisco Tipoti figure asthe backups at the tackle position. Overall, theHusky offensive line boasts considerable experienceat the starting positions, and reliable backupsat each spot.DefenseWashington will build its defense aroundeight returning starters and 22 returning lettermen. The Huskies will look to replace departed startersJafar Williams at outside linebacker, Kai Ellis atdefensive end and Ben Mahdavi at inside linebacker. Those three ranked among the top-sixtacklers on the 2002 team. Mahdavi, a three-yearstarter, tied for the team lead with 100 tackles.Like the other Pac-10 schools, the Huskiescould benefit by the fact that so many talentedsenior quarterbacks graduated from conferenceSafety Jimmy Newell33Linebacker Greg CarothersDefensive LineThree key starters on the Husky defensiveline return in 2003. That group includes seniordefensive tackle Terry Johnson, junior defensivetackle Josh Miller and junior defensive endManase Hopoi. Senior tackle Jerome Stevens, akey reserve, is also back as well as a cast ofreserve players who have all seen valuable playingtime. Miller was forced to sit out spring balldue to a back injury.Johnson, a first-time starter in 2002, sackedopponent quarterbacks five times, while Hopoiearned seven sacks and 17 tackles-for-loss. Miller, who started every game in 2002, had 33 totaltackles, including seven for lost yards.Juniors Tui Alailefaleula and Junior Coffinboth return as backups at tackle with two years ofplaying experience behind them.Several younger players will join one juniorcollegetransfer in competing for their first playingtime. The Huskies have a litter of young playersseeking their first game action this year. Redshirtfreshmen Dan Milsten, Stanley Daniels, BrandonAla, Donny Mateaki and true freshman JordanReffett will all be in the mix up front, while juniocollegetransfer Mike Mapu teams with sophomoreGraham Lasee to provide depth at tackle.LinebackerTo help compensate for the loss of two keylinebackers, the Huskies integrated a little bit ofnew and old in to the position. The new is NotreDame transfer Cory Jones, who will compete forone the inside positions. The old is senior GregCarothers, who moves into the SAM outsidelinebacker role after starting at safety the past twoyears. The move is not completely new territoryfor Carothers, who played the role during theHuskies’ nickel package in the past.Heading up the returning linebacking corpsis senior Marquis Cooper. He tied Mahdavi lastyear for the team lead in total tackles with 100after moving from an outside to inside position. Two veteran reserves expected to join him at theother inside linebacker position are juniors TimGalloway and Joe Lobendahn. Galloway, whomissed spring drills due to shoulder surgery, had26 tackles while playing in all 13 games last year.Lobendahn started twice last year, played in all13 games and totaled 23 tackles. Redshirt freshmanScott White was impressive during the spring

WASHINGTON2003 Outlook 2003 OutlookDefensive end Manase Hopoiand finished the period as Cooper’s backup.Senior Tyler Krambrink is back at the outsidelinebacker spot after playing in nine gameslast season.Defensive BackfieldWashington has 11 letterwinners returningto its four positions in the defensive backfield.Included in that group are eight players whostarted at some point last season. The onlyplayers not to return from last year’s unit areCarothers, who will switch to outside linebacker, and Nate Robinson, who gave up football thisspring after leading the Husky basketball team inscoring in 2002-03. Robinson started the final sixgames in 2002 and proved to be outstanding incoverage, with two interceptions and six passbreakups to go with 34 tackles.Helping to replace Robinson will be seniorRoc Alexander, a star in 2000 who missed sevengames last season due to a shoulder injury. Thespeedy Alexander and junior Derrick Johnsongive the Huskies twosolid veterans at cornerback.Alexander has broken up 15 passes during hiscareer, and has accounted for four interceptions.Johnson made a successful return to thedefense last year after missing the entire 2001season with a significant foot injury. He started all13 games and came on strong late in the year, earning back-to-back Pac-10 defensive player ofthe week honor, for his play against Oregon Stateand Oregon. Johnson led the cornerbacks with56 tackles and was first on the team with fiveinterceptions and 10 pass breakups.Chris Massey, a veteran of 35 games, figuresstrongly into the mix at cornerback. He has67 career tackles to go with 10 pass breakupsand three interceptions. Redshirt freshman MattFountaine will make his debut at cornerback thisfall, competing with junior Sam Cunningham andclassmate Kim Taylor for playing time.Having battled through several injuries, juniorJimmy Newell gives the Huskies a solid playerat free safety. He accounted for 35 tackles beforea sprained ankle kept him out of the final tworegular-season contests. James Sims will pushfor playing time after starting five times last yearwhen Newell out of the lineup. Freshman B.J.Newberry, who plays primarily on special teams,is also drawing more notice at the position.Evan Benjamin and Owen Biddle give theHuskies several good options at strong safety.Benjamin started three times last year at safetywhile playing in all 13 games. He accounted for46 tackles, and is the fourth-leading returningtackler from last year’s squad. Biddle, who startedthe last three games of 2003 at free safety, hasappeared in 33 games during his Husky career.Defensive tackle Jerome Stevensmost successful kickers in UW history. He booted61 field goals during his tenure, the second mostby a Husky, while his 331 career points also rankssecond all-time among UW players. McLaughlinaveraged 38.5 yards per punt as a sophomoreafter posting a 41.2 yard average as a freshman. To fill those positions, the Huskies recruiteda pair of scholarship kickers. Michael Braunstein,a place kicker from Gilbert, Ariz.; and Sean Douglas,a punter from Bellevue, Neb. The two willcompete for the kicking jobs during fall camp.Walk-on placekickers Evan Knudson andSafety Evan BenjaminSpecial TeamsWashington loses both kickers and deepsnappers from 2002, but returns all of its top kickreturn specialists. Another player the Huskies willbe hard-pressed to replace is Wilbur Hooks, anexcellent punt coverage specialist.Gone from last year’s team are four-yearplacekicker John Anderson and punter DerekMcLaughlin, the team’s primary punter the pasttwo seasons. McLaughlin left for a two-year churchsponsored mission following the Huskies’ appearancein the Sun Bowl.Anderson finished his career as one of the34Cornerback Derrick Johnson

2003 Outlook 2003 OutlookHUSKIESRicardo DoValle, and punter Isaak Woldeit were the Huskies’ topperformningkickers this spring, and will challenge the freshmen. While the Husky special teams will see new faces in the kicking game, the return team boasts a solid inventory of veteran players.Frederick returns as Washington’s principal kick returner from lastseason. He was the only player to return a punt for the Huskies last season, averaging 8.1 yards per return on 18 attempts last season. He also had 13punt returns as a freshman, averaging 14.6 yards per runback. Frederickaccounted for a school-record 30 of Washington’s 39 kickoff returns in2002, averaging an even 20 yards per return; up from the 16.5 average hehad on 13 runbacks in 2001.Alexander and Derrick Johnson are other players who have returnedkicks for the Huskies. Johnson returned a combined 36 kicks as a freshmanseason in 2000, and ranked 21st nationally with a 24.2-yard kickoff returnaverage that season. The speedy Alexander led the Pac-10 in kickoff returns and finishedsixth nationally in 2001 with a 29.2-yard average. He recorded three of thetop-10 kickoff returns in UW history that season, highlighted by a 95-yardrunback for a touchdown against Idaho. Both of Washington’s’ deep snappers, Ben Mahdavi (long) and ElliottZajac (short) graduated. An injury prevented Zajac from snapping for halfof the 2002 schedule, allowing Tim Galloway to gain valuable experience.Jason Benn, a redshirt freshman, is considered another skilled candidateto fill the deep-snapping void. The ScheduleIn addition to its eight-game Pac-10 schedule, the Huskies will hostIndiana, Idaho and Nevada in non-conference games at Husky Stadium, and will travel to Ohio State on Aug. 30. The Pac-10 schedule includeshome dates with Stanford, USC, Oregon and Washington State, and roadcontests at Oregon State, UCLA, Arizona and California.
