In 1954 the first fully poweredlawn mower, the 'Suffolk Colt', wasintroduced, heralding a whole newera of development in this field.The Sifbronze division extended itsrange to include <strong>welding</strong> equipmentsuch as blowpipes <strong>and</strong> gasregulators.Louis Tibbenham decided to retire in1955, h<strong>and</strong>ing over to his son, Frank.In 1958 the company became apart ofthe Qualcast Group <strong>and</strong> then, in 1967Qualcast merged with Birmid Industries.Subsequently, Louis' gr<strong>and</strong>son, Paddy,became the Director responsible for Sifbronze.Developments in <strong>welding</strong> in the 1960s weresuch that new techniques like semi-automaticMIG-<strong>welding</strong> were introduced <strong>and</strong> with them therequirement for new, high quality materials. Atthis point Sifbronze introduced the consumableelectrode wire SIF-Mig, a shaved aluminium wireto ensure consistent, high-quality welds. Whenthe QE2 was built, the aluminium <strong>welding</strong> of hersuperstructure was carried out using SIF-Mig. Atthe same time the traditional methods of supply,direct to the end-user, promoted through themagazine Siftips, began to change. This meantcreating a whole new supply structure based on<strong>welding</strong> distributors <strong>and</strong> engineering merchants.'Will The Welder.' A company magazine, Siftips, wasproduced in the early 1930's. The aim was to provideusers with ideas <strong>and</strong> tips as to how to get the most outof their <strong>welding</strong> equipment. Will The Welder, acharacter in the magazine, was the vehicle for this <strong>and</strong>became one of the most readily identifiablepersonalities in <strong>welding</strong>.TODAYIn recent years, the company has taken positivesteps to focus on its SIF br<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> heritage inthe <strong>welding</strong> industry.
