Under the direction of conductor Jeffrey Rink, thesoloists for the concert will be guitarists Robert Ward, ApostolosParaskevas, Alexander Dunn and Randy Pile.The Concierto Andaluz was written in 1967 as a commission bythe Romero Quartet, who gave the first performance in 1968 andthen traveled throughout the world performing this work. It iswritten in the standard three movements; fast-slow-fast. The concertodraws on flamenco dance forms, moving from a bolerothrough bulerias, zapateado, and sevillanas with a naturalnessand ease that infuse the work with a real dynamic energy andexcitement. The second movement (adagio) is Rodrigo at hislyrical best.The guitar soloists all have extensive backgrounds in a variety ofsettings. <strong>Guitar</strong>ist Apostolos Paraskevas has performed more that200 solo recitals in the US, Greece, Italy, France, England andCuba. He is the artistic director of an international guitar festivalin Corfu, Greece and is currently in the final stages of doctoralstudies at <strong>Boston</strong> University. Robert Ward has performed concertsin Europe, Texas, Hawaii, throughout California and in theNortheast. Recent performances have included Rodrigo’sConcerto de Aranjuez and The Concierto Madrigal. <strong>Guitar</strong>istRandy Pile heads the guitar departments at Palomar College andMesa College in San Diego. He has performed throughoutEurope, Australia, New Zealand and the US and has appearedwith the famed Romero Quartet on many occasions, substitutingfor Celedonio at various times. Alexander Dunn heads the guitardepartments at Victoria Conservatory and the University ofVictoria in Canada. He has performed throughout Europe,Canada, Japan, and the US and has played both with the RomeroQuartet and as a duo partner with Pepe Romero.The concert on January 12 will be held at Aquinas College inNewton and starts at 7:30 p.m; there will be a pre-concert lectureat 6:30. Tickets for the concert are $17, orchestra; $13, mezzanine;$10, students. There will also be a guitar master class onJanuary 11 from 10:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. at the Villa VictoriaCultural Center in <strong>Boston</strong>.
