COMMUNITYThe amazing maritime raceSome 900 participants from <strong>Keppel</strong> took part in the four-hour race which was supported by <strong>Keppel</strong> O&MScrambling around Singapore wasnot how 21 year old Tan Wei Zhen,an intern at <strong>Keppel</strong> Singmarine,expected to learn aboutSingapore’s rich maritime history.That, however, was what she andher team mates did when theytook part in the Amazing MaritimeRace, Singapore’s first maritimetreasure hunt.On 25 April <strong>2010</strong>, some 900participants, including 13 teamsfrom <strong>Keppel</strong> took part in the fourhourrace which was supported by<strong>Keppel</strong> O&M. Through interactivepuzzles and interesting locations,the race provides a platform toeducate the public on the country’svibrant maritime industry.Travelling only by public transportor by foot, Wei Zhen and herteam visited 14 race check pointsaround Singapore. Their journeytook them to different locationswith rich maritime history andsignificance, including Marinaat <strong>Keppel</strong> Bay, the former siteof <strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyard, as well asSingapore Polytechnic.She shared, “It was an excitingand educational race for us. Wevisited places we had never seenbefore and discovered a differentside of Singapore. I am definitelymore appreciative of Singapore’smaritime history.”Helping to coordinate the <strong>Keppel</strong>teams, Ainon Haji Mohd Taibof the <strong>Keppel</strong> Recreation ClubSports Organising Committee,said, “For <strong>Keppel</strong>ites, this wasan opportunity to support theindustry and promote teamworkin a competitive yet educationalway. The teams have to stretchtheir resourcefulness and mentalprowess to solve clues, completetasks and answer questions onSingapore’s maritime cluster andheritage.”Organised by the Association ofSingapore Maritime Industries,together with the Maritime andPort Authority of Singapore,Singapore Maritime Foundationand Singapore ShippingAssociation, the Amazing Racewas part of a series of activitiesunder the Singapore MaritimeWeek <strong>2010</strong>.<strong>Offshore</strong><strong>Marine</strong> <strong>May</strong> – <strong>June</strong> <strong>2010</strong>33
