BUSINESSKPMI posts 15% rise in 1Q profitsSubic Shipyard is one of three shipyardsoperated by KPMI<strong>Keppel</strong> <strong>Marine</strong> Philippines, Inc(KPMI), a subsidiary of <strong>Keppel</strong>O&M, reported a consolidated netprofit of P185.2 million in the firstquarter of <strong>2010</strong>, 15.3% higher thana year ago.Its revenue for the periodamounted to P495.7 million, whileoperating profit was 63.2% highercompared with the same periodlast year, reaching P131 million,due to higher margins and loweroperating costs.Shiprepair contributed 81.5% tototal sales while shipbuilding andfabrication contributed 18.5%.For the second quarter of <strong>2010</strong>,KPMI expects more vessels fromthe domestic market to visit itsshipyards for major repair works.KPMI, comprising <strong>Keppel</strong> BatangasShipyard and Subic Shipyard &Engineering, Inc., serves domesticand international ship owners.Safety rewardsFor clocking eight million incidentfreemanhours during theconstruction of semisubmersiblerig, Maersk Deliverer, MaerskDrilling has awarded a safetybonus of $48,000 to <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS.Maersk Deliverer is the latestaddition to the trio of DSS TM21 deepwater semisubmersibledrilling rigs built by <strong>Keppel</strong> FELSfor Maersk Drilling. The unit wasdelivered 43 days early in Aprilthis year.<strong>Keppel</strong> FELS’s Project Manager forthe rig, Yeong Yew Ming said, “Inthe months spent building MaerskDeliverer, both our project teamshave always placed the utmostpriority on safety. BUSINESSFundamental demandAt the Asia Oil & Gas Conferencein <strong>June</strong>, CB Choo, CEO of <strong>Keppel</strong>Corporation and Chairmanof <strong>Keppel</strong> O&M, shared withSri Jegarajah of CNBC Asia onthe industry’s outlook and thechallenges and opportunities inthe face of the Gulf of Mexicocrisis.Is there fear within the industrythat we are going to see aregulatory backlash arising fromthe oil spill incident in the USGulf of Mexico?The moratorium that the USgovernment declared in the USGulf is going to affect all the rigsthere and their operators.Many of them will not wait untilthe moratorium is lifted. Theywill likely move the rigs outbecause there are deepwaterareas in other parts of the worldwhich need such rigs for drillingactivities.The authorities may swing theother way and be overly strict.When that happens, the costwill go up for drillers and oilcompanies, and that wouldaffect the business in the end.Will the regulatory backlash createpressure on margins for yourcompany?What we will see is that new rigswill be required because the oldand less capable rigs may not beallowed to drill in deepwater wells.We need to have a larger sphere ofsafety, not only on the rig, but alsoall the equipment that goes intothe rig.To make sure that things don’t gowrong, there will be more lines ofdefense to ensure that there is noblowout, so all this will add costto the industry. We are in a goodposition to provide this support tothe industry.Will we see a slowdown in newrig orders? Or could this beoffset by increased services andmaintenance contracts?For shipyards like <strong>Keppel</strong>, we canbuild new rigs, as well as repairand upgrade them.We think there will be morestringent safety requirements andsurvey compliances. BUSINESSRigging up repairsProject teams from Stena Drilling and <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS worked hand in glove torestore Stena Clyde to tip-top conditionBrasFELS completed work on Pride CarlosWalter safely, on time and within budgetSemisubmersible (semi) drillingrig, Stena Clyde shone with anew sheen of pride in <strong>June</strong>, afterundergoing repairs and a majorupgrading programme within aquick turnaround of under 60 daysat <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS.The rig, which came fromAustralia, underwent a SpecialPeriodic Survey (SPS), enginereplacement and mooring winchsystem upgrade.To speed up work, <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS’sFlying Squad decommissioned theengine room while the rig was enroute to Singapore, so that it couldbe removed immediately uponarrival at the yard in April.The repair team onsitesynchronised special survey andremedial works while undertakingswift execution of top-grade steeland piping renewal works. Thehull was also refurbished to mintcondition.Donald Bradford, Project Managerfrom Stena Drilling, shared, “Ithas been an absolute pleasure toundertake Stena Clyde’s SPS andupgrading works at <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS.The planning and execution phaseof the project was clearly wellconsideredand daily updates andfeedback were essential to meetthe tight deadlines.“In addition to the originalcontractual scope, the shipyard alsotook on additional work withinthe allocated time. Stena wishesto express our sincere gratitudeand congratulate <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS forits excellent service, quality andprofessionalism.”Over in Brazil, <strong>Keppel</strong>’s BrasFELSyard has completed the repair andupgrading of Pride International’ssemi, Pride Carlos Walter. BUSINESSSolid progress<strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyard, Frontier Drilling and Shell celebrated the naming of Bully I, which has achieved overfive million man-hours without lost-time incidents to date<strong>Keppel</strong> O&M celebrated severalkey construction and namingmilestones with their offshore andmarine customers in the months of<strong>May</strong> and <strong>June</strong>.First Bully namedOn 19 <strong>June</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, <strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyardcelebrated the naming of thedrillship Bully I. It is the first oftwo Bully drillships <strong>Keppel</strong> isundertaking for a companyjointly owned by Frontier Drillingand Shell.Held at <strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyard, Tuas, thevessel was named by Lady Sponsor,Susan Ward, Head of Mergers& Acquisitions and CommercialFinance, Americas, Shell.The project was a culmination ofthe close cooperation between<strong>Keppel</strong> and Frontier Drilling.This partnership extended to thedrillship’s hull assembly productionphase at Shanghai Shipyard, where<strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyard provided a teamon site to collaborate with FrontierDrilling during the block erectionphase prior to the vessel’s arrivalhere in 2008.Strong foundationsProject teams from <strong>Keppel</strong> FELSand Ensco plc celebrated thekeel-laying for ENSCO 8506, theseventh unit of the ENSCO 8500Series ® semisubmersible drillingrigs built exclusively by <strong>Keppel</strong> FELSon 25 <strong>May</strong> <strong>2010</strong>.Backed by strong executionabilities and familiarity withthe ENSCO 8500 Series ® design,<strong>Keppel</strong> FELS is well on track for theconstruction of the remaining fourrigs.Cut of finesseHistory was in the making at thestrike steel ceremony for SaudiAramco’s first purpose-built KFELSSuper B Class jackup at <strong>Keppel</strong> FELSon 4 <strong>May</strong> <strong>2010</strong>.The cutting of the rig’s first steelcomes just about three monthsafter contract signing between<strong>Keppel</strong> FELS and Aramco OverseasCompany. BUSINESSKudos to excellent service<strong>Keppel</strong> FELS continues to add to itsreputation as the trusted offshorerig repair and upgrading specialistworldwide.Songa Mercur has returned toexploration work off SakhalinIsland, following the on-time,on-budget completion of specialperiodic survey (SPS) works.The semisubmersible rig, belongingto Norwegian driller Songa<strong>Offshore</strong>, departed Singapore on11 <strong>May</strong> <strong>2010</strong>.Trond Christensen, COO of Songa<strong>Offshore</strong>, commended the projectteams, saying, “Thanks for a safeand efficient SPS and operationalpreparedness work carried out onSonga Mercur.“The massive job and tasksundertaken have been carried outto highest standards, exceedingour expectations and we are verypleased to see that the rig leavethe yard in good condition, readyfor the next five years of service.”Songa Mercur underwent safe and efficientinspection and maintenance works at<strong>Keppel</strong> FELSLaunching into actionIt was a milestone occasion forthe employees and customers of<strong>Keppel</strong> Singmarine, who gatheredto celebrate the launch of aMulti-Purpose Supply andSupport Vessel (MPSSV), H344,on 15 <strong>May</strong> <strong>2010</strong>.Amid favourable weather, thevessel slided gracefully into thewaters, along the 180-metre longslipway at <strong>Keppel</strong> Singmarine.<strong>Keppel</strong> Singmarine celebrated the successful launch of H344, the fourth state-of-the-artvessel it is building for GreatshipConstructed for GreatshipGlobal <strong>Offshore</strong> Services Pte. Ltd(Greatship), a member of the GreatEastern Shipping Group of India,H344 is expected to be deliveredby third quarter <strong>2010</strong>.Hoe Eng Hock, ED of <strong>Keppel</strong>Singmarine, said, “We are proudto be building the fourth state-ofthe-artvessel for Greatship, whichwill be a powerful addition totheir fleet. This year’s campaignslogan “Safety is in my hands”aims to change mindset, and builda strong safety culture across thedifferent industries in Singapore.This is the third year that <strong>Keppel</strong>is supporting the National safetyefforts with a contribution of$100,000. TECHNOLOGYA squeaky-clean solutionBefore the cleaningAfter the cleaningClose-up pictures of the tank surface conditions before and after cleaning using Bio-OSRThe surface condition oTank cleaning is a necessaryprocedure for tankers before theyundergo repair or conversions.The conventional tank cleaningmethod can be a potentiallydangerous operation as it requiresa large number of workers to enterthe tanks to manually scrape offthe oily sludge attached to thebulkheads and the interior.they also contain Volatile OrganicCompounds, which are toxic tohuman beings.In view of the potential hazards,KOMtech has developed a moreenvironmentally-friendly, effectiveand safer solvent, Bio-Oil & SludgeRemover (Bio-OSR) for tankcleaning.After the sludge has beenremoved from the tanks, tanksurfaces, both bulkheads and theinterior of the tanks have to bethoroughly cleaned. Conventionalpetrochemical-based solventsare normally used to clean thesurface. These solvents are madeof non-renewable petroleum andpetrochemical products, and theyare highly flammable. In addition,Unlike conventional cleaningsolvents Bio-OSR is formulatedwith biodiesel and some specialadditives, to meet the safetystandard and heavy duty cleaningrequirement. Bio-OSR is effectivein removing oily contaminantsassociated with oil storage andproduction systems. TECHNOLOGYOriginalconditionAfter cleaningusing Bio-OSRf FPSO heavy fuel oil tank before and after the cleaning with Bio-OSRTank cleaning is a necessary procedure for tankersbefore they undergo repairs or conversionsIn terms of physical and chemicalproperties, impact on humanhealth and the environment,and effectiveness in tankcleaning, Bio-OSR has advantagesover the conventional OSRs.Bio-OSR is much less flammableand combustible. It is not harmfulto humans or the environment. Itis ten times less toxic than tablesalt and does not contain anyhazardous air pollutants or ozonedepleting chemicals.Bio-OSR is highly biodegradable.If it is spilled accidentally, Bio-OSR biodegrades four to fivetimes faster than petroleumdiesel. In addition, it is madefrom renewable feedstock, andits production process generatesless hazardous waste than that ofpetroleum diesel.In addition, Bio-OSR is anexcellent solvent for heavy, waxyoil and sludge as it has a Kauributanol(KB) value as high as 60.Conventional OSR and petroleumdiesel, by comparison, onlyhave a KB value of around 50.Another feature of Bio-OSR is itsnatural lubricating property. Bosses must set goodexamples and show their peoplethat they care for them,” he said.“Chua Chor Teck always showed hisconcern for the young people andgave them opportunities to shine.This is something that I have alsocome to embrace.”Topping off an inspiring 39-year career with the group, Goh Boon Kiat shares his passion for thebusiness and compassion for the peopleIn a transient job market, fiveyears might seem like a long timeto stay in one company. After all,according to the latest statisticsfrom the manpower ministry, theaverage Singaporean stays in hisor her job for a tad under twoyears, before making the switchfor another.“A management style that overemphasises performance doesn’tbreed loyalty. Even at senior levels,the people tend to be shortsighted– they are driven by figures notownership. They do what isrequired, and that’s it.“The challenge is how we canmotivate people to give their best,and think and act in the interest ofthe company over the long term,”said Goh Boon Kiat, who recentlyretired as a Director of <strong>Keppel</strong>Singmarine, and for TechnologyForesight at KOMtech.“I think this is something that,at <strong>Keppel</strong>, we have managed todo well,” mused the gentlemanof 62, who had spent his entirecareer as a <strong>Keppel</strong>ite, playingpivotal roles in the offshore andmarine businesses, includingthe integration of <strong>Keppel</strong> O&Min 2002.The ‘secret’ that continues to fuelgenerations of resilient <strong>Keppel</strong>iteslike himself, Goh reveals, is asimple combination of passionand compassion – passion forthe business and compassion forthe people.Goh remembers being packed offon his first overseas stint in themid 70s by Chua Chor Teck, thelate MD of <strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyard. “I wasassigned to study the feasibility ofsetting up a Philippine yard, afterjust three to four years in <strong>Keppel</strong>.Back then, I didn’t even knowthe proper methods of assessingcommercial acquisitions,” he said.The Philippines was a captivemarket served by some 3,000 shipsthat provided the main mode oftransport across its 7,000 islands.The fleet owners, 90 percent ofwhom were Chinese, were largelydissatisfied with the servicesprovided by a handful of poorlyrun local shipyards.“I thought that if we were there,we would be able to serve thecustomers much better,” said Goh,who returned to headquarterswith a positive recommendation,only to be sent right back againto set up the new yard. “ChuaChor Teck told me, ‘If you think it’sgood, then you go!’”“All I can say is that, it was a leap30<strong>Offshore</strong><strong>Marine</strong> <strong>May</strong> – <strong>June</strong> <strong>2010</strong>

He had literally put CB Chooand me there to start up fromscratch.”And from scratch it was inBatangas where <strong>Keppel</strong>established its first overseas yard.“A lot of ground work was needed.We even had to develop a poolof subcontractors to support ouroperations. These people weremainly fisherman and farmers whoworked for us on a part time basisand we had to provide training forall of them,” Goh recalls.Goh eventually became the VP of<strong>Keppel</strong> Philippines Shipyard, andone of the pioneers of <strong>Keppel</strong>Group’s first significant overseasventure. Upon returning toSingapore in the 80s, he went onto assume several senior positionsacross <strong>Keppel</strong>’s subsidiariesincluding that of GM and Directorat <strong>Keppel</strong> FELS.Then, in 2000, he was thrownanother challenge to lead ataskforce in the restructuring of<strong>Keppel</strong>’s offshore and marinebusinesses, a move that wouldthrust the group as the globalindustry leader.“In the first year of the integration,we were able to achieve costsavingsof about $17 million, justby putting people together andkeeping them focused,” he said.Following the successfulrestructuring exercise, Goh wasassigned to head specialisedshipbuilding arm, an instrumentalrole for which he is wellremembered.“I chose to focus <strong>Keppel</strong>Singmarine on the building of<strong>Offshore</strong> Support Vessels (OSVs)because the offshore market waspicking up and there would be aneed for such vessels,” he shared.“Moreover, the main shipyardswith that were experienced in theconstruction of offshore supportvessels were located in Europe,where costs are high; <strong>Keppel</strong>Singmarine would have a costadvantage over these Europeanyards.”Under Goh’s leadership, <strong>Keppel</strong>Singmarine quickly rose to becomeone of the world’s foremostshipbuilding yards with its owndesigns and engineering expertisefor OSVs and tugboats.“I couldn’t have done it all alone.A leader must be supported bygood people. COMMUNITYThe amazing maritime raceSome 900 participants from <strong>Keppel</strong> took part in the four-hour race which was supported by <strong>Keppel</strong> O&MScrambling around Singapore wasnot how 21 year old Tan Wei Zhen,an intern at <strong>Keppel</strong> Singmarine,expected to learn aboutSingapore’s rich maritime history.That, however, was what she andher team mates did when theytook part in the Amazing MaritimeRace, Singapore’s first maritimetreasure hunt.On 25 April <strong>2010</strong>, some 900participants, including 13 teamsfrom <strong>Keppel</strong> took part in the fourhourrace which was supported by<strong>Keppel</strong> O&M. Through interactivepuzzles and interesting locations,the race provides a platform toeducate the public on the country’svibrant maritime industry.Travelling only by public transportor by foot, Wei Zhen and herteam visited 14 race check pointsaround Singapore. Their journeytook them to different locationswith rich maritime history andsignificance, including Marinaat <strong>Keppel</strong> Bay, the former siteof <strong>Keppel</strong> Shipyard, as well asSingapore Polytechnic.She shared, “It was an excitingand educational race for us.
