The effortrequired to remove the column assembly maybe quite high, due to the close tolerance ofthe lower column tube support bush in itslocation.Models with air bagWarning: Handle the air bagwith extreme care as aprecaution against personalinjury, and always hold it withthe cover facing away from your body. If indoubt concerning any proposed workinvolving the air bag or its control circuitry, consult a Ford dealer or other qualifiedspecialist.11 Disconnect the battery negative (earth)lead (refer to Chapter 5A, Section 1).Warning: Before proceeding, wait a minimum of 15 minutes,as a precaution againstaccidental firing of the air bag. This period ensures that any stored energyin the back-up capacitor is dissipated.12 Undo the screws, and remove thesteering column lower shroud.13 Undo the two external screws and the twointernal screws and remove the steeringcolumn upper shroud.14 Turn the steering wheel as necessary sothat one of the air bag module retaining boltsbecomes accessible from the rear of thesteering wheel. Undo the bolt, then turnthe steering wheel again until the second boltis accessible. Undo this bolt also.15 Withdraw the air bag module from thesteering wheel far enough to access thewiring multi-plug. Some force may be neededto free the module from the additional steeringwheel spoke retainers.16 Disconnect the multi-plug from the rear ofthe module, and remove the module from thevehicle.Warning: Position the air bagmodule in a safe place, with themechanism facing downwardsas a precaution againstaccidental operation.17 Turn the steering wheel so that theroadwheels are in the straight-ahead position, then remove the ignition key to lock thesteering.18 Release the wiring harness from the sideof the steering column and disconnect the airbag module wiring multi-plug (yellow lead).19 Disconnect the wiring multi-plugs fromthe steering column multi-function switchassembly.20 Disconnect the ignition switch wiringmulti-plug connector and remove the loomplate from its location on the left-hand side ofthe steering column.21 Where applicable, undo the single screwand withdraw the Passive Anti-Theft System(PATS) transceiver from the ignitionswitch/steering lock barrel (see illustration19.12).22 Unclip the bonnet release cable abutmentfrom its location in the steering column lockhousing, then detach the cable from thebonnet release lever by aligning the cablecore with the slot on the release lever andwithdrawing it through that slot. Detach thespring from the release lever arms, thendisengage the arms from the steering columnlock housing and remove the bonnet releaselever.23 Remove the nuts securing the steeringcolumn mounting bracket.24 Remove the pinch-bolt securing the lowersteering shaft universal joint to the steeringrack pinion splined shaft, located at the rear ofthe engine compartment, and separate thetwo as far as possible.25 Pull the steering column assembly from its20.29 Steering rack-to-columnengagementA Steering rack pinion splined shaftB Annular groove to ensure correct locationof pinch-boltC Pinch-boltD Lower steering shaft universal jointbulkhead location and withdraw it from thevehicle, ensuring that the lower steering shaftuniversal joint and the steering rack pinionsplined shaft separate fully. Ensure that thesteering shaft bulkhead seal seats correctly inits location.27 With the column assembly located looselyin position, refit the nuts securing it to itsmounting bracket, taking care to ensure thatthe lower column tube support bush seatscorrectly as the nuts are tightened to thespecified torque.28 Refit the steering column ancillarycomponents, reversing the removal proceduregiven in paragraphs 2 to 7 (for models withoutair bag) or 12 to 22 (for models with air bag).29 Tighten the pinch-bolt securing the lowersteering shaft universal joint to the pinionsplined shaft to the specified torque. Ensurethat the pinch-bolt sits in the annular grooveon the pinion splined shaft (see illustration).30 Reconnect the battery negative lead.21 Steering column (powersteering) -removal and refitting3RemovalWarning: Handle the air bagwith extreme care as aprecaution against personalinjury, and always hold it withthe cover facing away from your body.
