Suspension <strong>and</strong> steering 10•1319.12 Undo the screw (arrowed) <strong>and</strong>withdraw the Passive Anti-Theft System(PATS) transceiver from the ignitionswitch/steering lock barrel8 Turn the steering wheel as necessary sothat one of the air bag module retaining boltsbecomes accessible from the rear of thesteering wheel. Undo the bolt, then turnthe steering wheel again until the second boltis accessible. Undo this bolt also.9 Withdraw the air bag module from thesteering wheel far enough to access thewiring multi-plug. Some force may be neededto free the module from the additional steeringwheel spoke retainers.10 Disconnect the multi-plug from the rear ofthe module, <strong>and</strong> remove the module from thevehicle.Warning: Position the air bagmodule in a safe place, with themechanism facing downwardsas a precaution againstaccidental operation.11 Release the wiring harness from the sideof the steering column <strong>and</strong> disconnect the airbag module wiring multi-plug (yellow lead).12 Where applicable, undo the single screw<strong>and</strong> withdraw the Passive Anti-Theft System(PATS) transceiver from the ignitionswitch/steering lock barrel (see illustration).13 Turn the steering wheel so that theroadwheels are in the straight-ahead position,then remove the ignition key to lock thesteering.14 Unscrew the retaining bolt from the centreof the steering wheel, then insert the ignition20.2 Manual choke control knob <strong>and</strong> itslocating lug (arrowed)key <strong>and</strong> turn it to position “I”. Grip the steeringwheel each side, then pull <strong>and</strong> withdraw itfrom the column shaft.RefittingAll models15 Refit in the reverse order of removal.Make sure that the wheel is centralised, asnoted on removal <strong>and</strong> turn the ignition key sothat it is in position “I” (steering unlocked).Tighten the retaining bolt to the specifiedtorque setting.20 Steering column (manualsteering) -3removal <strong>and</strong> refittingRemovalModels without air bag1 Disconnect the battery negative (earth) lead(refer to <strong>Chapter</strong> 5A, Section 1).2 Remove the manual choke control knob,where fitted, by depressing the lug securing it,<strong>and</strong> pulling it from its shaft (see illustration).The lug is found on the side of the controlknob shank.3 Remove the lower steering column shroudby undoing its four retaining screws, thendetach the choke warning light switch/pullcontrol assembly from the lower shroud byunscrewing its retaining collar (bayonet-type20.3 Removing the manual choke controlassembly retaining collarfixing), using a suitable tool to locate in thecollar recesses (see illustration).4 Remove the two screws securing the uppersteering column shroud from above, <strong>and</strong> thetwo screws securing it from below, the latteraccessible only with the lower shroudremoved.5 Disconnect the wiring multi-plugs from thesteering column multi-function switchassembly, then remove the single screwsecuring the multi-function switch assemblyto the steering column lock housing. Thisretaining screw is located directly forward ofthe hazard warning light switch (seeillustration). Remove the multi-functionswitch assembly.6 Disconnect the ignition switch wiring multiplugconnector <strong>and</strong> remove the loom platefrom its location on the left-h<strong>and</strong> side of thesteering column (see illustration).7 Unclip the bonnet release cable abutmentfrom its location in the steering column lockhousing, then detach the cable from thebonnet release lever by aligning the cablecore with the slot on the release lever <strong>and</strong>withdrawing it through that slot.
