Chapter 3Flame <strong>Detection</strong> inInfra-red (IR) VideoIn this chapter, a novel method to detect flames in infra-red (IR) video is described.The chapter begins with the previous work in the literature related withIR video based fire detection. IR cameras produce a single channel video andflames and other hot objects appear as bright objects. Therefore, color informationin regular video cannot be used. However, brightness information is animportant clue for fire detection. In the subsequent sections, the proposed flamedetection method in IR video is presented. The method essentially consists ofspatial analysis of flame regions in wavelet domain, and temporal modeling offlame pixels using hidden Markov models (HMMs). In Section 3.2.1, the spatialimage analysis and feature extraction method based on wavelet analysis is described.In Section 3.2.2, temporal video analysis and HMM based modeling ofthe flicker process is presented. Simulation examples are presented in Section 4.3.3.1 Previous WorkCurrent fire and flame detection algorithms in regular video [64], [17], [84], [87]use color information in video.
