Chapter 7Conclusion and Future WorkFire detection systems are vital in saving people’s lives, and preventing hazardsbefore they get out of control. Particle based detectors are commonly used insuch systems. These sensors are sensitive to produced during fire. An alarmis issued only if these chemicals physically reach the sensor and their presenceis detected by either ionization or photometry. This requirement makes thesesensors dependent on the distance to fireplace as well as their location. Besides, these sensors cannot be used outdoors. Image and video based systems can bean alternative to particle sensors for fire detection. In this thesis, we developed novel signal and image analysis techniques for automaticfire detection using cameras and infra-red sensors. Fire detection problemcan be also viewed as a problem of recognition of a specific dynamic texture typein video. Dynamic texture and flame and smoke behavior can be modeled usingstochastic methods. In this thesis, we used Markov models which are tailored forflame and smoke detection. We developed specific methods for flame, smoke andwildfire smoke which have various spatio-temporal characteristics. We developed dedicated methods for various aspects of fire using differenttypes of sensors. We explicitly developed real-time methods for- short-range (< 30m) flame detection in visible range video,106
