THE COOLESTStory & Photos by Eric EvansPLACE ON EARTH[Eric Evans and his wife, Tessa, and their ’97 Defender 90 SW, livein Naples, FL. The owner of a commercial landscape company,Eric entertained RN News readers when he bought his ex-MOD109” from Rovers North and drove it to Florida. We’ve read of hisexplorations of Big Bend, TX, and his 45-day trip to Alaska, too. Here’s his account of a fall ’07 trip to Iceland –ed.]In describing “The Happiest Places on Earth,” Eric Weiner noted that“Iceland is cold and dark for much of the year. It is isolated and, forgoodness sakes, has the word ‘ice’ in its name. Not much happy aboutthat yet these descendants of the Vikings are, statistically, among theplanet’s happiest people.” What a challenge –we had to find out whyfor ourselves. The internet provided a lot of information about touring Icelandby Land Rover but I also received significant help from BruceElfstrom at Overland Experts. He operates off-road tours all over theworld and has done Iceland countless times. Of particular help werehis comments and warnings about the famed F910 Route from AskjaVolcano to Nyidalur in the interior, which was to be the highlight ofour trip.By combining travel insights from experienced expeditioners, like Bruce Elfstrom of Overland Experts, I finally produced a routemap that would allow for stops at all of the locations and activitiesmy wife Tessa and I were most interested in. More importantly – itprovided maximum time off-road in the Defender 110!While boarding our outbound flight from Boston’s LoganAirport, I suddenly found myself not only excited, but worried to theextent that I almost did not want to go. Will Tessa enjoy her firstoff-road experience? My thoughts quickly changed to food and anIcelandic beer as the in-flight service began. Our first taste ofIcelandic food went from “this is good” to “I’m done!” in a matter ofmilliseconds when the flight attendant announced we were eatingreindeer balls (I hoped they were referring to the shape of thesebit-sized treats!) After our late evening arrival at Keflavik Airport, wewere whisked away via shuttle bus to our hotel in ReykjavikOur only agenda for this first day, and a highlight of the trip, wasour visit to the famed Blue Lagoon. Unlike so many of Iceland’swonders, this one is not natural. It’s actually a hot spring pool formedby the run off from a geothermal power plant that supplies themajority of Reykjavik’s heat and hot water.I woke the next morning obsessed with the realization that Iwould be behind the wheel of a Defender 110 TD5 of my very own(at least for a week or so). We made our way out of town and withinthe first 20 minutes, we had spotted active steam vents on theroadside. Our first stop was at Geyser – the one all others in the worldare named for. This was a new experience for us both and despite thetouristy feel of the buses in the parking lot, it was everything we hadhoped for in our first of Iceland’s wonders. We then drove to Gulfoss, another of Iceland’s treasures. At the parking area, we met some fellow Roverphiles from Italywho gave us the low-down on the road ahead, including theirexperience with the F910! Further down the road, we took a detourto bring the Land Rover up close and personal with our first Glacier(Langjokull. Along the way, more hot springs, steam vents andthousands of free roaming sheep! It was nearly 11pm, dark andraining hard when we arrived at Osar. There our very gracious host(and Iceland Land Rover Club member) welcomed us in for a wellneeded night’s rest.Akureyri sits at the base of Eyjafjorur fjord and is Iceland’ssecond largest city with a population of 16,000 people. It’s a smallerversion of Reykjavik. We checked in at our hostel and climbed backin the Defender to fill out the day with some sightseeing to the east.Godafoss waterfall, located halfway between Akureyri and LakeMyvatn, was picture perfect and provided a backdrop for our new tripmascot Leif (a stuffed puffin).Lake Myvatn comprises one of the most active volcano areas inIceland (another major eruption is expected at any time). Signs warnyou to stay on the walking path in order to avoid being boiled aliveshould the ground give way to the geothermal forces just below thesurface! It’s truly amazing and a bit unnerving that at any moment thewhole place could blow up around you. We chose to explore theDimmuborgir, the 2,000 year old remains of a lava flow filled withpillars, caves and arches. Afterwards, we traveled off road to the18

nearby Hverfell crater. Looking for a challenge, I decided to make anascent to the top. The steep trail leading straight up the side was trickyand I was exhausted by the time I reached the top. The sulphurlay thick in the air and the wind howled loudly; it was an eerieexperience.Tessa and I arrived on a farm outside of Husavik for a ride onIcelandic horses, small, stout, sure-footed and very clever. Thesehorses are so revered by Icelanders that if one ever leaves thecountry, it is never allowed to return out of fear of weakening thebreed. Our ride included a run down along the black sand beach. Aswe made our way down the cliffs, we attracted the attention of a groupof a couple of dozen other grazing horses. They were apparentlyinterested in us, or our horses, because they suddenly all began tochase us down the beach!Pushing further toward the northeast, we made it to Kopasker, asmall fishing town of only 184 people, and our stop for the night. Thisis the least visited area of Iceland. Though not nearly as isolated bydistance, the landscape reminded me of my trip up the DaltonHighway to Prudhoe Bay Alaska. We reached our destination at thefurthest point North in Iceland, the Hraunhafnartangi lighthouse. It sits just ½ mile south of the Artic Circle.Returning to the South, we entered Jokulsargljufur NationalPark, home to Dettifoss (Europe’s most powerful waterfall). Thetrack down the west side of the park was quite fun, but rivercrossings could definitely be hazardous during the spring andsummer melt-off. Several we crossed would have been well above thewindscreen of the Defender! As you approach Dettifoss, all vegetationsuddenly disappears, leaving only volcanic rock and sand. It is likebeing on the surface of the moon. In fact, NASA astronauts trainedhere prior to their lunar expeditions. So I guess you could say I’vedriven a Lunar Rover! The final leg of the day’s journey was to get to our farmhouseaccommodations in the Central Highlands, several hours of off-roaddriving to the east of Askja Volcano and the start of our F910 routejourney. After a great breakfast the next morning, we were on our way.The route west to the Askja area became increasingly barren and thecoloration of the environment changed drastically and frequently.Climbing the track toward Askja, we finally arrive at a Rangers Hut,and his very cool Defender 130 with monster tires and all thenecessary gear. To the right the track leads through the Dyngjufjollmassif – an enormous and very recent looking lava flow field. At thetop, we dismount and start our long hike to the crater. The weather is quite nice as we start our roughly one mile hikefrom the parking area to the 715 foot deep (deepest in Iceland) lakeof Oskjuvatn. The landscape felt moon-like; I felt as though I shouldbe wearing a space suit. As we neared the lake, we encountered Viti19

Crater (Hell in Icelandic) and its steaming blue water. As I looked fora way to negotiate a path down to take a warm dip the weatherchanged - seemingly in an instant. Determined to get into Viti, Imoved forward down the gully leading to the bottom. Just as I thoughtto myself “damn – forgot my hiking boots,” it happened. I hit a patchof thick peanut buttery mud and lost my footing. Down I went, slidingmaybe 30 feet before I could stop myself. As I fell, I was unable tobrace myself with my hands because I had our video camera strappedin my right hand and was holding my hat on my head with my left. Thepainful result was a dislocated right shoulder and a short video clipof the camera striking the ground with audio of the expletives thatcame out of my mouth. We turned back – head on into wind, freezing rain and at onepoint snow. I have never been so cold. I gave Tessa my hat and wespent close to ½ hour making our way back to the Land Rover –the entire time staring at the ground because the wind was so cold onour faces. Safely back in the truck and in pain from the dislocatedshoulder, we drove back down the lava flows to check in with theRanger. He said he had not traveled the F910 in more than a week, but as long as the rivers were not too deep we should be ok.The F910 is widely regarded as the most hardcore off road routein Iceland, particularly if you take the more southern “old-road,”which is no longer “maintained.” Not really sure what they meant by“maintained” as there is no road, no trail. Perhaps what it means isthat they no longer replace the plastic guidance poles located every300 feet or so – sort of like channel markers for a boat. Anyway, theofficial route is just over 72 miles long. It crosses open desert, lavaflows, rivers (no bridges), kisses the Vatnajokull Glacier and evenclimbs over and down a boulder strewn 2,000’ mountain beforedescending west from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge into the valley headingsouth toward Reykjavik. The first section after leaving the Askja area is really quite cool, provided you keep up your speed and keep moving. It’s a long stretchof open, black sand desert and we were running at about 35-40 mphin the Defender. After about 20 minutes or so, thick chunks of lavabegan to appear again and we were forced to navigate our waythrough them, while following our yellow poles. Progressively, thelava got larger and the spaces between got smaller. Eventually, wefound ourselves picking and choosing “lines” across the lava chunksranging in size from a speed bump to a VW Beetle and taking fulladvantage of the D110’s articulation capability. My cheeks still hurtfrom all the smiling I did in this section, despite the excruciating painin my right shoulder at every shift of the transmission. The next section we entered was the wash out plain from an oldglaciated volcano that seemed to go on for miles. Our first crossing(we had to cross in two places) of this “river” was nearly ¾ of a mile20

wide. Fortunately, because of the time of year and to some extent thetime of day, the water in this crossing stayed below the hubs. The trickwas that the navigation poles did not exist in the river. We were luckyto spot one on a ridge as we came out of our second crossing so wecould continue. As we made our way up from the wash out plain, we encounteredthe massive Trolladyngja and the beginning of snow. Trolladyngja isthe greatest shield volcano in Iceland and its lava flows are thought tohave run all the way to the north coast near Akureyri (about 75miles). For the Land Rover, at 2,000 feet above the surrounding area, this was a giant pile of gravel to be conquered. Boulders ranged insize from apple to small car and were all aiming for the sidewalls onthe Defenders tires. Not surprisingly, we were worse off than the LandRover at the end of it.As the snow continued to come down even harder, we found itincreasingly difficult to keep our eyes on the poles. We had broughtour GPS, but it could not keep a signal unless the windscreen wasfacing south. At one point, nearing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge we losttrack of the poles completely and had to turn back. The elevationchanges are constant, rivers and streams seem to go in everydirection and just about any direction you look in; looks like it couldbe the route. At one point, having not seen a navigation pole for quitea while, I determined that the only safe route was to keep theVatnajokull Glacier close by and on my left, which meant we would becontinuing in a Southwesterly direction. Finally, Tessa spotted anavigation pole in the distance and we were back on track.Along the base of Mount Kistufell, we pass one of the emergencyhuts located in the interior for people who lose their way. I washoping we would not have to use it. We climb and descend countlessridges and hills before finally arriving at the outpost of Nyidalur, thegeographic center of Iceland. The F26 heading south featured basicdirt and gravel with plenty of washboard surface. In fact, thewashboard was so bad at one point that the truck started goingsideways and I heard a distinct hissing sounds coming from the backof the truck. A tire? No, a beer! 30+ miles of 6” washboard explodeda beer out of its can! No great loss, unless you are in Iceland wheregovernment controls alcohol sales and a six pack of tall boys costsnearly $30! So much for that “new car smell” too. As the miles ofwashboard dragged on, it became more apparent that we would notmake our destination. By 1:00am we were both exhausted and readyto call it a night at the Highland Motel. We hit the sack and enjoyed awell needed rest.Over the next two days, we traveled east along the Ring Road toHofn at Iceland’s southeastern most point making stops along theway. We visited Jokulsarlon Iceberg Lagoon, which was very cool, although a bit touristy. It is an inland bay located directly between theVatnajokull Glacier and the Atlantic Ocean. They have amphibiousvehicles that take you out into the bay to view the icebergs and theseals. As we headed back toward Reykjavik, we had one last challengein front of us. Thorsmork is “Thor’s Forest” – even though thereare no trees. Not only has it been recognized as one of the mostintriguing places on earth, its also one hell of an off-road challenge!Three Glaciers, mountains and two deep rivers surround the “forest.”The route requires the fording the Krossa River dozens of times. The Krossa is cold, fast moving and deep. To add to the level ofexcitement, the river bottom is made up almost entirely of loose rocksand sand! Water levels can change dramatically throughout the day. Ifound myself more nervous than at the start of the F910 route.Fortunately, we convoyed with a group from Scotland in a D110.Keeping in mind Bruce’s instructions on proper river fordingtechnique, I entered the first deep crossing. There is no adjective todescribe the feeling of the rear end of a Land Rover floating downstream as you attempt to push on and keep moving forward. It waslike driving on marbles.Heading back to Reykjavik for a couple of days of excellentmeals, a few shots of “Black Death” liquor and a 4-star hotel, Tessaand I decided we also deserved another trip to the Blue Lagoon. So we headed off the paved road one last time on a shortcut to anafternoon of soaking and relaxation. Tessa and I hope to visit thisamazing place again someday and we highly recommend it to anyonelooking for adventure and the trip of a lifetime._______ ________21

First ImpressionsThe All New 1967 Land Rover 109”Story & Photos by Jeremy Bergeron[Jeremy Bergeron, Colorado Springs, CO grew up in Texas. He’s anarchitect with The Larson Group in Colorado Springs. While heloves his wife, Jenny, and his two children Ethan and Ashley, missing from his life was a Series Land Rover. Here’s his story asto how he found one –ed]Our friends thought I must have made a partner in the firm when wedrove up in our new Land Rover (pronounced with a snobbishEnglish accent). A year earlier, Jenny and I had just moved to Denver,Colorado as newlyweds from Austin, Texas. Every chance we had,we explored the Colorado landscape. We soon realized that ouradventuresome life was hampered by the lack of ground clearanceand front wheel drive on our Volkswagen. Shamelessly, I sensed anexcuse for an SUV.We looked at a ton of SUV’s. I was bored by most, moved bynone. That is, until I test drove a Land Rover Discovery. I always likedthe look of the Discovery from afar, but always assumed that theywere expensive and unobtainable at my stage in life. I was wrong onone of those assumptions. We traded in our beloved Volkswagen for a 1996 Land RoverDiscovery SE7 from a small used car dealership up in Boulder, CO.Of course, I was smitten with the Land Rover D90 parked next to ourDiscovery on the dealer lot, but I just couldn’t convince Jenny or thebank to go for the 3 times the Discovery price the dealer was wantingfor it. One can dream, right? The Land Rover drew lots of admirationfrom friends. I failed to mention to them that I could buy two of theseDiscovery’s for the price of one of our friend’s cars. Don’t tellanyone, it’s our little secret.30

Land Rovers, “As Seen n TV”, were part of my life. I rememberlaughing hysterically with friends while watching the Series Rover on“The Gods Must Be Crazy,” and sobbing while watching “Born Free.”I loved the stories that involved Land Rovers. I thought of a photo ofsome old Series Land Rovers sinking into the ground as they satdecaying on an old farm in England. The pictures were beautiful withthe imagery of the old Rovers returning to the earth. In my mind, theold Series Land Rovers are kind of like that; they don’t die, they justslowly return to the earth. I wonder what stories those Land Roverscould tell. Did they carry royalty? Did they rescue some lion cubs?Or did they just haul manure? The stories are what drew me in to the Land Rover world. To me,Land Rovers are purposeful, they look the part, and they areextremely capable taking part in that purpose. I love reading theadventures of folks taking treks around the world in their Discoveryor Defenders. I love the community and camaraderie of fellow LandRover enthusiasts, both in person and the online communities foundin various Land Rover forums.Eventually, the Discovery was just not enough to feed my LandRover addiction. I started to get that funny feeling deep inside that Ineeded to go to the source of that addiction and decided Iwanted... scratch that, I needed to find a Land Rover Series. Thusbegan my search for a Series. In the spring of 2007, I had a tax refund burning a hole in mypocket. Jenny supported my search but she corralled her enthusiasm.I looked locally in Colorado. I searched CraigsList nationally.I searched the Land Rover forum “for sale” sections. I watched thebids on eBay. I found nothing. I was looking for a Series that was indaily driver condition, and soon realized that my “large tax refund”was not as large as I had originally thought.I started to see more and more about importing a Series fromEngland. Wow! The prices I was being quoted for a Series includingshipping to the United States was ridiculously lower than anything Ihad seen stateside. I was game! I found a nice looking 1975 LandRover Series III 109 Station Wagon with the 2.25L diesel. Can anybodysay Biodiesel? Maybe even run it on vegetable oil? Yes! I could startmaking my own fuel with old frying oil from the local Chinesefood take-out restaurant. I would become the envy of allenvironmentalists as I putted around town hauling my recycling to therecycle center with only the smell of french fries in my wake.I was excited!I convinced my dad that we could fly to Jacksonville, FL, pick thistruck up at the dock and drive it all the way home to Colorado Springsfresh off the boat. It would be a great father and son bonding time aswe traversed half the country in a 30+ year old truck that has neverseen American soil.Who was I kidding? I looked into having the truck transportedfrom Jacksonville to Colorado Springs, which actually would becheaper than flying and driving back, but where is the adventure inthat? Where was the story? I wanted to be able to tell the story ofthe time my dad and I drove an old Land Rover Series across thecountry. Ultimately, too many details and too many unknowns tookthe fun out of this scheme.Thinking more about the quest for a Series vehicle, I realizedthat I was looking for a daily driver, when in fact, I needed to find aSeries project. The story and adventure I was looking for could befound in the project itself. I never knew my grandfather, but he andmy father restored old Model T’s and Model A’s back in the 1950’sand 60’s. One first project was the restoration of a rust bucket ModelA into a functional car. Like so many others, my dad traded theproduct of his story in on a 1962 Ford Falcon. It has now become astory ending with regret. So I wondered about a “project” 1965 Series IIA 88” advertisedin Colorado Springs. The seller said “all the pieces are there”. I wentout to his 5 acre horse property and, sure enough, there in the openbarn were lots of pieces. I don’t doubt that all the pieces were there, but there were actually 3 or 4 Series trucks scattered around thebarn. This would have been way too much project for a first timeSeries owner.31

32I eventually found my way to theRovers North forums, where I did a searchthrough the “for sale” section with a simple“Colorado” keyword search. There, Ifound a very simple ad for a 1967 LandRover Series IIA 109”, with a 6-cylinder,located 2.5 hours away in Alamosa, CO.The listing was a few months old by then, with no pictures and an asking price was$5,000. I contacted the seller by emailand Dan (name changed to protect theinnocent) responded telling me the truckwas still available and that he was now inO.B.O. mode.He sent me some photos of the truckbut it was hard to tell much from them.Dan really wanted me to come take a lookat the truck in person. I got the sense thathe wasn’t finding many potential buyerswilling to visit a “project” in a relativelyremote area of Colorado. I took theinformation that was given to me andposted it on a few different Land Roverforums to get some feedback and arecommendation for the “OBO” amount.Based on the photos posted, forum posterssuggested $1,500. I called Dan and toldhim I could offer no more than $1,500. Heagreed we should meet. Sweet! Time for aroad trip.

I have this idyllic idea of my dad and me bonding while turningwrenches on an old Land Rover project. However, my dad said hewas done working on cars in his lifetime. He has moved on to flyfishing. I hate fishing- never mind that I haven’t tried it! I called mydad up to see if he would like to take a road trip the followingSaturday down to Alamosa. I did not tell him the purpose of the tripbut he guessed easily. After a sleepless Friday night, my dad and I left on a gorgeous fallmorning, perfect weather for a drive. We had some good shoulder toshoulder bonding time conversing about cars and life on our drivedown. I assured my dad that I was only going to look at the trucksince I brought no money with us.We met Dan at the truck, parked for 4 years in some tall grassalongside a metal building off the highway near Alamosa. Dan hadremoved all the extra Land Rover parts and pieces that were storedinside the truck and spread them across the ground around the truck. My first reaction was all smiles; the truck was beautiful to me.I crawled around every inch and was amazed at the lack of rust andthe general completeness of everything. However, there were a fewpair of underwear that appear to have been used as oil rags lyingaround the truck; one hopes it was oil. I noticed there were a fewitems on this Series IIA such as the heated windscreens and extrablack panels around the bulkhead that led me to think that maybe thiswas some kind up special model.Even my dad got caught up in the moment. After looking over thetruck we prepared to say our goodbyes to Dan. My dad surprised meand offered $1,000 on my behalf which was countered to $1,250.Deal! One problem, we did not bring any money. We offered adeposit, but Dan would not accept and said a handshake was all heneeded. I just bought a 1967 Land Rover Series IIA 109” for $1,250on a handshake. We would come back down the next Saturday tohaul the Series back to Colorado Springs. The week between, I did some research to figure out why thisSeries truck seemed to have a few “extras” compared to others I hadseen. I found out that this Series was #329 of only 811 NADA (NorthAmerican Dollar Area) trucks ever produced. The NADA trucks havea slightly modified 6 cylinder Rover engine, and they were the last109” trucks ever produced and sold in the U.S. This Series left theSolihull factory in September 1966 heading to San Francisco. This allsounded pretty cool to me.Saturday could not come soon enough! My dad and I once againheaded down to Alamosa in the Discovery, this time to bring theSeries home. We rented a U-Haul trailer in Alamosa and met Dan anda buddy of his at the truck. The Rover had no brakes; we put thetransfer case in neutral and pushed it onto the trailer. After completing the deal, Dan tells me that a couple showed upat his house the night before offering $3,000 for the truck and had aflatbed trailer ready for the haul. He told them that he already had adeal. Dan honored his handshake even though somebody offeredhim more than double my purchase price. He did not even try to getmore money from me. He even saw to it that a spare 6 cylinder enginethat came with the truck found its way to my house. The drive home with the Discovery pulling the Series was slowand uneventful. My dad and I took many opportunities to make stopsand snap a few pictures along the way. We stopped at an old antiquestore in Fort Garland before heading up La Veta Pass (9,413 ft). Theowner of the store, a man in his 80’s, practically came running out tocheck out the old Series Rover. We slowly climbed up La Veta Pass. The Discovery did a decent job pulling on the highways, but once wewere in stop and go traffic with lights in Colorado Springs, theDiscovery felt tired. Hills started to feel more like mountains. We hadone last stop to make before getting home, the car wash. I thought itmight be wise to get rid of the years of dirt from the San Luis Valleyoff the truck. We finally arrived home! The Series has taken over the oilstained side of the garage from the Discovery. The poor Discovery isnow sitting out in the cold and snow. The Series looks kind of happyto be indoors for a change.Taking inventory of the truck, I have found only one dead mouse;no signs of Hantavirus yet! In the truck, I found a Xerox copy of thefront and back of an old February 1967 Four Wheeler Magazinewith an ad for the NADA 6 cylinder truck. Later, on Ebay, I found anactual copy of that issue. So now I have a road test of the “new” 109”to read.I have been told that I need to come up with a name first, soI am still working on that. Apparently everything was working andrunning when the truck was parked, which gives me great hope forits future. Just need some time to tinker. Friends have come overto see the new veddy-British Land Rover and most seem prettyexcited. The guys seem to understand the desire and excitement, butmost of the girls just roll their eyes. I love my wife! This is just the beginning of my episode of this Land Rover’sstory. It has a story spanning more than 40 years already. I would loveto have my dad come along side me in this project. Maybe after he isdone fishing! My kids, Ethan (4) and Ashley (2), may one day like todo more with the Series IIA than just jump from row to row. My hopeis that my family will be able to bond with this Rover adventure. I amintending not to spend too much time tinkering, and make sure myfamily comes first. Like most good stories, they get better with age. Ifeel like I am part of the new generation of Land Rover Seriesowners, the next guard, if you will, that will continue to enjoy andsafeguard the Land Rover heritage and continue the story._______ ________33

EMPLOYEE PROFILE:A LOOK AT ART LIMACHERWhat, where, and when was your first Land Roverexperience?I think my first "real" Land Rover experience was when I bought my109” ex-mod pickup. That is when I really got into Land Rover"ownership.” It was my everyday vehicle, come rain, sleet, snow, orsunny days; although, I didn't do too much off-roading with it exceptfor the drive to Rover North on these lovely Westford dirt roads. I amsure that with the ex-ambulance’s heavy-duty suspension, I alwayshad at least one wheel off the ground at any given time, whichthankfully disappeared once I installed our parabolic springs. What was your longest trip in a Land Rover and didanything unusual happen?ANY trip in a Series Land Rover seems like a "long" trip. Ha! My"longest" trip was when my two brothers-in-law and I piled into hishard top 88" and went to the Down East Rally at the Museum ofTransportation in Maine. Ahhhh, good times.Where did you grow up?I grew up in Bangor, Maine, where I lived until the 6th grade, then Imoved to Williston, Vermont, through high school, and thenBurlington, Vermont. What positions have you held at Rovers North? When did you begin working here full time?I started working at Rovers North full time in November of 1987,picking and packing parts in the warehouse for 7 or 8 years. I wasthen promoted to "Shipping Manager" for a couple of years andbefore long I moved into phone sales and tech support for 9 + years.Subsequently, I moved to Texas for two years and worked for ZachCarter in the Land Rover Dallas Parts Department but missed friendsand family so we decided to move back to the unforgiving cold ofVermont to be with them. Mark and Andrea were gracious enough tore-hire me back here at Rovers North. How would you describe what you do atRovers North today?I still participate in some phone sales and technical support, but mycurrent focus is increasing our commercial accounts and letting themknow that we are here to support them. Whether it’s the DECSuperscan II diagnostic tool or our quality, competitively pricedGenuine or Pro Line parts, we can supply anything they may need forany Land Rover product they may be working on. We offer kits tostreamline installation where it makes sense, so you get everything todo the job in one package. Some examples of this are: our BrakeKits, Bushing Kits, CV Joint Kits, and Coil Conversion Kits. After considerable development, we’re proud to offer our ownaftermarket ProLine brand of parts. Some features of this line are:new ProLine brake calipers with no core charge, brake pads androtors, air springs, radiators, water pumps, expansion tanks, andpropshafts. What got you interested in Land Rovers?I got interested in Land Rovers after I began working at Rovers North.I believe I was here for 3 or 4 years when I bought my Series III 88”and did some repairs to the chassis and bulkhead, then I painted itand sold it.What Land Rovers have you owned?First, I had a 1973 Series III 88", followed by a 1969 Series IIA"Bugeye" 88" on which I replaced the chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension, wire harness, etc. but sold it before I even got a chanceto drive it! My last Land Rover was a 1971 Series IIA 109" ex-modpickup with a full canvas, which isn't the warmest vehicle to bedriving through the below zero temps of a Vermont winter. Once Iinstalled parabolic springs, I was so amazed by the smooth ride thatI forgot about how cold I was!Which one of them was your favorite and why?Absolutely, the 109" ex-mod! Actually, it was the only vehicle that Idrove for a couple years and I grew to love the uncertainty of if, orwhen, I was going to reach my destinations. What activities do you do when you're not atRovers North?I enjoy spending time with friends and family, guitars, motorcycles, tattoos, and piercings. How have Land Rovers influenced your life?Well, with 20 years of Land Rover parts experience under my belt,Land Rovers have been a part of my life for almost half of myexistence!_______ ________41

Rovers NorthAbsorbs RemainingLRCP Inventory:Story by: Mike KochPhoto by Gordon Kallio46

The first successful winter ascent of Mt. Washington in wheeledvehicles. February 1st 1994. Made by Rovers North Off-road,using Range Rover Classic vehicles.Rovers North using Range Rover Classics to climb Mt. WashingtonLand Rover Classic Parts (LRCP), a new name and a new brand, wasintroduced in late 2004 as a Land Rover business that purchased, warehoused, distributed and marketed Land Rover Genuine parts atreasonable prices specifically for Range Rover Classic (1970-1995)and Discovery Series 1 (1989-1994). LRCP encompassed roughly10,000 parts numbers, all of which were Genuine, living up to therecognized and trusted Land Rover image of quality parts. Parts thatexclusively fit vehicles covered under the LRCP umbrella were movedfrom Land Rover’s main UK warehouse, to make room for newinventory, to a special LRCP warehouse. Parts that fit vehicles coveredboth under LRCP and Land Rover remained in the mainstream LandRover parts program. At the time of LRCP’s inception, Land Roverrecognized the strong parts demand for its well-engineered, durableRange Rover Classic and Discovery and their loyal, enthusiasticowners. Land Rover hoped to develop a wider customer base fordealers by increasing product range and variety via a strategic andtactical marketing campaign. A web-based ordering system wasestablished specifically for LRCP that was similar to the dealer’sexisting system, yet was completely autonomous and included its veryown CD-ROM parts catalogs. The new logistics structure meant thatLand Rover retailers who did not register for the program could onlybuy Classic Parts through authorized LRCP distributors. Another goalof LRCP was to review products that were no longer available andresource parts that were economically viable. It was natural for LandRover to entrust Rovers North with the first LRCP account in NorthAmerica in 2005.At the end of 2007 Land Rover decided to absorb 325 fastmoving parts back into its main UK warehouse. Unexpectedly, LandRover then ordered the rest of the Classic inventory to be scrapped. The news that thousands of Classic parts were about to be destroyedprompted negotiations between Land Rover Classic Parts and theirlargest customer, Rovers North, to rescue as much NAS inventory aspossible. Rovers North’s Parts Manager, Dirk Parkins, and his teamsuccessfully rescued a large portion of the remaining NAS inventoryand arranged shipment to Rovers North, where it is now safelywarehoused.Rovers North is proud to continue in the tradition of LRCP’ssupport for enthusiasts by providing quality parts at reasonable pricesfor Range Rover Classic and Discovery Series I, whether it’s formaintenance, off-road, or restoration._______ ________Mt. A Series III RunsWith the DeereStory & Photos by Bob Rusnak[Bob Rusnak, Morrisonville, NY, is a mechanical engineer whoadores “old equipment” – his John Deere and InternationalHarvester tractors. To further enjoy his trout fishing and deerhunting, he convinced his wife they needed a ’73 Series III HT.Here’s how he got one –ed.]It all started about 8 years ago. I was looking for an older fourwheel drive vehicle at the time. I had owned a number of four wheeldrive vehicles in the past including a Willys Jeep, original styleBronco, Jeep Wagoneer, and International Scout. I knew very littleabout Land Rovers. I was at a reunion party for my wife’s college andgot talking to one of the men there about Series Land Rovers. He wasin the process of restoring one. We talked for some time on his LandRover and how they were built, aluminum bodies, parts availabilityand so on. I was intrigued and added a Series Land Rover to my list48

of possible vehicles along with a Willys Jeep and International Scout...A few months later, I got a call from my brother-in-law whoseparents were from England. He told me about a Series III Land Roverthat was for sale in my area that he had seen on the Land RoverExchange. I went and looked at the vehicle and decided to buy it.I had driven the vehicle for total of about 10 miles when I pulledit into the garage to look into a coolant leak. I determined that theleak was coming from the gasket on the bottom of the thermostathousing.Having heard of Rovers North, I gave them a call and placed myfirst order for a thermostat, gaskets, and bolts. I had no idea at thistime that this would be the first of many many calls to order parts. The parts showed up the next evening, so I went out to the garage toinstall the parts. I opened the door to the garage and smelled gas.The gas was coming from the tank area and there was a small stainon the floor where it had leaked. While I was under the Rover to lookfor the gas leak, I started poking around to see the condition of thevehicle underneath. After scraping away some crud and doing a littlecleaning, I saw that the frame of the vehicle was not in as good shapeas I first thought. There was some substantial rot around the frontspring shackle area, just behind the front horns, and the outriggers. At this point, I decided that I had to do something about theframe problems. My first thought was to clear the body panels fromthe area and hire someone to do some weld repairs to the frame. Ona parallel path, I started looking into the cost for a replacementframe. I found a new frame for sale online that was not too far awayand about the price of what I would have expected to pay someone todo welding repairs to the frame. Not having much experience withwelding, I decided to go with the new frame. I could do this workmyself and the end product would be better. What a can of wormsthis decision opened up.Well, to replace a frame everything must come off! I started mydisassembly of the vehicle. As I got along on the disassembly, Irealized that I needed to make a decision on what standard I wantedto work toward. Every part I took off needed some level of attention.I decided that I would strive for a rust free, clean vehicle with all partsfunctional. For the 10 miles I had driven the vehicle, it drove wellwithout any engine or gearbox problems that I was aware of. I wouldlimit my work on these to a thorough cleaning, new seals and theauxiliary equipment including the clutch slave, starter, alternator, carb, replacing intake manifold (cracked), and fuel pump. I pulledoff the body parts and found a number of areas that would need to beaddressed to live up to the standard I was striving for. The tub hadsome bad galvanic corrosion where the steel supports contacted thealuminum, the radiator panel had rot along the bottom and thebulkhead had corrosion problems at the bottom of the pillars.Besides these items, everything needed a good cleaning, disassembleand inspection.I spent the first winter disassembling the vehicle. Most of thiswent along without many unexpected problems. A good set of breakbar extenders (pipe), a good sized persuader (large ball peenhammer), and some PB Blaster were all necessary. In hind sight, ahot wrench and a grinder with a cutoff wheel would have also been abig help. There is something to say about how oil leaks preserveparts. Anywhere there was any oil leaking, things came apart great.By the time spring came along, I had the entire vehicle apart and thenew frame sitting on jacks in the garage. It was at about this time thatmy wife said that the Rover reminded her of the Scarecrow on theWizard of Oz. “They took a part off and threw it over there, tookanother part and threw it over there. “Ha-ha”, I said ruefully. I hadLand Rover parts everywhere - side yard, back yard, and all over thegarage and basement.Every part that was removed – and that was every part -got thesame treatment. They were cleaned, disassembled, inspected, wornparts replaced and all seals replaced before reassembly. I can’tventure a guess on the number of hours spent cleaning and rehabbingall the parts. The first parts installed were the springs and axles. This was amilestone in the project. I was actually putting something back on thevehicle. This was followed by a nice clean engine and gearbox.I installed them with rehabbed motor mounts and new gearboxmounts, yet something looked askew. Thank goodness I have beenobsessed with taking photos of every step and documenting everymoment of the disassembly. After some head scratching and somemeasurements, it appeared like I had reversed the gearbox mounts.I jacked the engine/gearbox up and switched the mounts andeverything fell into place. With the body parts out of the way, I next took care of the itemsthat mounted on the frame: fuel tank, fuel line from tank to pump, exhaust, speedometer cable and emergency brake parts. The tanklooked good so I plugged the openings with tape and applied a littleair pressure to the tank with my shop vac to check for leaks.I sprayed all the seams with soapy water and could not find a leakanywhere. I installed the tank and would address a leak if there wasone later. I thought it must have been one of the seals or a fuel linethat was leaking.49

The bulkhead was not up to my standard. I had been shoppingaround for someone to repair mine or a good replacement. On theinternet, I found a bulkhead that was advertised as perfect and rustfree. I called the seller and purchased the part. After a lot of anxietyand a long delay, the bulkhead was finally received. It was not what Iwould have called perfect but it was rust free. Another reason I wentwith this bulkhead was that the seller told me it included the dashparts and that they were in good condition (my lower dash panel wasrough where the hole for the heater is located). On went the bulkhead next along with the steering box/column,brake booster/master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, heater boxme and made some repairs. The sand blasting was too aggressive andit deformed the sheet aluminum. Prior to installing the tub I cleaned, repaired, primed and painted all the inside surfaces. This was doneto all the body parts before installation. The new tub required somenew mounting holes to mount to the tabs on the frame. The radiatorand restored breakfast were installed, along with the hoses and pipesto the engine and heater core. Now on a roll, I installed the seat base, floors, tunnel cover, and cowling. The windscreen and top installationrequired some shimming and shifting to get the top to line up with thewindscreen. The doors, wings and bonnet came next.Next came the big moment - starting the engine. I topped off alland blower. The steering box/column and bulkhead were left looseat this time. With these parts in place, I ran all new brake and clutchlines and hoses. I also installed all the engine auxiliaries at this time.As part of the brake work, I put in all new wheel cylinders, brakesprings, and pads.Next came the dash components, along with completing thewiring from the instrument panel to the engine harness, rear harness, stop switch, fuel sender, reverse switch, oil pressure gauge. Now for the body parts: I replaced my tub with a Series II tub Ipurchased with no corrosion. Again, this tub was not quite as nice asI would have liked. The person I bought it from sand blasted it forthe fluids, primed the carburetor and turned the key. It startedsputtered and coughed and then stalled. I repeated the process a fewtimes but could not get the engine to idle. If I kept my foot on thethrottle, it would run, but the second I backed off, it would stall. Aftermany attempts to adjust the carb, I still could not get it to idle.I removed the carb and found an open port where there was asolenoid valve missing. I rebuilt the carb and plugged the open port. This corrected most of the idling problem. What a nice feeling to hearthe motor run!Now came the hardest part for me, the bodywork and paintingBecause of the sandblasting, the tub required filler work to make it50

look decent. As a rookie at this, it took forever to get the car ready forpaint. I finally got the Rover ready for priming and paint. I must saythat after working and working on the tub and some areas on thewings, my acceptable standard dropped off from what I originally wasshooting for. Given the parts I was working, with this was a goodcompromise. As part of the body work, I had primed all the parts. This was the only way to really see how well it would look.Paint day was next. I took the vehicle to a friend’s shop for thepainting. We sand blocked down the entire vehicle with pads and tackclothed it off. We got right to the painting. This all went well and whata transformation in the appearance of the vehicle!bulkhead to move the door on its hinges where it needs to go.It looks like I need to pull that side of the bulkhead forward a tad toget the correct alignment. This is also showing up with the top. It israked a little in the same direction.Reflecting back on this project brings back a lot of greatmemories. When I bought the vehicle, I had no intention of doing aframe-off restoration. I pulled it in the garage that day and keptremoving bolts until there were none left. Everything took way longerand cost twice as much as I anticipated. After just less than 5 yearsof time and over 180 parts purchased, I have pretty close to what Iwanted from the start, a clean, rust-free Series Land Rover.Since then, I have installed all new window tracks in the doortops, installed and tested all the lights, some of the trim parts, repaired some radiator hose leaks, and some general tidying up.There’s a longer list of “next steps”: install a new headliner that wasdamaged by mice, install the window tracks/glass in the backwindows, new door seals all around and remove the upper dash tomove the wiper drive so the passenger side wiper goes in the correctdirection.I still don’t have the body alignment totally correct. Thepassenger side door hits the windscreen mounting bolt just before itcloses all the way. There is not enough clearance between the tub andIf necessary, I would certainly do it again - it was a blast! I likethe no bells and whistles simplicity of this Rover. Now I can’t waituntil spring to put it on the road and start driving it! Living in the saltrich northern NY area, I’ll wait. Just as I sat thinking about whatstandard I wanted to restore the truck to when I started therestoration, I now sit here thinking how I want to use it._______ ________51

The required automobile inspection – anannual ritual in most states – invokes all thefear of your significant other telling you, “Weneed to talk.” When your Land Rover is 42years old, the mechanic can always findsomething to discuss. The requirements vary from state tostate, and even within states, but generallyspeaking, 19 states require inspection forsafety, and another 11 test for emissionslevels in certain regions. In Maine, the testingis for required accessories [wipers, lights, directional signals, horn] and for safety[brakes, rust holes in floors or sills, frontend, tire tread depth], and in onecounty, emission levels keyed to the date ofmanufacture. For Series Land Roversand early Range Rovers Maine offers anexemption; if you register your car as anantique [25 years or older], you need not getan annual inspection. However, the “antique”cannot be registered as your primary vehicle. So while the other ‘66 II-A, the QM I, can slipby as an antique, I go through the anguish ofthe annual inspection on the other II-A,the QE I.52BEHIND THESTEERING WHEELBy Jeffrey B. AronsonSince I’ve owned lots of Britishautomobiles for those same 42 years, you’dthink I’d have this inspection thing down, butno. First off, I seem to have all the inspectionstickers come due in December or January, hardly ideal times for effecting repairs on aLand Rover. Secondly, I spend the warmer, drier summer months cataloging all that Imust repair rather than actually fixinganything. Thirdly, I have this solemn beliefthat deteriorating electrical connections, frayingbrake linings and exhaust pipe corrosionwill all heal themselves in some miraculousmanner just before the inspection. Theydon’t, of course, which is why I was crawlingunderneath the Rover the day before theinspection, trying to get the emergency braketo really hold the car still. It required hours offiddling with grease encrusted bolts andadjusters, but I finally got the brake to hold –a bit. Then I checked every light, watched thewipers work, checked the exhaust, raised thecar on the high lift and shook the frontwheels, and listened to the horn. The day of reckoning came this morning.Naturally the left front directional signalednothing. Removing the amber cover from itsrubber seal revealed a pod of rust encasing abroken bulb. The bulb required needle-nosepliers to remove the broken casing but atleast the electrical connection remainedsound, and a new bulb did the trick. The steering systems passed muster, thedeteriorating exhaust pipe did not leak andthe car merited another year’s inspectionsticker.Shops and individuals who specialize inoff road and expedition requirements willinsist that no vehicle should venture out aloneor in a convoy unless every system is in goodshape, and that the time to assure thatcompetence is before the trip, not on it. As aNew Year’s resolution to myself, I’ve set uponmaintaining the systems on my vehicles toworking order before they wear out or rustaway. I’ll let my Rovers speak for my successor failure in my resolve._______ ________Richard Sammons is an architect in NewYork City who specializes in houses that donot look like glass pyramids or airlineterminals, but like, well, houses. Notsurprisingly, his car of choice is a MorganPlus 8. It’s his only car and he uses it daily. In a New York Times interview, he noted“This is my only car. I take it to constructionsites. You know what it’s like there.Dirt roads.”Sammons calmed his passenger, theauthor of the Times’ article. When steamseemed to escape from the hood at a trafficlight he insisted “It’s not overheating”pointing to the temperature gauge to provehis point. “Some antifreeze had leaked ontothe engine” (No surprise here; the MorganPlus 8 used the Rover V-8 familiar to LandRover owners). The story reminded me of the time that Isat in the QE I on the ferry that traverses the90 minute ride across Penobscot Bay to thisisland town. I had invited a frightenedpassenger, a neighbor, to join me in the LandRover instead of sliding around the slipperyplastic bench seats in the small cabin. By themiddle of the bay the seas pounded the shipand waves broke over the bow, and thensplashed over the top and hood of the Rover. As the water cascaded from the top someleaked between the door tops and the safaritop. “Oh no,” she cried, “It’s wet in here!” Ileaned over to her feet under the heatermatrix and put a finger in the puddle of water.Raising it to my lips I breathed a sigh of relief.“It’s only salt water,” I said happily, “not oil orantifreeze!”She looked at me in horror. Apparentlyin her automotive experience, water shouldnot enter the interior of a car. Pshaw! In myautomotive experience water on the floor wasvastly preferable to antifreeze [from when

the heater core dissolved] or engine oil[from when the split in the valve covergasket dripped oil in front of the airflowfrom the fan].Mr. Sammons concluded that “In a citywhere it’s so difficult to have a car, having aboring car is really stupid,” Which is as gooda reason to own a Land Rover as I haveever read._______ ________While stuffing the wood stove one Sunday, Iwas listening to the radio, in which thespeaker extolled the virtues of mendingclothes. As one who can barely sew a buttonon a shirt, I turned my attention away for awhile and then stopped short. “Mending oldclothes” is an awful lot like repairing old carson your own. No one mends just any old shirtor pants; only favorite ones warrant the timeand attention. And no one mends just any oldcar; it must have a special appeal for you toput your time and energy into it.I have often wished for better weatherwhen working outdoors on my Land Rovers, and I have cursed mightily when some repairhad gone less than smoothly. Yet there’s agreat deal of pride in doing the work yourself[or in my case, doing it again after I messedup the first repair] and learning to understandthe exploded diagrams in the ServiceManual or a Haynes Manual. My Land Rovers help me earn my incomeso making time for maintenance and repairsis a necessity, not a luxury. I can also pretendthat a vast amount of time spent reading up onLand Rovers is “work,” not “play.” Many realemployers [i.e., your boss] will not see it thatway. Let me recommend the Land RoverClassic Parts collection of CD’s which includetechnical information, service manuals andowners handbooks on every Land Rovermodel through the Range Rover Classic andDiscovery I. Whereas the printed manualswith their big Land Rover logos on the covermight invite unwelcome inquiries about“what on earth you’re doing,” the CD opensup on your computer screen. There’s everyopportunity to you to look engrossed in thelatest sales figures, memo from Corporate, research, and the like while you’re secretlyreading up on Land Rovers. It’s the best thingsince sticking magazines inside textbooks instudy hall. And you can print up the pages youneed on the company printer!_______ ________Like other owners of classic Land RoversI don’t get to the Land Rover Centre ordealerships very often. There’s only one indealer in Maine (Scarborough), one in NewHampshire (Bedford) and one in Vermont(Burlington), so I must admit there’s notmuch opportunity, either. Over the years, allthree dealerships have proven to be friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about theirnewer vehicles. They’re also good for a cup ofcoffee and occasionally free internet access, but they can tell that I’m not a potentialcustomer.Land Rover helped jumpstart the trendwith its successful Land Rover Centres. Whatbegan as some artifacts, casually dressed“sales guides,” VCR’s with Camel Trophy tapesand off-road demonstration courses, hasgrown into a monster. The Boston Globesuggested that one area Land Rovershowroom “bears a quiet gentility thatbreathes ‘money.’ You almost expect to seegentlemen and ladies in jodhpurs. It's allglass and cherry wood, with a wirelessbusiness workspace, a kitchenette withbeverages, leather chairs and flat-screen TV,children's playroom with cute miniaturerocking chairs and video box. The walls arecovered with vintage sports paraphernaliasuch as snowshoes, skis, and kayak paddles, the better to connote the rugged Land Roverlifestyle. Our favorite feature? Trevor, theowner's friendly, shaggy Briard, greetscustomers with wagging tail. There's also anoff-road course that shows customers justhow sturdy a Land Rover really is. Hang on.”With “customer luxury now a standardfeature,” it’s no surprise that one newbuilding in the Boston area cost $30 millionto erect, features Italian marble floors and 30– foot ceiling. There’s an espresso bar, arestaurant, a business center with Wi-Fi, acustomer lounge with a marble fireplace, plasma screen televisions in the marblebathrooms, another one for the kid’s room, and a nice restaurant. Another dealership hasa large bronze elephant stationed at thegrand entrance.A BMW dealership, measuring 130,000square feet, will include a cappuccino cafe,three-level showroom, three customerlounges with leather chairs and flat-panelTVs, a fleet of loaner cars, a children's zone, putting green, radiant heat, and twoconcierge desks. Yet another dealership has aputting green in case you want to practiceyour golf strokes.Needless to say, you have to sell a lotof cups of designer coffee to pay for theoverhead. While you’re luxuriating in adealership more elegant than any hotel you’dlikely stay at, your car is in the servicedepartment that’s scrambling to help theowner cover the costs of the building. It doeshelp explain the hourly rates are closing in on$100/hour. I’m also guessing you don’t see alot of salespeople dressed in the “FullCleveland Look:” plaid pants, white belts andwhite shoes. My personal showroom/servicedepartment is an open area between a largespruce tree and 30 feet of neatly-stackedfirewood. The dirt lane to the 100-year oldhouse is an off road demonstration course ofits own. A convenient tarp replaces themarble mentioned above as the “floor” overthe dirt surface. The ceiling opens to astunning view of the sky and the lack of wallsmeans that I have an unimpeded view of thesea and an intimate knowledge of theweather. The kids’ playroom requires onlythat they walk to the shore to play. A portableradio substitutes for the plasma screentelevision. There’s a wide variety of food anddrink; the menu depends on whether I wentto the store recently. The bathrooms are tothe left of the firewood; use any tree or bushyou wish. DISC BRAKE KITFOR SERIES II, IIA, III 1960 ONFront Kit shown PLA6100KVIt’s a thrill to reintroduce Timm Cooper’s disc brake conversion kitfor Series Land Rovers. Now you can install the latest Defender discbrake components onto your trusty 88” or 109” Land Rover andenjoy amazingly quick and controlled stopping power. Front kits arebased on a new hub assembly and new swivel ball housing, cast fromductile iron with a minimum strength rating of 80,000 pounds persquare inch, this kit is an engineering masterpiece. The front calipermounts are cast into the housings, just like Defender, to handle themassive 4 piston Defender calipers that grab 12 inch vented Defenderdiscs, just like the NAS 90 enjoys. Timm’s rear conversion kit uses thesame hub assemblies with solid Defender rear discs and 2 pistonDefender rear calipers. Using all Defender brake components, aswell as wheel bearings and seals, means easy service, easy partsavailability in the future, and adds directly to the value of yourLand Rover. These kits are designed to work with an 88” or 109” dual powermaster cylinder available on Land Rovers manufactured from 1969through 1984. For owners with early single non-power systemmaster cylinders, you will need to convert to a dual power mastercylinder. This conversion involves installing a vacuum port into yourintake manifold, installing a dual power pedal box assembly whichhouses the dual master cylinder, vacuum servo unit and brakelight switch. This pedal assembly is larger in size. It will requiremodifying your wing top, splashguard mount, and installing a SeriesIII style splashguard. You will then need to re-plumb your clutchmaster, and install additional brake lines to complete the dual circuit. You will also have the option of adding in a safety failure junctionvalve, with or without warning light, and choosing betweenhydraulically or mechanically activated brake lights. These parts canbe found in our catalog or on our website in our Series III brakesection. We also have available a good selection of second hand dualpedal box assemblies. Please contact us for assistance, and moreinformation on improving your brakes. SIGHTINGSMaybe the projected new corporateparents of Land Rover, Tata Motors, willappreciate the unique appearanceof Land Rover models. They clearlyresonate with the American andinternational public. The qualities thatwe love as Land Rover enthusiastsclearly captivate those who rousepopular passions. Movie directors, advertising art directors, and consumersagree if there's a Land Rover present, youshould pay attention. That assures us as alot of Sightings – in fact, lots and lots ofSightings.Once again there are superb entriesthat warrant emptying more of thecrockery cupboards at Rovers North. Asalways, it's helpful for rookies to reviewthe rules for Sightings - and useful as areminder for the grizzled Sightingveterans as well.Rule # 1 - All Sightings receiverecognition and our appreciation, butnot necessarily a mug. We reward onlythose Sightings that capture the uniquequalities of Land Rovers and theirowners, and display them in a distinctiveway.Rule #2 - If your Sighting does notreally surprise you, it won't surprise us,either, and you won't get a mug. We'redelighted, but not surprised, that LandRovers appear in British televisionprogrammes, British publications, filmswith British themes, and shows aboutAfrican safaris. You shouldn't besurprised, either, and should considerlooking for other ways to get a coffeemug.Rule #3 - At an ever-changing datebefore publication we close off theSightings. If we've mentioned the Sightingin an earlier issue, we won't mention itagain. If you're new to the family of LandRover enthusiasts, you may not have seenyour Sighting in an earlier issue.Rule #4 - We're not outfitting yourkitchen. If you qualify, please remember- one mug per Sighting per issue.Rule #5- Sightings that are LandRover references in books go to ourLiterary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits.Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't readyour name and address because ofatrocious penmanship, we can'trecognize your Sighting nor send youa mug. Psst...E-mail submissions -remember we can't send a mug bye-mail. Send us your real name andshipping address, too.Rule #7 - Grudgingly, verygrudgingly, the Editor admits he mightmake an error. Let me know if you thinkyou've been jobbed, but all decisions ofthe Editor are final.61

Your Editor is always appreciative of theefforts of Sighters; sadly, some Sightings come inafter deadline for the previous issue, whichmeans they fall under Rule # 3. Your Editorcannot award himself a mug for enjoying DVD’sof The Interpreter [which opens with a shot ofa Defender 110 in Africa] or The Italian Job[Defender 110 in evil role] remake. So we need to thank the Sighters whospotted the commercials and ads from Texaco,Garmin, Equitours, Cole Haan, NationalGeographic Traveler, Beretta, Farmers HealthPoint, Army Safety and Departures.
