MEET ME IN THE SQUARE
The Siding takes on a new look
If you haven’t been to Cockburn
Central Town Centre’s new town
square – affectionately known as
The Siding – you’re missing out on
some great street art.
A few months back, several
established artists got together
with local community groups to
update and improve The Siding’s
appearance while the area
undergoes a bit of a makeover.
A colourful mural is now in place for
you to feast your eyes on. We know
it’s hard to stop and admire the
work in the midday heat, so we are
incorporating more shaded seating
Driving Change
Tackling traffic WOES
and mature trees, to allow you to
appreciate our local art in comfort.
Soon you’ll have several good
reasons to slow down or even stop
at The Siding – whether it’s to take
some time out with a cuppa from
the coffee pod, watch the children
run about in the water play area or
access free wi-fi.
As LandCorp project manager Ben
McCarthy says, “the revitalisation will
provide lots of choice for people as a
place to relax and enjoy themselves
in the centre of the estate.”
We expect works to be completed
by October 2012.
The City of Cockburn and
Main Roads have joined
forces to make crucial
improvements to the traffic flow
at Cockburn Central.
With the help of a broad traffic
study, our complex traffic
problems are being tackled. The
study will determine areas of
priority, and also enable the City
to seek funding from the State
and Federal governments.
According to Micheal Littleton,
the City’s Director of Engineering
and Works, a range of network
improvements will be addressed
including short-term solutions
to traffic congestion such as
the upgrade of Beeliar Drive to
six lanes between Wentworth
Parade and the freeway.
Other solutions anticipated to
be completed within the next
12 months include:
• signals at Wentworth Parade
• improved traffic flow at the
freeway interchange
• upgrades to Berrigan Drive
• upgrades to address congestion
of Armadale Road between
Tapper Road and the freeway.
Traffic interruptions will
be necessary for these
improvements, but worthwhile
to have movement flowing
smoothly in the long run.

new Housing Adapts
to Change
Have you seen the new housing
development at Signal Terrace?
“Living Space” features futuristic and
adaptable design, unique landscaping and
a range of energy efficient measures like
lighting, water efficient fittings and heating
arrangements.
The development is designed to provide
improved access to those with restricted
mobility, as well as being easily adapted in
the future when life circumstances change.
And, it could also be the first multi-storey
residential building in WA to be linked to
the National Broadband Network.
Funded through the Commonwealth’s
Nation Building Economic Stimulus
Program, the development comprises 67
one-bedroom, 56 two-bedroom and seven
three-bedroom residential apartments,
as well as six commercial units. The
apartments will be spread across five
buildings ranging from three to five stories.
Landscaping will feature an internal
courtyard with trees actually planted
directly in the basement below.
If that’s not
enough to
impress, the
development
has also
achieved
six-star energy
ratings or
higher based on
the Nationwide
House Energy
Rating Scheme.
Construction
commenced in
November 2010
and is on track to
be completed by mid-2012.
Want one? The plan is to release
apartments by private sale, shared
equity, with rentals for affordable
living.
Off-the-plan sales of some of the
apartments will be launched shortly and
initial enquiries can be made through
housesales@housing.wa.gov.au or
telephone 9222 4849.
Familiar Faces
Who is that? It’s the question most
of us have asked while driving past
Cockburn Central train station on
the Kwinana Freeway or stepping
on to the train platform. Two giant
faces, one of a mature woman and
the other of a teenage boy, have
been on the billboards atop the
station tower for some time now.
The public artwork is the
creation of artists Marco Marcon
and rodney Glick.
entitled The Face of the Community,
the work contrasts elements of
realism with the unknown. If you
take the bus or train, both faces
may look vaguely familiar; each was
produced using hundreds of photos
of local residents then digitally
designed to represent the most
frequent users of public transport.
An artist’s diagram explaining
Commercial property developer Giorgi
has announced the completion of the
first stage of its highly anticipated
Plaza 817, a vibrant new commercial
development featuring executive offices
and retail outlets. This is a significant
addition to the area as it means more
shops, more offices and ultimately, more
employment for the local community.
“We’ll be commencing Stage 2 shortly
with a completion date near the end
of 2012,” Managing Director Guido
Giorgi said.
Comprising three architecturally
designed buildings, Plaza 817 provides
a contemporary and convenient base
for local business and is already
attracting wide interest within the
business community.
“We have sold all of the retail units in
the Centre Building and are currently
seeking an office tenant for the first
floor of the West Building. It’s an
excellent office space comprising
around 1,000 square metres of floor
space,” Development Manager
Steve Smith said.
The design of the commercial space
ensures businesses can provide stateof-the-art
offices, secure basement
parking for staff, a ground floor café
and client street parking.
The strata-titled offices and consulting
suites will be spread over two levels
of commercial space and are set
to make an impressive statement
on the Cockburn Central Town
Centre landscape.
The addition of a boutique-style
retail precinct and food court will
offer the business and residential
community a pleasurable and relaxed
shopping experience with plenty of
modern amenities.
Giorgi has been designing and
implementing award-winning
architecture and interior design for
more than 20 years and has a
portfolio of successful projects under
its belt, including developments in
Subi Centro, West Perth, East Perth
and Osborne Park.

The Fire and Emergency Services
Authority (FESA)’s operational arm
will soon be moving into the new
Emergency Services Complex on
Stockton Bend. Construction of the
expansive site was completed in
December 2011. You may start to
notice more people in the area as staff
start to move in this year.
The complex itself looks to
be as useful as it is unique.
Its open plan design creates a
contemporary look with plenty
of natural light and a feeling of
spaciousness while adhering to
strict environmental standards.
Housing the Communication Centre
and the State Coordination Centre
throughout two wings and three
floors, the building features an
impressive operations centre, meeting
rooms, training area and gym.
NEW HOME
FOR FESA
READY BY
MiD YEAR
An outdoor courtyard will provide
FESA’s support staff, volunteers and
cadets, of which the first 350 staff will
move in mid-2012, a place to socialise
and enjoy lunch.
Specially commissioned works of art
by WA resident artist Mark Datodi
and sculptor Steve Tepper give added
flair and creativity to communal
areas. The art draws on the four
elements: air, earth, fire and water.
