When MustafaKemal took the Bandırmaboat three days before,he looked at the enemynavy anchored at the darksea of the Bosphorus andsaid “They will leave asthey came”. Really, theyleft as they came...The 19 th of May is the day when the step was taken of the road leading to theindependence of the Republic of Turkey... The day when the Independence Warbegan and the future of the Turkish nation began to brighten up... But do youknow what is the essential importance of May 19 th ? It is the adopted birthdayof Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. During an interview he said “I wasborn in May 19 th !”. This is why we celebrate May 19 th every year as Youthand Sports Day but also to commemorate Atatürk, we remember of him at hissecond birthday with yearning and gratefulness. In fact we do not know thereal birthday of The Great Leader. Hence his official birthday is May 19 th .84 years ago, when Mustafa Kemal took the road in order to give the chanceto choose their own future for this nation, he had nothing but his faith. He didnot have high technology artillery, nor big battleships, tanks or submarines...The enemy forces had all these. However Atatürk trusted the Turkish nation.He was not afraid of the enemy navy and he said “When I saw Samsun andthe people of Samsun I firmly believed that all my ideas and decisions aboutthe country and the nation could be executed. The patriotism and devotion Isaw in the people of Samsun’s state and position was enough to take my hopeand thinkings to a positive belief...” Saying “They are based on iron, steel andarmed forced. The only thing they know is material. They do not understandthe force of people who decided to die for freedom.
