PRESIDENT’S annual REPORTIt is with much pleasure that I presentthe President's Annual Report for the yearended December 2011.MEMBERSHIPOverall membership is down by 11people from 2579 in 2010 to 2568 in 2011.Full members are down by 15 people,Junior membership is up 11%, but socialmembership is down by 14%. Perhaps moreclub Presidents should be taking an activeinterest in their members taking the SocialMembership option. Other questions thatneed asking are if Club executive membersare just allowing members to shoot at theirclub or are they actively ensuring they areNZCTA members? This is what the differentmembership categories were introducedfor, to enable all competitors to contributeto the organisation and pay their share ofthe administration, operational costs, andinsurance of running their sport.LEVY PAYMENTSI would also like to thank clubs forcompliance with levy payments. Continualaudits are now done, and we are pickingup very few issues. The splitting of leviesnow allows us to clearly identify how muchrevenue is generated from each disciplinestream. This gives us clear guidelineswhen allocating funds for team travel anddevelopment for the various disciplineswhich we operate under. Clubs that areshort changing the NZCTA through notpaying the correct amount of leviescollected are actually defrauding theshooters who support them.ANNUAL BALANCE SHEETIt is pleasing to report in theserecessional times, the NZCTA has againmade an increased net profit for the year. The National Executive works hard tominimise increased expenses and keepoperational costs under control. We arealso very aware that the level of service toour clubs must not be compromised. TheAssociation is not in the business of makingmoney, but acknowledges it is often adifficult balance delivering what you, themembers want and expect, and chargingfor the running costs of the organisation. The total assets of the Association haveincreased overall in the past year to a netvalue from $483000 to just over $545000.Some Members have mentioned orquestioned about the growing reservesof the NZCTA throughout the year, andNeil Winsloe did mention this aspect, aspart of his Council Profile for the Executiveelections. The National Executive hasalready discussed the option of creating aTrust Fund and I am currently investigatingother options to protect this pool of moneythat has been built up over many years. It would be envisaged that Life Membersoutside of the National Executive wouldbecome the Trustees and Guardians, ofany Trust Fund established. It wasn’t thatlong ago that the NZCTA had no moneyand it has only been through carefulmonetary control by previous Presidentsand Executive Members, presiding overthe income and operational expenditure, that these reserves have been able toaccumulate. It would only take a fewdisastrous years of the income stream,or a serious litigation matter, to wipe outa major portion of these cash reserves. Iwould also like to mention at this stage thatthe NZCTA is not reliant on any externalfunding organisations for their day to dayrunning costs. This is a luxury that manyother organisations envy.NATIONAL EXECUTIVEWe must all be extremely gratefulfor the knowledge and experiencethat Adrienne is contributing as part ofher normal repertoire. I cannot speakhighly enough concerning her servicesto our chosen sport. Her knowledge, experience and advice have saved me fromembarrassment on a number of occasions.Adrienne has now completed 21 years’service to the NZCTA, and I can assure youher loyalty is greatly appreciated by the fullmembership.A special bond exists between thePresident, Executive Officer, and the FullExecutive. This bond leads all electedrepresentatives to a deep appreciationof the work that each executive memberundertakes in the four different disciplines. We should all be extremely grateful for thefamily sacrifices, and personal time thateach elected member of your executivegives so willingly. I would personally like tocongratulate them all on the work we haveachieved as a team over the past year. This year George Johnston is retiringfrom the Executive, and I know you allshare with me in thanking him for hisimmense contribution over 12 years, andwish him well in his new endeavours.I would like to also mention underthe national executive heading the deepappreciation by all members to thecontinued support shown from the LifeMembers, who still care deeply about theworkings of the NZCTA. Their experienceis unprecedented, and the assistance andadvice I have had personally in my role I amvery grateful for. I hate to single out peoplebut George Ellis, our Patron, always hasan ear to the ground concerning Firearmssubmissions, and last year was no exceptionto him becoming personally involved onour behalf with this very delicate issue.Ensuring we are allowed to continue tohold ammunition in safe custody withinour residential homes, and continue tocarry ammunition and equipment aroundthe country in an unrestricted mannerunder the banner of our firearms license. Abig thank you George from everybody.Last year we lost NZCTA, Tauranga, andCanterbury Life Member, Murray Havill.Murray was a mentor for many members.Murray was one of the original instigatorsof creating the new Waikato Club nationalgrounds. His generosity and friendlyattitude to everybody and his deepappreciation and addiction to the sportwill be sadly missed by everybody whoknew him.gunshot7

CLUB EXECUTIVEI would like all members to acknowledgethe immense workload that members atclub Executive level carry out on behalfof local membership to create a localclub spirit that becomes very evident.Club Presidents that step up to take theresponsibility for the direction of their club, often very reluctantly, must be applauded. The club Secretaries who keep the officeticking over and create the planning priorto the shoot, the workload during theshoot, and after the shoot correspondingwith the National Office. Most membershave absolutely no appreciation orunderstanding of the workload carriedpersonally by local club Secretaries. Wemust also personally acknowledge thetrap setters, club captains, trap mechanics, kitchen workers and bar staff, who worktirelessly on our behalf to make this sportso great and create the camaraderie thatensures we all have an enjoyable day.NZCTA Sub-Committees of SportingClays and School sub-committees mustalso be congratulated for creating thedirection their discipline is to travel, andfor the guidance to the national executiveto ensure together we are all harmoniouslydelivering what the members want. I mustpersonally thank each sub-committee, forhaving the intestinal fortitude to standup and be counted when sometimes thenational executive has required furtherguidance and information. It has also been a very difficult year forthe clubs of Canterbury, caused throughthe natural disaster. Everyone has beenaffected to some degree or other and thethoughts of everyone around the countryhave been with you all during this difficulttime. Fortunately the national ground hascome through the earthquakes relativelyunscathed and the members of the clubsof the region must be applauded for theirdedication to the sport when also dealingwith major issues with their homes andbusiness premises, plus dealing mentallywith the continuing aftershocks that rackthe area. We all hope and trust that 2012will be better. However, regardless of whatthe future holds in this regard, please beassured that the NZCTA and clubs of NZ,will support the clubs and members ofthe Canterbury region without question ifrequired.GUNSHOTThe Gunshot magazine is a publicationthe executive and all members should bevery proud of. Some issues of Gunshotresemble more of a book than a magazinewith some issues getting up over 80 pages. The Gunshot could not be producedwithout the continued efforts of TomBegg being proactive month after monthto ensure the release to the membership.Tom puts in his valuable expertise to everyissue and has to structure his own personaland family activities around the timingof the issues. He does all this for the loveof the sport and we all appreciate thetremendous work he does for us. Tom hasbeen doing this work for many years nowand we appreciate the time he gives sofreely. What is also very pleasing is that themagazine is increasing in size, and we arestill able to show an increased profit fromit. Tom, we all cannot thank you enough.NATIONAL COMPUTER CLUBINTEGRATION ENHANCEMENTSNew national computer enhancementswill be tested at club level shortly as atrial, rather than try it out at the biggestshoot it will ever have to perform at i.e.the National DTL Championships. Theprogrammer is busy working on it at themoment and a trial version is expected tobe released shortly. This is only the firststep to a fully integrated system. Oncethe shoot programme is fully operational, the national database will be overhauledto send and receive data at the NationalOffice. This will allow the automaticupload and download of data betweenthe National Office and clubs via the website, and facilitate a total data exchange. This will enable clubs to work with themost up to date data and send electronicreturns to the National Office, enabling theelimination of many current paper reports. It is vital that each stage of this process iscompleted to enable it to dovetail into theother stages and all stages must work bothindependently and cohesively. The mostexciting outcome of all of this is both aconsistent shoot programme at club leveland a helping hand for club secretaries tomake their job more efficient.NZCTA WEB SITE.Last year Council approved an upgradeof the web site to slightly modernisethe look of this. Work is currently beingfinalised and the outcome will soon be liveon-line. The web site continues to be thesecond most major portal of the NZCTAand is a very valuable resource. The website has remained mainly unchanged sinceit was launched in June 1999. And by theend of that year was attracting 264 hits permonth. Two years later it had grown to over3000 hits per month, and in 2011 it had anaverage of almost 4000 unique visitors permonth, with an average of 7800 number ofvisits per month.SPONSORSHIPMany hours have been spent by BarryWilliamson and your Executive obtainingsponsorship. In these times of economicrecession it has not been an easy task.Barry continues to seek sponsorship foryou on a completely voluntary basis. Allmembers must be indebted to him for hisexpertise to make it all worthwhile for you,the competitor. We are indeed blessedwith having all this sponsorship availableto us from our very valued sponsors. However, sponsors will only continue tosupport our sport if you support themwhenever and wherever possible. To all ourmain NZCTA sponsors for the 2011 year,Beretta NZ, Kilwell Sports and GameboreAmmunition, Gunn Estate Wines, NZ Fishand Game Council, Champion and MaxamAmmunition, Armusa Ammunition, StagerSports and Blaser Firearms, Perazzi NZ, NZDairy Farmers, George Ellis and GraemeWebber, thank you all from every memberof the NZCTA.The Beretta Junior Scholarshipcontinues to be a major “leg up” for ourJunior Competitors. It is always verydifficult for the NZCTA selection panel tofind a recipient to represent Beretta NZ,from the many very worthy applicants. Abig thank you to Martyn Coe from BerettaNZ, for this very valued sponsorship, andalso to Barry Williamson, for organising thesponsorship on a yearly basis with BerettaNZ on behalf of the NZCTA.HALL OF FAMEGavin and Bev Searle continue tomonitor the individual competitor’sstatistics on behalf of the NZCTA. Theannual Hall of Fame evening eventcontinues to draw considerable interestfrom our members to honour the worthyrecipients. Clubs are also nominatingoutstanding members' contributions at alocal level, to be awarded a “Certificate ofAchievement”. This is encouraging, as itis not only event winners that are beingcelebrated on this Hall of Fame evening. We still require a separate stand-alonebuilding at some future date to houseand exhibit the memorabilia that havebeen kindly donated by members and8gunshot

their families. Should any member wishto donate funds to this worthy cause, weare always open to offers. The cost of anappropriate climate controlled buildingwould be expensive but we have to make astart. Thank you to Gavin and Bev for yourcontinued work in this area.SCHOOL SHOOTINGSchool Shooting continues to grow, with clay target shooting now being firmlyentrenched in many school curriculumswhere students are given a choice ofwhich sport they wish to follow for thecoming year. It does not get better thanthat for introducing new entrants to ourfavourite sport. The school coaches andadministrators, including the school subcommittee, must be congratulated for themajor effort they are contributing weekafter week. Many NZCTA competitors, who have come through the schoolprogramme, are now successful winners ofNZ championships, which is attributable tothe grounding they received initially fromschool coaches. Every major school eventappears to be growing, with the NZ SchoolChampionships being a major draw cardon the school calendar.ISSFAttendances at domestic ISSF eventscontinue to show very little growth.ISSF is a difficult discipline to masterfor beginners and the cost of travel andaccommodation to attend the variouszone competitions around NZ is a largebarrier to overcome for some athletes.Attending these matches is necessary togive athletes their ranking based on theirperformance for World Cups selectionon a yearly basis, and Commonwealthand Olympic Games nomination every4 years. Finding a suitable venue in theLower North Island is still a problem forZone and Island competitions. The lackof participating athletes, number of daysclubs can operate under resource consent, and manual traps requiring expensiveoperational manual trapper costs havebeen a major contributing factor toreluctance from clubs to hold events. TheSouth Zone ISSF Championships in 2011had to be held at Waitemata CTC, wherea new Olympic trap layout complete with15 new La Porte traps and microphones, has been installed . The Waitemata CTCmust be congratulated, in particular IanHovenden who has been a driving forceto construct this wonderful facility for theshooters of NZ. One highlight performanceof the year in ISSF was by Jack Norwood, who won a Silver Medal when he shot122 targets out of 125 at the Junior WorldChampionships in Belgrade. This followshis Olympic Qualifying MQS score shot atWaitemata CTC which gives him two MQSOlympic qualifying scores to qualify forthe 2012 London Olympic Games. Jackstill needs an Olympic quota place to gainnomination by the NZSF.NZ SHOOTING FEDERATION.Quarterly meetings are now held inWellington, with the four disciplinesattending: Pistol NZ, Target Shooting NZ,NRA, and NZCTA. I attend as the NZCTADelegate and on occasions it is necessaryfor other NZCTA executive members toattend. The NZSF is responsible for all theOlympic Discipline result statistics fromour ISSF Domestic MQS Qualifying Events, and also for World Cup Selection Policiesand results. Gavin Paton is the ExecutiveOfficer in charge, and the President isDavid Tomlinson from Pistol NZ.SPORTING CLAYS.The sporting clays portfolio is largelyformulated and driven by the SportingClays sub-committee who arrange theyearly events calendar, and recommendimprovements for the discipline to theNational Executive for ratification ofpolicy, funding, competition venues, andteam selection through the SportingClays Director. This may sound a verycumbersome way to conduct the businessof sporting clays, however it works verywell as the sub-committee are masters oftheir own destiny however, always underthe watchful eye of the Sporting ClaysDirector. This arrangement also allows forthe sporting subcommittee to arrangethe sharing of equipment between clubvenues. The sporting fraternity is indeedvery fortunate to have such a passionategroup of administrators in control of theirdiscipline. I have the greatest admirationfor the sporting sub-committee’sperformance over the past year, and thesporting columns in Gunshot have beena joy to read and catch up with what ishappening within the discipline. I mustmention the efforts of Rob Carruthers,in updating the sporting portion of theNZCTA website and for recording thestatistics from every event. A new clubhas also been registered with the NZCTA,titled “South Island Sporting Clays” andobviously has membership throughout theSouth Island.DTL/AMERICAN SKEET.Record attendances have beenevident at many Provincial, Island andNational Championship events in 2011.The upgrade of facilities at club levelhas been very pleasing to see. Yourexecutive is always looking at ways toimprove facilities, and club administrationfor you the competitor. The World DTLChampionships have been awarded to NZto be held in 2014, in conjunction with ourNational Championships. Both nationalgrounds went through a selection processguided by the National Executive. Theannouncement at the 2011 AGM was thatthe World DTL Championships are to beheld at Waikato CTC.A contract is in force between theNZCTA and Waikato CTC to conduct thistournament. Much planning work wascompleted in 2011. The NZCTA worksvery closely with David Muggeridge, the Waikato President, over matters ofimportance. The Skeet Nationals have continuedto grow in popularity, and numbers ofcompetitors, since its separation fromthe DTL Nationals. This has allowed theskeet discipline to expand into a growthof its own with more members choosingto shoot the discipline as a first choiceoption. Multiple skeet events are beingheld at numerous clubs with small gaugecompetitions as part of the weekendevents also being popular. The Glenn Cup and Glenn TrophyCompetition with Australia is still thepinnacle of Team Shooting for Nationalrepresentation and all team membersin 2011 are congratulated for their topperformance.IN CLOSINGI trust after hearing this report you aresatisfied that your elected representatives,as administrators of your sport, haveworked tirelessly on your behalf in 2011.I am very proud of their achievements, and the NZCTA Executive looks forward toserving you all, to the best of our combinedabilities, for the coming year.Your President, Keith Livingstone.Annual general meetingreport on page 49 »gunshot9

By Ron MaddenNZ Sporting Clay nationalsNZ Sporting Ladies 1st, 2nd, 3rdNZ Sporting Nationals Top 5 ShootersThe newly formed South Island Sporting Clay Shooters had puttheir hand up for the 2012 Nationals and Grand Prix, a daunting task fora one year old club but one we all wanted to do. The club, purposely, has no set ground believing that ‘green fields’ sporting shooting is thebest way to go and that it offers no advantage to anyone competingand makes it exciting for all to shoot. The location chosen for theseprestigious events was Northburn Station, a 34,000 acre workingsheep station, vineyard and restaurant only 4 K’s from Cromwell. Thestation would do all the catering and the club the shoot.Club Target Director Graeme Brown had made 5 or six visits to theStation so by the time the troops arrived he had maps, photos andtrajectories all planned out. There were around 50 traps on hand, 5 per Par Cour, 5 for thepractice field and a few spares. The plan was to have 4 traps and fourstands per field all reasonably close for the Nationals, then to adda 5th trap and move the stands well apart for the GP offering bothshoots something different. There were two days between events toreconfigure the set up.The ground was tough to say the least: deep gullies, rockyoutcrops, steep faces everywhere, but ‘reasonable’ access to most trapplacements. Those traps that Graeme wanted away from tracks, weremanhandled mainly by human dynamos Rob Curruthers and BlakeHolden with Steve Gill and Brian Forrest not too far behind. A hugeeffort indeed. The idea was to shoot the Nationals over two days, shooting 100targets at one visit up the hill. It was a big ask of shooters but therational behind it was to give shooters at least ½ a day off on shootingdays just to relax or visit the greater Central Otago area. As one smartAussie said “to find the most ways to pay to kill yourself”. Then give allvisiting shooters the two days off between events to have a completebreak away. Was the idea successful? Yes I think so? Those that likedit were rapt and really loved the idea; the few who disapproved hadtheir reasons as well. The old story you cannot please all the people….no matter how hard you try. Same story with the targets I must say!We wanted to make this event different to all others, and that was oneof those things that we thought would work. The shoot itself, well it was tough, extremely technical andunrelenting. I personally think the big country and inability to workout exactly what the targets were doing against changing, contrastingbackgrounds of every level you could imagine. There was not one trapset on the level, springs were all at different tensions and the settersthrew every sort of target possible at shooters, rabbits, battues, bees, midis, stealths, rockets. Not to mention white and flouro greencolours added to the mix. Most clubs around Australasia struggle tothrow targets under your feet, added to this, huge targets on tracksand roads miles above you, all adds up to: bad technique bad result!!Even worse if you have never even seen such targets in your shootinglife. Some of the shooters had every excuse in the world (and somenot) for missing, but the vast majority just blamed themselves, andmany said they would just love to shoot the course again.141 shooters lined up to do battle, 94 from New Zealand, 40Australians, four New Caledonians, one from Great Britain and twowith no country listed. It is great to see Sarah Hamburger and Mark Vessey shooting forNZ. After two days of every sort of comment and theory imaginableMark Vessey emerged from the dust and rocks with a 178/200 by hisname, and that was enough to take it from Mark Marshall by onetarget, followed by John Younger after a shoot off. Brian Deadmanwas the first Kiwi home on 174.Mark Vessey took the winners sash, magnum of Northburn wine,$1500 and a new trophy donated by John Younger. John had donatedthree of the four Rodd & Gunn cast retriever dogs that he had won onprevious forays into New Zealand. One for HOA, Ladies and Juniors. Itwas a magnanimous gesture by John and after some heavy ribbingby his Aussie mates his arm was twisted hard enough to have twomore cast so he can complete all the categories with these superbtrophies. Funny how his mates were in those missing categories! Johnhas been coming here for many, many years and, along with GeorgeDigweed, John Bidwell and a few others, has been responsible forfurthering our shooting ability and introducing us to real Internationalcompetition. I would be remiss not to mention Tony Truss’s efforts inrefurbishing the trophies, even researching every past winner sinceSporting started having a Nationals, and in each category and addingthem to the trophies. Tony did this just for the love of the sport andit obviously had taken many, many hours. They looked stunning andJohn and Tony’s efforts were certainly appreciated by all shooters. The Nationals concluded with prize giving at the Northburn Shedwinery, with nibbles supplied, shooters made the most of it in sucha splendid setting and was a fitting and relaxed end to two days ofintense competition.I think a HUGE vote of thanks must go to our principal sponsorsin Graeme Brown (Target Products) who provided over 30 new traps, cash and kind plus the expertise and hundreds of hours in settingup fields. To our Event Director, Neil Winsloe (Clean Burn) not onlygunshot 13

NZ Sporting Super Veterans Stuart Nicholls 3rd, Max Cavanah1st, Russell McGowan 2ndNZ Sporting Veterans Bob Brown, Darryl Groundwater LanceFaulknersporting commentWell the major part of the Sporting year isbasically over, but not to worry a new one withmore targets, more banter and more lies willsoon begin. The first half of the year has hadall our majors, the Nationals, GP and this yearthe Oceania is being hosted by New Zealandin the Waikato. The big gamble of runningthe Nationals and GP in the same week paidoff, with around 141 shooters heading toCromwell with the lure of 400 tough targetsplus all the normal tourist activities of theCentral Otago region. Although there arealways pros and cons to running two toughevents together, it definitely attracts overseascompetitors who are able to get more (sorry)bang for their buck. Personally, I would liketo see more of this style of event even if atdifferent clubs in the same Island. I think therewards for clubs far outweigh any negativeeffect on the sport. On reflection of our Nationals, we(S.I.Sporting) would probably run any futureNationals as a three day event, as trying to run141 thru 8 old style Par Cours in two days wasa pretty tough ask. That is if ‘old style’ is thepreferred option. It is regarded as the purist’sversion of the discipline. It was only achievedby very good equipment, very willingshooters, lots of pre planning and some verygood luck. A huge thanks to all our Sportingsponsors who obviously make these eventspossible, and to all our Sporting sponsorsthroughout the country who seem to bereally getting behind us which is just great forthe sport and its future. Even if you don’t usetheir product, do engage with them, makethem feel welcome and part of what’s goingon. You could even shout them a coffee ormaybe a round or two on the practice field. The people who rarely get thanked are theshooters themselves, it’s a big ask for youngor family members to pack up for a week andspend $2,500+ on what is essentially a selfishsport. It takes planning from all sorts ofdirections for shooters to commit themselvesto long events; their efforts are appreciatedand understood. It is also extremely pleasingto host our International visitors who makethe effort to attend many of our sportingevents. They make an event truly worthwhileand it gives all shooters (well except for DesCoe) a chance to benchmark themselvesagainst some of the best in the business!Several of our sporting shooters haveencountered some ‘issues’ when shootingskeet gun down at a few clubs. They havebeen told and in no uncertain terms that therule had changed and it must now be shot‘gun up’.I had a chat to Councillor Blue Freeman(Referee/Rules Convener) at the AGM andhe re-iterated to me that the rule HAD NOTchanged!!6-28 Gun Position (Skeet)Any safe position that is comfortableto the shooter. I hope that it clears up anymisunderstanding that may be occurringaround the country.Congratulations to Geoff Wells in makingthe Mackintosh Team at the DTL Nationals, agreat effort especially when he is trying to dobusiness and shoot at the same time. The Hall of Fame seemed to feature highlyat the Annual Meeting, and personally I amfor something that will protect our shootingheritage. I think any Association or groupwith some history and many years behindthem like the NZCTA should do everythingto look after its past history. I hope down thetrack, once fully established, it will include alldisciplines under the NZCTA umbrella and beable to include Sporting and ISSF. It would befantastic to be able to showcase the recordsand achievements of shooters like Des Coeand Tony Truss who move so easily betweencodes and have had top success at all levelsand in all codes.During the Nationals the Sporting ClayCommittee had a meeting and amongst thetopics discussed was looking at extendingour shoot plan out to at least two yearsand hopefully beyond. Clubs are telling usthat they simply cannot achieve all that isrequired in the 9/10 months now availableafter confirmation of an event. Clubs aregetting very professional in their approachto major shoots and part of that is going forexternal funding which can take well overa year to realise. We do not want to put anyclub in a position of having to ‘bend thetruth’ with funding applications just to get itdone on time. It would be good for any clubwishing to run a qualifying, Island, Nationals,Grand Prix or even Oceania shoot to flag itwith the SCC, and then we are aware thatthey are interested and can have furtherdialogue with them.Funding for teams from levies is alwaysgoing to be an issue and one, I can assure you, that the Sporting Committee is aggressivelypursuing at every opportunity. I am hopingwhen the new NZCTA computer system isfully up and running any anomalies in leviesthat still exist will be a thing of the past.It was also decided, as we are very keento have some funding for teams for theWorld Champs in the USA, that with ourlimited budget we would only pay for teamentries for the Oceania. In the past full entriesamounting to around $6,000 have been paid, but this would wipe our entire fund. We aregoing back to Council to plead our caseagain as we cannot see us needing majorfunding outside our daily levy for quite someconsiderable time.Ron Maddengunshot 15

2012By Adrienne SearsDTL NationalsThe first day of the DTL Nationals will not be remembered for theway the Canterbury Club had presented the grounds, or the hospitalitythe club greeted everyone but the weather bomb that was passingover the country disrupting travel plans, cancelling ferry sailings andflights. This also meant that when shooting did start for the day theconditions could only be described as atrocious. The wind and rainplayed havoc with the targets and the cold wasn’t to be underestimated. The shooters from Fiji were wondering what they had signed up for.Despite the appalling conditions that prevailed and prevented somefrom attending there were 141 shooters who shot the Ball Trap. This wasonly 4 down from two years ago which is pretty good. The weather didimpact on the scores and it was local shooter Graeme Ede who tookthe title and the Silver Fern and the first of the Gunn Estate wines on46. Gunn Estate Wines are supporting sponsors of the championshipsand for this we are very grateful. The club is stocking this fine wine in itsbar and I’m told it is a consistent top seller. Please support this sponsorwhen purchasing your wine from your local wine merchant. Thiscompany has supported our shooting championships for a very longtime now and we are always appreciative of this. One target behindGraeme were 4 shooters who had to brave the elements to establishthe AA grade placings. The Gorge Road boys were out in force and justto prove they were starting as they meant to continue Brad Warnocktook 1st AA Grade place, followed by Australians Clayton Anderson(2nd) and Stephen Atkins (3rd). The A Grade was won without theMaxam Ammunition Trophy HOA StephenDiack16 gunshotNZ Handicap by Distance Championship1st Shane Watsonneed for shoot offs with Mile Millard from West Otago taking 1st placeon 41. The B grade places didn’t need a shoot off as they were alsoestablished within the match and Canterbury shooter Kim Ridgen took1st place B Grade but had to shoot off to take the Ladies title as well.Fiji shooter Dave Evans won C grade on 31 which was a phenomenaleffort considering these shooters from Fiji were so cold at one pointthey couldn’t feel their fingers.Canterbury Traps and Voice Release sponsored a Points Score trophyevent which was the second event of the day. The array of trophieswas very fitting for the conditions. Wonderful thick fluffy towels. BruceRickard was on hand to present the trophies on behalf of CanterburyTraps and Voice Release to the recipients. John Waldon from Rotoruacame through to take HOA, followed by the Southland boys StuartSutherland and Lindsay Rodgers AA Grade 1st and 2nd respectively.Young Alexander Brown from Nightcaps won both the Junior trophyand 1st place B grade with a score of 72.Sunday saw the skies slightly brighter. No rain and less wind butthere was still a chill in the air but the forecast was for things to improve. The Provincial Shoulder to Shoulder event was first up. All bar Nelsonand Westland provinces were represented which was pleasing to see.The Waikato boys (Neil Pratt, John Beddis, Dave Wordley, GraemeWilliams, Ron Thomassen) proved they were just too good for the restof the field and took the coveted trophy 3 targets ahead of Southlandon 370. This was followed by the best dressed competition. This ismore than just an opportunity to get dressed up. It reflects showing apride in the Province where you come from and putting a united frontto the country. Not least is the coveted Ray and Pat Mac trophy whichthe winning team gets to hold for 12 months. This trophy is certainlyone of the more elaborate ones in our stable and would take pride ofplace in any situation. This year is it was a close call between the Bay ofPlenty and Southland teams but the Bay of Plenty boys won by a smallmargin. Grant Castles, Mark Walsh, Brian Hartley, Ian Marshall and DaveDa Silva are to be congratulated for portrayingsuch a brilliant Provincial uniform. Manythanks to the other provinces that took thetime and effort to participate in this event andenter into the spirit of what the best dressedcompetition is all about.By the time the Handicap by Distanceevent started the sun had come out and the“discussions” over the merterages had dieddown and the shooting had got underway.Maxam Ammunition was the sponsor of boththe NZ Handicap by Distance Championshipand the Points Score trophy match that washeld immediately after. The club house wasablaze with Maxam ammunition which wasfiercely contested for. Two hundred and thirtythree shooters shot the Handicap by DistanceChampionship. This compared favourably tothe 234 in 2010 and 228 in 2011. There werefour shooters who came out with a possible but their shoot off todetermine who gets the Silver Fern, the Gunn Estate Wines, the trophyand the Maxam Ammunition only went four targets and was won byShane Watson This was the 1st to 4th places sorted but there were 10shooters all tied on 49 plus 2 Super Veterans who had to shoot off. TheSuper Veterans shoot off only went 7 targets to give Jim Hannah themedal. James Bonney shot 35 targets in the shoot off giving him 5thplace after Cameron Rooney missed his target and took the 6th place.

The Maxam Ammunition Trophy event sawStephen Diack from Nightcaps take the stack ofammunition, followed by Stuart Sutherland andEwen Pirie who were 1st and 2nd respectivelyin AA Grade, also on 75. Waitemata shooter andnew NZCTA Councillor John Tonkin took 1stA Grade with the only possible in that gradefollowed by fellow club member Gary Vittle on74. The Fiji shooters again made their presencefelt by winning 2nd B Grade (Christian Stephen)and 1st C Grade (Dave Evans). The Maxamammunition was appreciatively received by theshooters and will be put to good use during therest of the week.Monday saw the numbers swell to 249 forthe NZ Double Rise Championship, way up on222 last year and 217 in 2010. The NZ DoubleRise was sponsored by Stager Sport who putout a most impressive array of trophies forthe winners. These trophies included handengraved German crystal beer mugs plus otheroutdoor equipment that was in keeping withthe company’s image of deer, ducks, game andthe great outdoors. Don Jarvis representedthe company at the presentations to hand outthe trophies. Steve Atkins from Australia tookout the HOA title clear on 49. There were 8shooters who were 1 target behind on 48 andfellow Australian Glen Castellaro won the shootoff to take 1st AA Grade from young Hawke'sBay shooter Dylan Woolhouse. Neil Berry, whohad kindly donated the Super Veterans trophyalong with his lovely wife, Wilma, a couple ofyears back when he won the event and foundthere was no cup, got to win this cup this year. The NZ Minis Championship was sponsoredby Stihl. This event had 249 entries which wasa record number for this event as 223 shootershot this in 2011 and in 2010. Barry Foster isa very generous sponsor and the prize tablewas a focal point for the day. The Association isindebted to Barry for this generous sponsorship. The array of chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, vacuum cleaners and other Stihl equipmenthad to be seen to be believed, plus Barry hadgenerously donated 14 drawn prizes. Therewere 6 possibles but the shoot off only went 8targets to see Australian Bruce Powell take theHOA, the Gunn Estate wine, the trophy, SilverFern and Stihl trophy. Bruce was a very happyman indeed. Rachael van Bysterveldt won boththe Ladies and Juniors on 23 and local shooterCharlie Stewart took the Veterans' medal alsoNZ Ball Trap Championship HOA GraemeEdeNZ Single Rise Championship Junior GregBentlyNZ Triples Championship HOA DylanWoolhouseon 23. Timaru stalwart Pop Andreassend completed the category lineup, also on 23 to win the Super Veterans.Tuesday started out cloudy but when the sun came out it remindedus what the weather should be doing. The ice cream van did a roaringtrade all afternoon. The NZ Triples Championship is sponsored by anexceptional group of sponsors. These are shooters and supporters whoare also dairy farmers, namely; Stuart & Carol Bell, Brian Smith & family,Jim & Margaret Tarrant, Grant & Tracey Nilsson, Ewen Pirie & family,Michael & Margaret Holmes, Trevor & Jan Manson, Bill & Denise Dunn,Eion Park & family, Lindsay Maxwell, Judy Mabeyand family, Grant & Chrissy Harrison, Barry &Rosa Peake and Gary & Adrienne Rooney andfamily. Once again there was a selection ofknives that any professional chef would beproud of, brought back from Norfolk Island. Our thanks go to these sponsors for makingthis championship so desirable and unique.Pete’s Place in Norfolk Island generously gaveCarol and Stuart Bell a generous discount andfor this we thank them, plus thank you to thepeople who transported these back fromNorfolk Island. Two hundred and sixty fourshooters shot this event, up from 260 in 2010and 263 in 2011. From this field there were only5 possibles and it was really lovely to see youngHawkes Bay shooter Dylan Woolhouse comeout the victor after the shoot off. Dylan has agreat future ahead of him in this sport and iscertainly a name to look out for. Young HamishBell and Arty Del-Ben had to go another roundto establish the 2nd and 3rd places in AAgrade This time it was Arty’s experience thatwon the day but watch out, young Hamish isanother name to look out for as he is anotherone who is going places. There was also a shootoff required in the Super Veterans categorybetween Cambridge shooter Laurie Coppinsand Neil Berry from Australia. This time it wasLaurie who took the title after a 15 target shootoff. The Buck Knives North vs South DTL Teamsmatch final was also scheduled for today. These teams are the culmination of a year’sshooting at District, Provincial and IslandChampionships and places in the team arefiercely competed for. It is very rare for a teammember not to be present at the Nationals tocompete in this prestigious event and this yearwas no exception. Kilwell are to be heartilycongratulated for their continued sponsorshipof this event. The Buck Knives that the winningteams receive are coveted by the recipients. This year the North Island Open team ofBrendan Malcolm, Peter Borrie, Robert Prince,Mark Walsh and Laurie Coppins won on 363, 10ahead of the South Island team. The Glenn Cupteam was selected from the top five shootersand the team was Brendan Malcolm, RobertPrince, Laurie Coppins, Ray Everett and BostonWalker. This team will shoot against Australiaon Friday. The South Island Junior team, whichit must be said included two Ladies, defeatedthe North Island team 216 to 211. Congratulations to William Rooney,Jess Sutherland and Brittany Pilcher. There was a fair amount of ribbingat the prize giving over this. The North Island Veterans team of KeithLivingstone, Graham Geater and Graeme Williams was just too strongfor the South Island team shooting 219 to 207. Geoff Wells from Kilwellassisted at the presentations and presented the winning teams withtheir Buck Knives. The other event for the day was the Grouse Trophy. 2012 prOVincialssouthland3-4 December 2011Hosted By the Mataura ClayTarget Club. The last two paragraphs of theSouthland Provincial report weremissed off the report in the lastGunshot. This was an error on mypart as I failed to copy the secondpage of the report submitted by theclub. Please accept my apologiesfor this. Below is the full report thatshould have been printed.Adrienne SearsSaturday arrived and the MatauraClay Target Club Club went down to theSouthland Clay Target Club to host theSouthland Provincial Championships. Thisunique ground sharing arrangement hasbeen in place since 1978 and is the resultof an unresolved relocation issue betweenthe Mataura Clay Target Club and theNZCTA Council of that era. The Southlandchampionships are rotated between all fourSouthland Clubs.Saturday has arrived and off down tothe Southland Clay Target Club for theSouthland Provincials. While it is a somewhatunique agreement, the Mataura club hashosted the Championships for our turn atthe Southland Clay Target Club since 1978.This came about by the Mataura club beingrequested to shift to the Island ground(Southland) by the council at the time. Both clubs have had regular contactover the past few months and have hada meeting two weeks before the start toensure everything is in place.9am Saturday and everything is in place, traps are all set, weather is ideal and all weare are waiting for is ……….Yep you guessed it, shooters to assemble. As always Skeet is up first with Double Riseon Trap one at the same time. Following onto Minis and then Single Rise to completethe day – hope the shoot offs don’t take toolong.Skeet all completed and we have someshoot offs to complete, the most notablebeing all four, five man teams tied on119/125. HOA to Ewen Pirie after a shoot off,two man teams to Ewen and Clark Pirie withthe perfect 50 and the five man team wentto Kelvin Gutsell, Hamish Bell, Clark Pirie,David Diack and Boston Walker.Double Rise required a shoot off withWilliam Rooney taking it from Hamish Bell, both with a perfect 20. It was in this matchthat we first saw young Juvan Diack gettinga place in C grade. Juvan has been shootingsince early July and is only 10. I understandhe is too young to actually compete as aschool shooter, but I am sure we will see lotsof Juvan in the future.Minis were shot on traps 3 & 4, withDamian Briggs taking the honours in thisevent after the obligatory shoot off. Infact over the weekend a large amount ofshoot offs were required. I guess this wasall because of our wonderful Southlandweather we turned on for our visitors.Single Rise was shot on all four DTL traps. And if you didn’t shoot a possible in A gradeit was time to put your gun away for the day.But for the thirty A grade shooters and OneB Grade Shooter, well done Paul Johansen, that did, it was off to the traps for the shootoff.8.30am Sunday, once again all is inplace, traps set, previous day’s weatherhas returned and the shoot off is ready tostart, one Squad on trap one remains andit keeps going and going and…. Who sayswe don’t throw great targets in Southland?Eventually Ray Everett and Natalie Rooneymissed the same target and had to shootagain for the 3rd A grade. After 460 shootoff targets a winner was decided, withKelvin Gutsell taking the honours from BradWarnock. I understand Brad finished a longrun in excess of 650 targets and Kelvin is stillgoing after over 500 targets and shootingall his Points Score targets. While the shoot off was continuing ontrap one we started the day with the Tripleson traps 2,3 & 4. HOA was Brad Warnock, having interrupted the Single Rise shoot offto complete the event.Points Score also was run on the threetraps as the Single Rise shoot off continued.Honours here were taken by Ray Everett, once again after a shoot off. Club Teamwent to Southland 1, Lyndsay Maxwell,Phil Harraway, Michael Dobbie and StuartSutherland with a team score of 299.On to the last event, Single Barrel, with allfour traps back in use again to speed this upa bit. HOA was taken by Tegan Sutherland, once again a shoot off was required. All that was left was the presentationsand High Gun. Surprisingly after such fineshooting and great weather no shoot offswere required here. HOA went to DanielWarnock on 231, A Grade to Grant Harrisonon 228, B Grade to Gareth Price on 214, CGrade to Chris Sinclair on 198. Ladies wentto Jan Manson on 218, Juniors, WilliamRooney on 224 and Vets to Ewen Pirie on227.Speight’s and Borthwick Shields wereboth won by Southland provincial teamsThe Mataura Club would like to thankthe Southland Clay Target Club for the useof their grounds to stage this event. As I saidearlier it is a partnership that has worked24 gunshot

well since 1978.In recent weeks, prior to this year’sProvincials, we were advised by councilthat we will not be allowed to run anotherProvincial on the Southland Grounds. Tome it is totally ludicrous that a club thathas a proven record of hosting Provincial,Island, National, and Oceania and in factis one of only three clubs in New Zealandto have hosted a World Clay TargetChampionship with over 400 shooters isseen to be incapable of hosting a ProvincialChampionship. The Mataura Clay TargetClub has a proud record of hosting ProvincialChampionships and large Sporting ClayShoots and of the returns we put into allcodes of the sport we all enjoy. How manyother clubs in New Zealand have convertedtheir Ball Trap into a Double Trap? I certainlyhope that council and councillors reviewtheir decision and carry out consultationwith all clubs involved instead of acting likea big bulldozer and just pushing changesthrough no matter what. Finally I would like to thank Jan, Michael,Marianne and Amanda for all their help inthe office, the Ladies in the Kitchen, BarStaff, and to all the Mataura and Southlandmembers and everyone else that came andshot for helping make this shoot the successthat it was.It may have been the last Provincialsthat the Mataura Clay Target Club will beallowed to run but we all certainly gave itour best effort, just like we will give it ourbest effort to ensure we retain our positionin the Southland Provincial Host Club roster.Warren Ayers,President, Mataura Clay Target ClubReply from NZcta:Firstly on behalf of the NZCTA I would liketo pass on our thanks and congratulations tothe Mataura Clay Target Club on conductinga very successful and well run SouthlandProvincial Championships in conjunctionwith the Southland Clay Target Club. Yourefforts were appreciated by all the shooterswho attended along with the NZCTA whoyou conducted this event on behalf of.Just to clarify the NZCTA executive'sposition on the situation you have outlinedabove; NZCTA rules are specific in thatthere are specific “Provincial GradedGrounds” within most Provincial districtsand Provincial Championships must beconducted on these grounds, the rules alsopreclude other clubs within these areaswho do not hold a Provincial grading fromconducting these events. The logic and reasons behind this rule(which was put in place by very astuteprevious executive members) is that for anyclub to get their grounds up to a “provincialgrading standard” that club has to expendlarge sums of money developing andinvesting in equipment. On-going, theseclubs need a regular income from theseevents so they can put the money back intothe facility to maintain it to the requiredstandards so that it is there ready for theirnext allocation of the said “Provincial Event”.Similar principals are applied to Island andNational Grounds. It should also be pointed out that justbecause a club gets itself up to any of therequired standards for grading there is noguarantee that they will be allocated theevents or status. Again this is in place toprotect the existing graded clubs from beingput in a position of losing their opportunityto maintain the facility and their economicviability. There are some situations aroundNZ where there are not suitably gradedgrounds conducting Provincials but this isin special circumstances where there are noother Graded grounds within the Provincecapable of holding the event. In this casethe NZCTA executive makes an allocation toa suitable club to host the event as requireduntil such time as there are suitable groundsgraded and available.I am not 100% sure but I imagine thiswas probably the case when Mataurawere originally allocated the rotation tohold this event previously, (no individualcould enlighten me why this allocationhad continued, while actual Provincialand Island Graded grounds existed in theSouthland Province for so long). We, the NZCTA executive, have nowfollowed the intent of our own rules andput in place future allocations to gradedgrounds. This by no means implies that Matauradid anything other than an admirable jobin the past. But this will just ensure that theSouthland clubs with grade facilities canmaintain their grading for the future. On behalf of the shooters of theSouthland Province and NZ we the NZCTAwould acknowledge and thank the MatauraClub for their support and efforts on behalfof the shooters of NZ and wish them well forthe future.Gavin SearleSouth Island Vice President, NZCTA. ■long run awards• 50 DTL – N. national ChampionshipsCompetitors enjoyed great conditions over the week 7 to 12February at Waikato and while this did not transfer to great scoresfor the field in general some did produced excellent results.Adding to the event flavour was a number of Australian visitors, who enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere provided bythe hosts. One of the younger Australian visitors, Laetisha Scanlon, willbe one to watch in the future. She displayed sound technique topost an impressive result and comfortably despatched most malecompetitors in the North Island Championship. Great shootingwas also demonstrated by Brett Dunstan including running 25single barrel in the Nationals final closing out any challenge thatmay have come from the field. The inaugural Glenn Shield was competed for. This event wasestablished to foster ISSF competition between Australia andNew Zealand and was modelled on the successful the Glenn Cupand Trophy format. The event will be competed for in alternatecountries at the ISSF Nationals. This year it was the Australian teamof B.Dunstan, F.Macini and D.DiPietro who took the coveted trophyby one point on 344. The New Zealand team of Alan Sinclair, MylesBrowne-Cole and Gavin Paton were chosen on a first past the postsystem on the scores from the North Island championships andtheir team score was 343.Thanks to Chris Robinson, Gavin Paton, Brant Woodward andIan Hovenden for assisting with administrating the event. Results are as followsNorth Island Double Trap HOA T Turner (Aust) 129+39=168 , AGrade 1st P Goodwin 125+37=162, 2nd R Tucker 112+41=153, 3rdT Truss 97+43=140,New Zealand Double Trap HOA T Turner (Aust) 125+43= 168, AGrade 1st R Tucker 116+40=156, 2nd T Truss 108+39=147, B Grade1st B Smith 105+33=138, 2nd Chris Robinson 85+27=112North Island Skeet Open HOA after a shoot off K Ferguson115+23=138, A Grade 1st P Adams (Aust) 116+22=138, 2nd PWilson 114+23=137, 3rd G Taylor (Aust) 112+22=134, Ladies 1st(after a shoot off) A van Bysterveldt 53+23=76 , 2nd C Tipple54+22=76New Zealand Skeet HOA G Taylor (Aust) 115+24=139, A Grade1st (after a shoot off) G Jukes 114+21=135, 2nd K Fergusson112+23=135, 3rd P Adams (Aust) 113+21=134, C Grade and Ladies1st C Tipple 61+20=81, 2nd A van Bysterveldt 55+18=73,Two day Skeet High Gun P Adams (Aust)North Island Trap HOA B Dunstan (Aust after 11 target shootoff)120+24=144, A Grade 1st L Scanlon (Aust)120+24=144, 2ndG Paton 117+21=138, 3rd M Brown-Cole 119+18=137, B Grade1st A Brogden 108, 2nd T Fuller 106, 3rd J Hillock 103, Ladies1st L Scanlon 71+24=95, 2nd N Rooney 63+20=83 3rd T Burke63+19=82, Junior J Norwood 110.New Zealand Trap HOA B Dunstan (Aust) 117+25=142, A Grade1st Di Pietro (Aust) 115+22=137, 2nd G Paton 115+21=136, 3rdA Sinclair 116+18=134, B Grade 1st and 1st Veteran J Hillock 102,2nd D Muggeridge 100, 3rd A Brogden 95, Juniors J Norwood111,. Please specify who is standing leftto right when looking at the photo. It is customary to have the 2ndplaced person on the left, the 1st placed person in the middle andthe 3rd placed person on the right. When taking photos please getup close to the subject and fill the frame with the people. Colourprints (not negatives) are required. Please do not send photos thatyou require back. I suggest you get an extra set printed if yourequire a copy of these. (Special exceptions can be made in thecase of obituaries, but please advise us that the photo is requiredto be returned and include an addressed, stamped envelope forthis purpose). Do not crop the photos in any way.DigitalWhen sending photos by email please send them as “TIFF” or“JPEG” files. Tiff files are higher resolution and will reproducemuch better than jpeg files when printed in the Gunshot. Pleasemake sure those in the photo are clearly identified. I suggestthat you name the photo what it is e.g. B grade Single Rise 213.The 213 would refer to the placings (2nd, 1st, 3rd) when lookingat the photo. The number of photos depends on the type ofshoot and how much space is available when the magazine isput together. As a rule of thumb it would be normal to send upto 10-12 photos (with different people in them if possible) foreach major shoot like a Provincial. Club Trophy shoots shouldhave about 6-8 photos. Normally you would include a photo ofwhoever won the High Gun or HOA and a selection among thegrades and events. Not all photos sent in may be printed.continued on page 40gunshot 35

Sebastian Averill with his prize winningdraw being congratulated by the clubcaptain Shane AshforthDuck Shooters' Theme Dayat the Patangata Clay Target ClubBeing a non-shooter, it was with a mixtureof curiosity and the expectation of a long daythat I attended the annual pre duck shootingopportunity for non-members and membersat the Patangata Clay Target Club on EasterSunday.I accompanied my three sons aged 12, 14,and 15. Only their father had a license, theboys had not had much opportunity for firingguns, and a license holder had to stand by thenon-licensees at all times when in the firingbox.I expected, to be perfectly honest, a dullishday of mostly waiting, while standing arounda single clay launcher wearing earplugs andshooting nothing but photos as everybodytook turns firing. After all, how many peoplecan a small area safely hold while they fireshotguns at small pink frisbees? What I found was a highly organised, well synchronised set of 6 firing stations in aprecise, large semi-circle with all the shootingfiring spread 200m apart. At each stationthere were between two and three launchersset at varied speeds and angles, so sometimestwo clays passed the shooter at duck speedsfor the double shot. No gun could be loadedwith more than 2 shells, ammo was $12 perJane Dunkerley lines up a clay.Henry Warren assuming the stance, andsaying “pull”box of 25, and teams were made up on arrivaland moved together from station to station.Burgers, baking and cups of tea and coffeewere available throughout the day.One thing that really impressed me wasthe safety aspect. The current shooter (perteam of 6) had to stand in a small (about 1msquare ) wood frame lying on the ground andpoint the gun through a white gutter pipesquare which effectively limited the range ofgun waving for those less aware of what theywere holding.A rather astonishing sight was a veryrelaxed quail sitting on a fencepost quiteclose to the firing background. At first Ithought it must be an ironic decoy placed bya club member with a sense of humour, untilits head moved and it ruffled its feathers.I suppose it was checking out anyone itneeded to be wary of once duck (and quail)season opens. I suspect we gave it no worries. Also on hand were the launchers whowere old hands, and long standing licenseeswho were very willing to help those lessexperienced, including myself, succeed withfreely given tips. Our gun was a cheaper pump actionmodel, which, while looking dramatic in theWilliam Warren works the pump action.Jack Warren, aged 12, the youngestcompetitor, being given tips on how toload and stand by a club expert RichardDermer. He was using his own gun to helpthe youngster.movies was slower when two shots wereneeded to be fired per “pull”. Sometimes thisneeded to be fast for the single clay if thefirst shot missed, and very few of our pumpaction second shots got the target due to there-aiming required.Skills ranged throughout the day fromNew Zealand representatives, to goodamateurs such as Jane Dunkerley, the onlywoman competitor. Keen duck shooters andcomplete novices all having a go. Everyonemissed clays, everyone hit clays. I was luckyenough to be loaned a very nice automaticgun from long standing member Roy Fraser, for my one and only foray on the last stationof the day which offered what I called stalleddinner plates for me to pulverize. It was a verysatisfying feeling. At lunchtime the boys enthusiasticallystripped down our busy gun to clean itout and got stuck reassembling the pumpmechanism. It had a tricky internal leverthat had to be pressed before returning to auseable position. Luckily expert Dave Hernwas available to complete reassembly. The prize lineup was amazing. It wasmostly sponsored, I think from a guy calledDave who owns a local fishing and shootingoutfit and was about $5000 worth. Every tablein the clubhouse was pulled into operation tosupport the goodies. What I liked was thateveryone had an equal chance of winning aprize at the end of the day, as they were alldrawn out of a hat. Jack scored a great Jacket,as did Wills, and Henry got a hat, head torchand Hunting knife (very sharp and compact)combo. While I hate to start with anapology, for those who read the last editionof Gunshot you will know that the correctresponse to the question about referees’actions when a shooter leaves the squadwas in fact C, not D. The wording was correct; it wasjust the letter which I had wrong. My apologies. The Nationals went off pretty well as expected. We hadfour seasons in the week, but there was little rain. The windmade up for it. Southerlies, Nor’Westers, Nor’easterlies all tooktheir toll with targets up and down, but on the whole, the targetpresentation could not have been any better. Traps were setaccurately every morning and were probably the most reliable Ican remember. Very little trap maintenance was needed as it allhad been done in a timely fashion before it became critical.Target distance setting is a relatively simple task which can bemade extremely difficult by people who should know better. Atarget that is thrown from a worn or shiny arm rubber will nothave the same amount of spin as one from a well maintained armor blade. Gyroscopic rigidity is that force which maintains thetarget in the same plane whilst spinning. This force is proportionalto the diameter, the mass and the RPM of the target. As the targetmass and the diameter are specified in the rules, the only factorthat can influence the stability of a target is the speed of rotation. This is solely derived from contact with the rubber arm or blade ofthe trap. If the rubber is worn or has gone old and hard, the targetwill not get the spin, and the trap will need much more spring toreach the required distance. Well maintained traps throw bettertargets. It is as easy as that. Look after the rubber on the arm, andyou will get better consistency. The targets thrown at Christchurchwere proof of that. I must also mention the performance by GavinSearle who not only efficiently ran the National event but alsocame away with the High Gun. Very well done. There were a number of people who sat the referees' examinationand were awarded their referees badges by our President, KeithLivingstone. I still have a couple of outstanding papers to mark, butI now have some extra assistance from the Bay of Plenty Referees'examiner, Jim Dobson. Jim is a well-seasoned referee who has adesire to see everyone shooting under the same rules and everyclub presenting the same targets. Jim has also volunteered tobe the point of contact for the World DTL referees at Hamiltonin 2014. Jim will assist in developing a specific DTL Points Scorereferees' test to enable more people to assist refereeing at theworlds. Good on ya mate. The Annual Mackintosh Event Rules: What allreferees need to be aware of:After the Nationals every year, we have the Mackintosh trophyshoot. This event has been going for some time, and while theshooting world has been evolving, some of the practices attachedto the Mackintosh have not. I threatened to draft a set of rulesfor the Mackintosh and publish them, but we are having a littletrouble getting agreement from one of the competing nations. However, NZCTA has a set of rules which are based on fair play andare in the intent of the original procedures and wewill stick to these. Background:The Mackintosh trophy is awardedannually to the top scoring team fromEngland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland,Wales, South Africa, Canada, Australia and NewZealand. The event is a postal shoot, where eachteam is selected and the targets are shot at each country’snational tournament at different times of the year. The scoresare sent to the Australian association (ACTA) for compilation andeventual announcement of the annual winner.History:Up to and during the early 1980’s, Australia and New Zealandthrew targets to 45 degrees left and right of centre, where allother competing nations threw much narrower targets; 22degrees left and right of centre being typical. NZ and Australiaalso predominantly shot handicap by distance, any common markshooting back then being performed at either 16 or 18 yards. Thus, for equity of competition with the Northern Hemisphere, NZand Australia created a set of “Mackintosh Rules” where the targetsetting was reduced to 22 degrees, the target distance reducedfrom 55 to to 50 yards, and the event was shot as points score, shooting 5 targets per lane. This “Mackintosh format” was quiteunique in NZ until we adopted the three grade common markformat of shooting some 30 plus years ago. As the shooting formatwas so different from normal, the New Zealand and Australianrules permitted each shooter to shoot one target across the lanesbefore the event to introduce shooters to this “uncommon” format. The difference being that the targets were “softer” and you wereshooting from a different mark. (At one stage, we actually shot off17 yards because of confusion over the metric equivalents.)The faCTs today:The reality is that the rules of each country today are so similarthat nobody requires a special set of rules to ensure equitablecompetition between member countries. Target height is alreadyat the norm for each country, the shooting distance is standardizedat 15 meters (or 16 yards), and all countries except Canada throwa 22.5 degree maximum angle target, (plus 10 degrees allowancefor windage.) Canada and ATA countries throw a 17 degree target;but they also only fire one shot at each target, and there is aconversion applied to their score to make things more “equal”.The sole remaining consideration is the target distance. CPSArules as used by England, Ireland, N. Ireland, Scotland, Wales,South Africa and New Zealand require a 48 m target, +/-2 meters.Australia is 46m +/-2 m. It is understood that Canada use the ATArules for shooting, the target throwing distance being 50 Yards+/- 1 yard (45.7m +/- 0.9 m). The table below shows a comparison(using metric distances for consistency). If the rules simplypermitted each nation to throw a normal target a normal distanceat a normal height all would be equitable. This is a rule amendmentwe are trying to get agreement on, but it is not a change for NewZealand or any of the Northern Hemisphere countries.gunshot 37

Comparison of target height measurements betweencountries.Trajectory shown is only typical. As anybody who has thrown afrisbee knows, the gyroscopic effect has a huge impact on targetflight. The greater the spin, the less effort is required to throwthe disc to a distance. This diagram is provided to show that thesame “legal” target thrown in Australia, NZ or the UK will meet therequirements of the CPSA and that no special setting is needed.Heights and distances are nominal as shown in the table above.Tolerance allows 300mm deviation for UK, and 500mm deviationfor Australia and NZ at the height pegs. NZ has the tightestspecification for target height. I guess that would be because ofour proximity to the ocean and the wind that goes with it. If weadopted the CPSA (UK/South Africa) method, we would haveabout a one meter tolerance either up or down on a target at thehalf way point. In conclusionNZCTA has embraced the rules normally used by England,Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and South Africa asthe rules for the Mackintosh event. This way, we all remain in linewith the guiding statement from the Mackintosh trophy event….”General: Each country to ensure that the rules of common senseand fair play are adhered to at all times. No unfair advantage is tobe taken owing to the competition being a postal team’s match.”NZCTA will honour that requirement. So really, there are only a few old habits to beware of for theMackintosh.• It is no longer shot under any “special” conditions.• It is shot under CPSA International Points Score rules – sameas NZ points score• Traps may be brought in to set hard angles at 22 degrees leftand right. (1/2 a degree)• A target flying up to 10 degrees outside the 22 degree angleis still legal, unless called by the referee before shooter fires.• NZCTA height, distances and angles for targets comply withall the CPSA requirements• There is no eye opener before the match. Once a squad takesthe mark, they are under competition conditions.• Referees should remain on their allocated trap, and not travelwith a squad.• Only one referee is required for each trap. “No targets” arecalled by the referee only.Well, that’s another round completed. Please check your guns andscores, and please email me any questions or situations you wouldlike clarified.Regards, Blue38 gunshot

Maintaining your Canterbury WOODVILLEVoice Release System – wireless TARGET PRODUCTSSPONSORED SHOOT AT WOODVILLEWhile the wireless voice release system isrelatively new, it has in fact been in use forover 6 years and clubs should be ensuringthey maintain it in as good condition aspossible. Hopefully the following helpfulpoints will assist you in getting the bestperformance from it and reduce the potentialfor repair costs.1. It's important that you remember at alltimes that this equipment is based onelectronics and should be treated withas much care and attention as you wouldtreat a lap top computer. While it hasbeen designed to withstand the harshoutdoor environment of a gun club, it stillneeds to be treated with care. So please:• a. Refrain from dropping any of thetransceivers. The referee’s remote ismost susceptible to this and note asuggestion later in this article.• b. Be aware of moisture problems– especially with regard the referee’sremote - as the microphone and basestation units are all held in an uprightposition, which allows them to shedwater. The remote is often left lying flat, which may allow water seepage. Makesure that the locking screws are securelytightened on the pods, so that the jointis waterproof and if the rubber seals areshowing any signs of damage, then newones would be advisable.• c. Do not use undue force whenopening or closing the wireless pods. The locking screws should be ‘fingertight’ only.2. Ensure the system is correctly set upaccording to the manual. NOTE thatincorrect tuning of the channel andmicrophones is the major cause ofmalfunction of the system. If you havelost the manual, then download a copyfrom the CVR website.3. It would be best to allocate one personin the club to be responsible for the voicerelease sets, so that they ensure the setsare all tuned correctly, batteries are up todate, and watch for any components thatmay be require repairs.4. Batteries. The source and brand ofbattery you use will have a major bearingon the performance of your unit. We havefound that the bulk packs of Dick Smithbatteries, as well as being cheaper thanother major brands, perform extremelywell. Replace ALL batteries at a set date.Do not replace just some batteries in aset or some batteries that seem to be lowin output – this will not be a cost savingmeasure at all. So, when you changebatteries, throw away all the old onesregardless of whether some of them arestill working.5. Keep a chart, or record of some sort, when you change batteries. We wouldrecommend that you change all thebatteries just before your biggest yearlyshoot. That way you know everythingis good for the big shoot and it is aneasy yearly reminder of when to dothis change out. Reports are that somesmaller clubs can easily go a full year onone set of batteries whilst larger clubsgo 6 months on a full set. If you are notgetting at least 6 months use out of yourbatteries then change the brand!6. Do not over tighten the locking collarson all cable connectors. These shouldonly be finger tight and never use apair of pliers, spanner or other tool totighten these collars. Once the cables areconnected there should be no need toremove them again.7. If you do not have a set position for thereferee’s remote to be held in, then aplastic bracket for down-pipes is theexact size to fit this pod. Attaching thebracket to the front of your ref’s stand, soit faces the trap house, will give it perfecttransmission direction and also keep itsafe from potentially being dropped onto the ground.8. If you appear to be getting ‘slow’ targetsthen don’t forget that there is a switchinside the trap pod that allows you toselect ‘instant’ target releases rather thanthe standard 1/6th sec delay releases.9. At the end of a day's shooting, when youput the wireless set away, please ensurethat you turn the power off at all the pods.As always, if you are unsure of why yourwireless Canterbury system may bemalfunctioning, then we can help withadvice, spare parts or undertaking repairs foryou. The cheapest thing you can do beforestarting to ‘fix’ things, is call us first to check!Don’t hesitate to contact us on 03 356 0327.Bruce Rickard – CVRSunday February 5th was a beaut day forclay target shooting and although we hadthe stock cars, National Teams Racing andWellington rugby sevens and a long weekendto compete with we thought 45 shooters wasa good turnout for our 200 target match. The program consisted of 100 DTL Single Rise,50 Point Score and 50 Single Barrel all shot in50s. Send photos separately to text and do not reduce the filesize, crop or otherwise alter the photo. Also do not add captionsto the photo itself. We are now making use of a web programme called ‘Dropbox’and it allows you to put in a large file that can be picked up atthe other end (Adrienne) without the need for email. There is norestriction on the amount of data you drop into it so ‘raw’ files ofphotos are no problem (and that’s how we like them). Taking a photo from a chair 10 metresaway from the prize giving will not get a good result. Likewise aquick shot while the subject is returning to their seat or has theirback turned to you seldom gets the desired result. The objective of taking photos of prize winners is to portray thepeople and particularly their faces, in the best possible quality.Watch for different backgrounds, including windows and sunlight.Outside is best but not always possible and the sun has a hugeinfluence on getting successful photos. A cap shading the tophalf of the face is a common problem as is squinting if the sunis directly on the face. Bright backgrounds can also influence anauto camera and the result is the people in the foreground aredarkened to compromise resulting in poor photo quality of thesubjects but a great picture of the background.Falcon Fiocchi Winners J.Manson P.Harraway. L.Rodgers, H.BellA number of clubs have floral or busy, brightly decorated curtainsthat are used as a background for photos. This is very distractingin the photo and a plain uncluttered background is much better.Taking photos inside also requires some forethought from thephotographer. In daylight make sure the window light is at yourback and not behind the subject.Use a proper camera as phones do not give us good photos. If there is a chance that the subject may be used for the Gunshotcover then special requirements are needed. Contact the NationalOffice about this. ■Falcon Fiocchi L.Johansen, G.Price40 gunshot

Southland Clay TargetClub Championships 2012We have heard many news reports about theappalling weather over much of the countrythis summer. We in the south are happy toreport that we have been blessed with thebest summer for many years. The day ofour club championships proved yet againthat Southland is a great place to live asshirtsleeves and sunscreen were very muchthe order of the day.Our club championships is a full on day. Notonly do we contest skeet and the DTL events,we also hold our Ball Trap event. With theshooters well organised by our field peopleand the kitchen well stocked to keep the innerman satisfied we had a very successful day. Inall 63 competitors were on our grounds andclubs from throughout the south were wellrepresented in the presentations.Skeet, as usual on our grounds, was shot first. This discipline has a very strong following inour area and is always a popular event. KelvinGutsell (Mataura) proved too skilful for theother five shooters who vied for the HOA.James Bonney, a visitor from South Otago, won the B Grade and David Story, a morerecent convert to clay target shooting wastops in C Grade.Good target setting was again very evidentand Double Rise also had a good numbercontesting the shoot offs for placings. LocalCub Captain Stu Sutherland received the cupfor the HOA in this event. Hamish Golden, one of our past school shooters won B Gradeand Ben Platfoot (Nightcaps), another of thesecondary school boys topped C Grade.Minis did produce some grumbles butcertainly not from Kelvin Gutsell. He yet againshowed his versatility by winning this eventoutright with the rest of the field fightingfor the remaining places. Paul Johansen(Southland) and Bradley Stewart (Nightcaps)took B and C Grade respectively.Ball trap was next on the list. Generallythe results in this event were of a veryhigh standard. The overall comment fromthose who took part in the Ball Trap wasone of enjoyment and many came off thefield having produced a very respectablescore. Mike Millard (West Otago) who hasonly recently returned to the sport headedoff Stephen Diack to be the victor and TimJackson (Te Anau) won C Grade with a fine 21.Then on to DTL. As expected in the favourableconditions the Single Rise produced animpressive number of possibles. All gradeswere represented in the shoot off and of notewas the effort of Ben Platfoot, a member ofthe Nightcaps school team who certainlygave the eventual winners a run for theirmoney. Unfortunately, as the shoot off for thisevent was the last item on the programme, the lateness of the hour determined that thelast two shooters standing, Brad Warnock andColin Waghorn both members of Gorge Road, decided the event by distance. Not ideal buta result ensued nevertheless.Points Score also produced a good number ofpossibles but the shoot off was not long lived.Gorge Road was once again top with DanielWarnock taking the HOA followed closely bySouthland members Lindsay Rodgers andPhil Harraway. In B Grade the domination bysome of the younger members was noted asAlexander Brown from Nightcaps was first inB Grade. The highlight for the Diack family wasperhaps in the Single Barrel event. Elevenyear old Juvan Diack shot a possible in thisdiscipline and went on to secure a veryrespectable first placing in C Grade after acrowd pleasing shoot off. I’m sure most werehoping for a “Cinderella” ending but it was notto be. Juvan, more commonly known as Jockwas the third last to fall. An excellent effort. As a footnote, Juvan’s Mum Andrea had avery good day's shooting also. Mother andson shared the podium in C grade, Juvan firstand Andrea third. I’m sure this is an unusualoccurrence and will long be remembered byall concerned. The Champion of Champions was wonoutright but narrowly by Kelvin Gutsell. Yetanother notch on the belt for you Kelvin, congratulations. We were happy to applaudPhil Harraway’s win in A Grade and after aconsistent effort Paul Johansen proved thebest in B Grade. Tim Jackson from the Te Anauclub, a quiet but determined competitorproudly took home the C Grade High Gun.Well done to you all.Skeet A Grade 25’s L Rodgers, B Walker, DDiack, K Gutsell, P McGowan, R Craigie. It was advised thatthis subcommittee comprises Gavin Searle(Canterbury) David Muggeridge (Waikato)and the Executive Officer. They will belooking at the portion of the shoot leviesthat goes back to the NZCTA vs the club. The two National grounds feel this has gotout of balance but any decision is still sixmonths away. Council has worked to put inplace a system to track costs/income for thevarious disciplines from the levy paymentsreceived from clubs. Having justification tosend a Skeet team to America can now bejustified via tracking our income streams.Grant Castles mentioned that the DTLNorth/South entry fee had increased in thelast year and Skeet has become an event inits own right.Kevin Ellison asked if the Executive hasgiven any thought to Postal Entries formajor tournaments. It was advised that thishas been looked at and is being continuallymonitored but shifts the workload for thehost club to on the day when there is staffavailable to increasing the workload forthe preceding months out and the hostclubs have to be prepared to take this on.It was suggested that clubs could put thisto an AGM as a remit to give Council a feelfor this idea.Bill Jones asked if streamlining voting hasbeen considered. It was mentioned thatpostal voting for Remits was tried a fewyears ago and this resulted in a quorum notbeing reached for the AGM. Voting at theAGM also gave members an opportunityto speak about issues that concerned themand gives Council valuable feedback frommembers and clubs.Grant Castles asked if the Hall of Famecould be on-line rather than in a building. At present the web site is being up datedbut this is not an ideal way of showing allthe memorabilia we have. The voting on the remits was announced.Moved Dave Hern/Ewen Pirie “That allvoting papers be destroyed.”Keith thanked everyone for attending themeeting and the work the poll clerk andScrutineer have done. The Meeting closed at 9.10pm ■2012 BerettaScholarship goes tothe Deep South...As is the norm for the Beretta JuniorScholarship, this year's entry was asstrong as it has been virtually everyyear since its inception in 2004. Whilstthe entry was small in numbers, thehigh standard made the judgingprocess very challenging, with theshort-list showing very little by wayof scoring differential. In the end, the judging panel madeup of Gavin Searle, Gavin Paton,Ewen Pirie and the writer was able toagree on naming Hamish Bell fromthe Nightcaps Clay Target Club as the2012-14 Beretta Junior Scholarshiprecipient.Hailing from the metropolis ofDipton, Hamish has been showinggreat promise over the last couple ofyears and went close to winning theScholarship last year. Being equallyproficient across both the DTL andSkeet disciplines, Hamish has a verybright future in the sport and hasalready shown the commitment anddedication to clay target shootingthat it takes to reach the very top. Heis also a very personable young manwho will represent the Beretta namewell during his Scholarship tenure. The 2012 NZ DTL Championshipsjustified Hamish's appointment asbeing the right choice for the Berettabrand, via a consistent performanceacross the week; 3rd in the Handicapby Distance Championship, 3rd AA inthe Triples and to top off the week,he was the AA High Gun across thechampionships and was selected forthe NZ Open Mackintosh team.NIGHTCAPS CLAYTARGET CLUBRomco Skeet 100 TgtsTrophy Match9 June 2012 9.30 amWest Otago North/South QualifyingAs part of the Beretta JuniorScholarship, Hamish receives a newBeretta 682E multi-choked shotgun,Beretta clothing and accessories, ammunition and via the NZ ClayTarget Association's commitment tothe Scholarship with Beretta NZ, alsoreceives a coaching programme anda fund administered by the NZCTAfor travel and on-going ammunitionsupply.
