ADHESION TO EXTERNALVOLUNTARY INITIATIVESThe progress made during its route to sustainability hasconfirmed and consolidated the belief within the Groupthat competitiveness is fundamentally linked not onlyto ethical sensitivity but also to social involvement andrespect for the environment. As proof of this belief, inrecent years the <strong>Generali</strong> Group has adhered to variousvoluntary social and environmental initiatives.In 2007, <strong>Generali</strong> signed up toUN Global Compact, a voluntaryUN initiative that encouragescompanies worldwide tocreate an economic, socialand environmental frameworktargeted at promoting a healthyand sustainable global economy,which ensures everyone has thechance to share its benefits.As a participant the Group is therefore committed toembracing, supporting and applying, within its spheresof influence, a set of ten fundamental principles in theareas of human rights, labour standards, environmentalprotection and the fight against corruption. They enjoyuniversal consensus and are derived from the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights, the International LabourOrganisation's Declaration, the Rio Declaration and theUnited Nations Convention Against Corruption.The <strong>Generali</strong> Group annually notifies its stakeholders ofthe activities implemented and the results obtained inrelation to the ten principles through the Communicationon Progress (COP). This tool is integrated in the GRIcontent index attached to this document.The Global Compact supports the creation of localnetworks to promote the initiative and its principles ina country or specific geographic region. Therefore, the<strong>Generali</strong> Group adheres to the Global Compact NetworkItalia, as part of which it collaborates as a member of theSteering Committee and work groups on human rightsand on sustainability reporting.In May 2011, the<strong>Generali</strong> Group signedup to the Principles forResponsible Investment(PRI), a UN initiative created to support investors inimplementing the six principles, which commits themto incorporating social, environmental and governanceparameters in the assessment of investments. Adhesiongrants access to a network that supports investors througha sharing of best practices, facilitating collaborationbetween signatories and offering the chance to participatein a multitude of activities and working groups.In 2009, the <strong>Generali</strong>Group was accreditedas an OrganisationalStakeholder as part of the Global <strong>Report</strong>ing Initiative(GRI), a multi-stakeholder organisation which developsthe sustainability reporting framework most widely usedat global level by companies of all sizes and industries.Those standards are also adopted by the <strong>Generali</strong> Groupwhen drafting its <strong>Sustainability</strong> <strong>Report</strong>. In <strong>2012</strong>, the<strong>Generali</strong> Group continued to actively follow developmentsin the new version of the guidelines (G4), participating inworkshops and webinars organised by GRI on the matter,and expressing its point of view through appropriatelydrafted questionnaires.The Group has participatedin the Integrated <strong>Report</strong>ingPilot Programme promotedby the International Integrated<strong>Report</strong>ing Council (IIRC)since <strong>2012</strong>, with the objectiveof creating a structure thatorganisations can use to report in a single documentsignificant financial and non-financial information, onstrategy, governance, performance and medium/longtermprospects, taking into account the commercial,social and environmental context in which they operate.In 2009, the <strong>Generali</strong> Groupsigned the Kyoto Statement ofthe Geneva Association, assuminga series of common commitmentsregarding the measures to adoptto tackle and reduce climatechange. The Geneva Associationis an international not-for-profitassociation for economic insurance studies, dealing withthe identification of fundamental trends and strategicmatters in which insurance plays a key role or which affectthe insurance industry, in order to understand them andspread awareness. <strong>Generali</strong> participates with all majorcompanies of the sector, along with the Group CEO.In 2010, the <strong>Generali</strong>Group also signedthe CDP, an initiativecommitted to tacklingthe challenges relatingto climate change and to limiting its scope through theadoption of eco-sustainable conduct. for a total of 87,000 billion dollars of assets managed. Itprovides investors sensitive to climate change matterswith information on the strategies adopted and theenvironmental performance of the companies in whichthey invest, or intend to invest, collected through anextremely articulated questionnaire sent once a year tothe major listed companies of all sectors of businessworldwide.In January 2011, the <strong>Generali</strong> Group also signed the CDPWater Disclosure, a similar initiative whose objective isto collect information on the water management of themajor companies who use water intensively, to makeit available to the market and direct investments atcompanies who use water sustainably.
