at a glanceENVIRONMENT ANDCLIMATE CHANGEIn recent years, the Generali Group has commenced a process to strengthenits commitment in the various areas of social responsibility, by extending itscommitment to the environment. As proof of this, the Environmental Policyof the Generali Group was defined, a document approved by the Boardof Directors of the Parent Company, which sets out the objectives Generaliintends to pursue and the commitments it undertakes to ensure environmentalprotection, prevent pollution and contribute to sustainable development. The objectives and commitments outlined refer to both direct environmentalimpacts, resulting from the Group’s insurance and financial activities, and toindirect impacts, related to procurement activities, the planning and distributionof insurance and financial products and to institutional investment activities. To implement the contents of the Policy, in 2009, the Group put into effectan Environmental Management System (EMS), as part of which specifictargets were defined, which the countries involved in the EMS are committedto reaching in the 2010-2012 three-year period. After checking the resultsobtained at the end of 2012, new environmental objectives were establishedin the first few months of 2013, to be achieved in the 2013-2015 three-yearperiod.The correct implementation of the EMS and the specific achievement of theobjectives are ensured by regular monitoring and by an internal informationsystem, which provides half-yearly reports and a report called the Inventoryof greenhouse gas emissions of the Generali Group in which, with referenceto the EMS, the Group’s greenhouse gas emissions are quantified, analysedand reported in a clear, detailed and transparent manner. In order to makethe data published more credible, the Group asked the Certification BodyRINA Services S.p.A. to certify, in accordance with ISO standard 14064-1, theInventory of greenhouse gas emissions for 2012 too.ENERGYPAPER90.8%ecologicalpaper9.2%non-ecologicalpaper77.9%electricity quotefrom renewablesources22.1%electricity quotefrom non-renewablesourcesThe activities which are most affected by the environmental policies are themanagement of buildings, purchasing, information technology and, as faras mobility is concerned, the management of human resources; projects, measures and actions of various types are implemented within this domain, aimed at contributing to the achievement of the targets and objectives set.85,082CO 2 e greenhousegas emission% distributionof greenhousegas emission49.8% electricity12.9% thermal energy37.3% corporate mobility18 | Assicurazioni Generali - Sustainability Report 2012
