In order to develop a more extensive database on whichto base decisions regarding areas for improvement, thegeneral objective of extending the scope of environmentalaccountability, both in terms of countries/companies andindicators, was also established. The performances were good in all areas apart from waterconsumption and the increase in the amount of separatelycollected waste. It wasn’t possible to meet the firstobjective because of the various leaks in the pipes at somesites in previous years, whilst the second objective wasn’tmet because the significant improvement in the gatheringof data regarding the mixed waste collection, which wasgreater than the increase in separately collected waste, had a negative effect on the overall figure. In the first months of 2013, following the verification of theresults attained in the first three years of environmentalmanagement, new objectives and targets were set forthe 2013-2015 three-year period. The 2010-2012 objectives and targets were met thanks tothe various initiatives launched, which are contained in theGroup Environmental Programme. This programmeoutlines the specific objectives and targets that everycountry in the EMS has committed to meeting in order tocontribute to achieving the Group’s objectives and targets.in relation to the objectives of the EMS. Checks werealso made on the existence and effectiveness of theprocess of transposing the EMS objectives defined atGroup level, particularly as regards the phase of definingthe actions to be taken to meet these goals. The correct implementation of the EMS and the specificmeeting of its objectives are guaranteed by periodicmonitoring and an information system that produces sixmonthlyreports and an annual report entitled Inventoryof greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the GeneraliGroup which, with reference to the EMS, quantifies, analyses and accounts for the Group’s GHG emissionsin a clear, detailed and transparent way. In 2012 theCertification Body RINA Services S.p.A. awarded theGroup certification, in accordance with the ISO14064-1 standard, for its GHG emissions Inventorywith regard to direct emissions (Scope1) and indirectemissions from energy consumption (Scope2) relating to2011; the same certification has already been requestedfrom this external body for the 2012 emissions Inventory. For more information on the Inventory and theGHG emissions certification, see the websitewww.generali.com/SustainabilityThe System is supported by an organisationalstructure made up of the EMS Review Committeeand the EMS Committee. The EMS Review Committeereviews the System once a year and can follow this upby proposing changes to the Environmental Policy, to theGroup’s objectives and targets, and to other elements ofthe EMS, in line with its goal of continuous improvement. The EMS Committee, meanwhile, is the operationalbody responsible for meeting the Group’s environmentalobjectives. It consists of the Group EMS representativeand representatives of the EMS of the individualcountries involved in the project aimed at implementingan environmental management system within the Group. The Corporate Social Responsibility department istasked with coordinating the Committees and draftingdocumentation for the System at Group level.Furthermore, in certain countries, there are nationalsupport structures which have purely environmentalresponsibilities. In 2012 the implementation of the System continuedwith the launch of the audit by the Group InternalAudit department, which verified the correct andcomplete implementation of the provisions containedin the Group’s procedures in Italy also through checkson the existence of suitable operating processes andprocedures; in this context, there was also an analysis ofthe processes implemented for the collection of the dataand information required to monitor the results achievedJoblinge, GermanyENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE | 123
