Drifting back - September 2007by Larry Wilson30 Years Ago (September 1977)Sixty-five SVR members traveled to the Garden ValleyCountry Club near Fairfield for the September 9 joint dinnermeeting with ten members of Redwood Region. The deluxe affair, arranged by club manager (and SVR member), Phillip Marks, offered golf and tennis tournaments (chaired by Bob Schleh andJoyce and Jim Karver respectively) followed by a most enjoyableevening banquet. Merle Dodd and Joyce Karver won the men’sand women’s tennis tournament, no report about the golfers. TheSeptember 10/11, Redwood-Sacramento Valley Driving School atSears Point completed the weekend for Paul Bates, Jim and SheilaMcDade, Geary and Linda Lyons, Darrel and C.C. Overstreet,Peter Bogy, Dave Neukom, and Dale Newhouse. The first tracksession went very smoothly, but the rest of the event went south, both on and off the track. Fortunately, festivities ended before itgot too terribly out of hand, and the group went to Cattlemen’sto do what they did second best - eat.SVR’s September 18 Zone 7 autocross attracted 156 driversand 40 SVR workers. Tech workers included Delores McKinnon,Larry Dunn, Jim Bonney, Leon Biren, and Kirk Bradford.Carrera de Sierra III, a two-day, September 24/25, time anddistance rally with Rik Larson as rallymaster, was still in its flowerwith 84 rally cars (including 40 PCA teams) traversing back roadson Saturday (six checkpoints) through Sonora to Yosemite Park fora banquet and overnight stay, and then three more rally legs back tothe finish in Stockton on Sunday. Workers included Al King, Lettieand Lee Larson, Phillip Marks, Larry and Pat Wilson, Mike Willis,Dave Neukom, Ray and Frankie Engle, and Rich and Gail Burke.SVR members who trophied were Jim and Joyce Karver (2nd, ExpertUnequipped), Dave Brewer (2nd Novice Equipped), Ted and DianeColbert (5th, Novice Unequipped), Barbara and John Smolich (6th,Novice Unequipped), and Ted Strutz (10th, Novice Unequipped).20 Years Ago (September 1987)The September Drifter cover featured a nice shot of RichMcGlumphy in autocross action with his 914-6. That issue alsopictured Fred Siegner putting on the 18th green at RiverbendGolf and Country Club, C.C. Craig receiving his closest-to-thepin award from Shelia McDade, Ray Clements at the wheel ofhis 924 just after navigator Mike Willis got them lost on theVacaville BBQ tour, and Sally Boeck teaching Sara Clements howto stick out her tongue in response to the black flag at a GGRtime trial. Memorable days were those!Fifty-four SVR members in 27 Porsches hit five truly greatwineries during the September 13 Wine Tour by Jim McDadeand Kirk Bradford. “At the Napa Creek Winery, the fellow incharge kept giving us a bunch of full bottles after we volunteeredto help them out by pouring our own samples for tasting,” Jimsaid and added, “They kept opening, so we kept tasting.”The 1987 version of Carrera de Sierra, a two-day, September26/27, time and distance rally, with Stan Breyfogle as chairmanand John Clever as rallymaster, attracted 33 rally cars including15 cars from PCA. They left Rancho Cordova over the MormonImmigrant Trail to Mono Lake, and then to lunch in Bridgeport, and then to Lee Vining and into the back-way to Yosemite Park forthe evening barbecue under the stars. After returning the next day, they had clocked 12 hours of actual rally time. Low score for PCAentrants was Phillip Marks and D.D. King who finished 1st in ExpertUnequipped with a score of 266 seconds. Tom & Linda Gardnerwere 2nd in Beginner Class with 270 seconds. The BS tourby Randy VidmarThis story is about the first-ever BS Wine Tour, awonderfully unusual Porsche tour on June 24 th puttogether by Barbie and Sheila, hence the title. Theladies publicized this tour very well. I know because I signedup for it five times! That’s how much I wanted to go. Believeme I, and I’m sure I speak for everyone, we had a wonderfuland unforgettable time.Everyone arrived on time in Rocklin at 8:30 A.M. Therewere about twenty-five cars, and we left promptly at 9:00 A.M.The first thing I noticed was that Jim McDade was not leading. He told me this tour was planned, and test-driven no less thanthree times by Barbie and Sheila. Jim brought up the rear as thesweep car. Barbie and Sheila were in the lead in Barbie’s beautifulCarrera 4S. There were Porsches of every year and color - a trulybeautiful sight. A couple of new members were on their firsttour. After the drivers safety meeting, we took off, following thedirections - or so we thought. (Do I see a possible Dummkopfaward coming?)Fortunately for us, Barbie and Sheila didn’t follow their owndirections! We left Rocklin and headed west, making a right turninstead of a left. Now I know why Barbie and Sheila tested theroute three times. I’ve lived in Sacramento for thirty-two yearsand have never been on some of these roads. Barbie and Sheilaare true Porsche people because every road was smooth, withminimum traffic, and fun to drive. The potty stop was wellplanned and, according to some of the attendees, very timely. In fact, during this whole tour we only spent five miles on afreeway (I-5) making this is a “Porsche tour” in the truest senseof the phrase. Avoiding freeways around here is really hard todo in order to drive to anyplace, but Barbie and Sheila figuredout how to do it, and there were plenty opportunities to stretchthe “legs” of our Porsches. It must be noted that this was not a“fast” tour; in fact, speeds were just right. We toured through downtown Napa to our first destination, the Chateau Potelle Winery, nestled in the Coast Rangeon the west side of Napa and having one of the most beautifulviews facing east toward Napa. Barbie and Sheila had reservedthe awning-covered deck overlooking the valley for us to eat ourpicnic lunches. The ladies had the winery staff provide a sixbottletasting of their finest wines. It doesn’t get any better thanthis - driving our Porsches, having good food, being with goodfriends, and tasting good wine. After lunch we toured deeper into the hills. The weather wasbeautiful and sunny, and the roads were smooth. Cabriolet topswere down, and coupe sunroofs were open. At Mumm Napa, whichhas ample parking space, Barbie and Sheila had set up a special tour- not your average tour, but one conducted by Mumm’s businessmanager. Halfway through the tour we were treated to a chilledglass of fine Mumm sparkling wine. It was a truly an exceptionaltour, very well executed, and exclusively for us.It turns out there was a dubious award for my signing up forthis tour on five different occasions. I almost goofed things up forBarbie and Sheila because they had to recount the numbers fourtimes to get an accurate count for the wineries and the restaurant.Oops. We spent a lot of time in the gift shop. Maureen spent alot of time and some money, and we left late for the next stop.I was following a silver 911 and two other cars were followingme. Assuming the 911 was on the tour, I followed it when itmade a turn the others following. The driver of the 911 stoppedand told me he had left the tour and was heading home. Oopsagain. Shows to go - one should stay with the group. I got backon track, and spotted Bill Keegan’s red Turbo turning off theroad. Aha, I now had the next stop in sight, albeit a little late. Our last stop was the Frank Family Winery where we hada private tasting - the sort of thing that makes one feel special. It turns out the winery owner had been involved with MGMduring Marilyn Monroe’s time. The tasting room was filled withold photos and memorabilia of her. It seems she routinely visitedthis small and intimate winery, which is easy to miss, but wellworth the stop.Dinner was at Brix in Yountville. This is an upscale restaurantand, as do most restaurants at this level, requires a depositof $200 and $75 a plate to reserve a private room. Barbie andSheila worked their magic to get us in for only the cost of eachperson’s meal - no easy feat because most restaurants won’t makesuch an accomodation. I don’t know how they did it, but I offermy personal thanks. The full menu was made available to us andthe quality of the food was superb.I’ve been touring with SVR for twenty-two years now, andthis tour was truly exceptional. It was planned, run, tested andmanaged in the finest tradition of SVR. I want to thank Barbieand Sheila and Jim, (after all he brought up the rear, also in afine tradition), for a truly outstanding and memorable tour. It isthe untiring and dedicated efforts of members like Barbie, Sheilaand Jim that make such events available to our members. All onehas to do is show up and have fun. Thanks again for your effortsin putting this tour together. If there is another one with yournames on it, count me in.the drifter 9

Zone 7 rules at Parade 2007by Larry Sharp, Zone 7 National Representativephotos by Ron LeppkeThis years Parade report begins with the bad news: theZone 7 team failed to repeat its performance in winningthe Zone Challenge crown as it did at Portland in 2006.Our team had fun making the Neillo Porsche Dealership sandcastle, competing in the tug of war, and participating in theFrisbee contest, but our efforts were not sufficient. Still, as goodPorsche friends, we had a good time. Now for the really good news: there were three major wins byZone 7 members. Dave Darling of Loma Prieta Region had thetop score in the Porsche Design Technical and Historical Quiz, the team of J. and Jessica Toney (Sacramento Valley Region)were the overall winners of the Yokohama Tire TSD Rally, andStephan Nieslony (Sacramento Valley Region) had TTOD (toptime of day) in the Michelin Autocross.Since San Diego was the first-ever five-day Parade, finding a timefor the traditional Zone 7 party was a challenge, given the constraintsimposed by the week’s abbreviated schedule. Thanks to Ted and IngridFrench and my wife KC, we arranged to have a Mexican Fiesta onthe Saturday afternoon before the formal start of Parade. Nearly allof the Zone 7 members who arrived in San Diego early were able toattend. It was an impressive gathering, and it took place on the lawnin front of PCA President Prescott Kelly’s hotel room. The Zone 7 party; photo by Ron LeppkeAt the Porsche AG/PCNA Concours d’Elegance on Monday, many Zone 7 Members subjected their cars to rigorous inspectionby the National PCA concours judges. In the Performance Touringgroup, Paul Seidel-Smith and Nancy Bishop (LPR) won their classwith their stunning 914-6GT Jagermeister racecar. In the Preservationgroup, Paul Scheffel (MBR) won with his 1973 911T. In thebattle of almost-perfect cars, Grover (Joe) Hartman (GGR), with his1974 911 Carrera won over Ed and Jon Dugan of LPR, who were(unfortunately) forced to move up a class. Joe also won his division.Long-time Zone 7 top competitors Rick Berberich (GGR) and KenRinehart took second in class with their 1968 911L. Rich and CindyWyett (SNR) enhanced their enjoyment of their first-ever Parade byeasily walking away with a first-place trophy in the Preparation/Touringclass with Cindy’s 996. (Cindy also autocrossedher car at the Grudge Autocross heldon the day following close of Parade.)Yan Feng and Frank Noock from RedwoodRegion entered a great-lookingBoxster in the Preparation/Full groupand took home class honors. YosemiteRegion President Paul Czopek took 1 stplace in Class Preparation/Touring 13with his 1997 Boxster.Tuesday was the day for all the rallyists to do their thing. KCand I had fun on the gimmick rally while the more serious membersof our group participated in the TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rally. J.and Jessica Toney (SVR) easily outdistanced the field in the EquippedClass with a total score of 59 (a total error of just over thirty-fiveseconds) for all six legs. Not only were they first in class, they werefirst overall for the rally. Joe and Claudia Budro from Diablo Regioncame in fourth in that class. In the Navigational Class, David Bunch(Redwood) and Sharon Neidel (Golden Gate) took home 11 th place.Jim and Rhonda Ronin (Yosemite) took home 17 th , and Sue Kemperand Cameron Warren (SNR) took the 20 th spot. In the Unequipped-Plus Class, the team of Larry and Greg Adams (GGR) took home 3 rdspot, closely followed by Dave and Betty Pollack (GGR) in 5 th place.Long-time SVR members Tom Sisson and Darlene Byerley placed9 th . All-time Zone 7 Favorites Bud and Mary Ann Behrens, who wonthis class at the 2004 Parade but failed to read the general instructionsclosely, took home modest 22 nd place honors. Top-notch CPA andGolden Gate region member Olen Creech and his son James got anhonorable mention with a 29 th place finish. The Unequipped Classseemed to be the class most of the Zone 7 members entered. At thetop of the Zone 7 pile were Barry and Suzette Pangrle (LPR) in 3 rdplace, followed closely by Mike and Emily Willis (SVR) and Tim andRyan Fleming (SVR) in 6 th and 7 th spots respectively. Richard Wetzeland Delores McKinnon (SVR) earned 20 th place, with autocrossersChris Hamilton and Andrew Blyholder (GGR) trying to not begreedy by taking home 24 th spot.San Diego Region members took their autocross expertise toa new level. The course walk on Tuesday afternoon seemed to takehours to complete. I walked the course two times, and it took mea total of an hour and a half to complete it. The course was about1.25 miles in length and contained uphill, downhill, banked, andoff-camber turns that few other sites in the country could allowfor. It seemed to me that some of the Zone 8 folks were exhibitinga certain cockiness during the course walk. Since they autocross atthis venue year around, maybe they thought their familiarity withthe terrain would give them the upper hand. The cars from Zone8 were very sweet looking; most of them had all the latest and bestequipment. And maybe they thought they would show the countryhow to put on and how to drive a great autocross, which they did. However, the results, as far as the driving aspect was concerned, proved differently. With all of the big names driving the big-time6-cylinder cars and trying their best, they couldn’t keep up with thesmallest car in the Modified Class field. Steve Nieslony (SVR) in10 the drifter

class M01 squeaked past Tom Provasi (LPR) to take TTOD (TopTime of the Day). (For historians, Bill Newlin of GGR, drivinganother 4-cylinder 914, won TTOD when San Diego Regionhosted the 1992 Parade.) The list of Zone 7 Class winners is longand impressive:First Place WinnersClass DriverS03L Lavergne Thomas (DR)S06M Brad Zucroff (GGR)S07L Tish Gleason (DR)S08L Mary Ann Behrens (SVR)S012M Greg Adams (GGR)P01M Kim Nelson (SVR) (by over 20 seconds)P01L Rachael Johnson (SVR)P02L Lisa Laforge (LPR)P05M Miles Smith (GGR)P06M Terry Zaccone (GGR)P07M Ray Fiore (RR)P09M Dave McGuigan (GGR)P09L Carol McNamara (GGR)P15L Rebecca Cranfold (RR)P17L Kiska Icard (GGR)I01M Ted French (DR)I02L Juli Shelton (SVR)M01M Steve Nieslony (SVR)M01L Joy Sease (SVR)M02M Andrew Blyholder (GGR)M04L Sharon Neidel (RR)M05M Tom Provasi (LPR)M05L Sandy Provasi (LPR)Second Place WinnersS03M Mike Lommatzsch (LPR)S08L Christie Bacchus (DR)S12M Larry Adams (GGR)S12L Kay Gardali (YR)P01M Ray Johansen (SVR)P10M Larry Sharp (GGR)P15M Mike Willis (SVR)P17M Ron Halfhill (GGR)M03L Nancy Bishop (GGR)To these and to all the rest of the Zone 7 drivers who participatedin the Parade autocross: GOOD JOB! perseverance and scored 22 points to takeZONEhome 21 st spot. As Past Zone 7 Rep andcurrent Zone 11 Rep, Tim Fleming hadmuch to prove to everyone, and didn’tdisappoint with a first-place showing inthe Late 911 Class. He scored 33 pointsand picked the right class to get a greattrophy. David Bunch tried to look overTim’s shoulder but was too far awayand scored 28 points to take home 7 thspot. Michael Tracy (SVR) rounded outthis field with a score of 22 points to take home 13 th spot. The996/997 Boxster class was well represented with Greg Reschke(GGR) scoring 33 points to win 4 th spot. He was just ahead ofPast National President Tom Bobbitt in 5 th spot. GGR’s VicePresident Bob Murillo had 28 points to take home 9 th position. And somehow Bob found a way to wake up his son Raphael totake a test on his vacation. Raphael scored a 19 th spot with hisscore of 18 points. If you have a Porsche trivia question you need answered, just turn to Dave Darling of LPR who not only won the 914Men’s Class, but also had the highest score overall with fortyonecorrect answers. It was the only Zone 7newsletter entered in the contest to win a trophy this year.It has only been a few days since KC and I have returnedfrom San Diego, and I am still smiling. How much fun it was tospend five days in San Diego with the special group of people inZone 7. Many best wishes to all of Zone 7 members who wentto Parade in San Diego and let the country know “Its not justthe cars, it’s the people.”Till our next meeting, have a safe journey.Holy Porsches!by Rachel Johnsonphotos by John and Penny BirkettFifty-five Porsches, 110 people, and a Porsche collection wecould only wish for. I am talking about the Child’s garagetour that was on July 14, 2007. It was a sold-out event, with almost every kind of Porsche you could think of from 356to 997 and every model in between present. The weather wasa special order from the Porsche gods, who smiles upon us onceagain, provided fantastic food and swimming in an unbelievabletwo-level pool. But, of course, it was the people who attendedand helped put on this great event that mattered the most. Therewere four separate driving tours that led up to Stephen and VickyChild’s home in Placerville and self-led tours of the home’s threegarages, each filled with Porsches.Lunch was tri-tip, macaroni salad, chips, cookies and icecream for dessert. Huge thanks to Stephen and Vicki Childs forletting us take over again this year. Thanks to Rich Swenson,Judy Hanna and Kim Nelson for all their hard work in creatingsuch a successfully fun day. Also, thanks to the tour leaders whodid a fantastic job in getting everyone there, and to Mike Willisfor his assistance with the barbeque. With such great people as we have in our club it is not awonder why our club events are successful. It’s not just the cars,it’s the people.12 the drifter

Mendocino 2007 Tour - November 2 nd through 4 thby Rik LarsonAs of August 1 st thirty-five cars have signed up for this 3-daytour in November. So why such a big push to let peopleknow about an event that is two months away? Becausewe need to secure the rooms with deposits at the three primaryinns we have booked. The 2006 Mendocino tour had more thanfifty cars plus another ten cars from Redwood Region. Reservationsfor one-night stays on the coast are difficult. Contact RikLarson for additional information (see below). We have a block of rooms at the Hill House and the Mac-Callum House in Mendocino, and at the Little River Inn in LittleRiver. The Hill House block is being coordinated by Tom andTambra Kroetz (916.989.1984). The MacCallum House block isbeing coordinated by Frederick D. Rauch (916.989.3199). TheLittle River Inn block is being handled by Rik and Lettie Larson(916.481.6084). Contact the coordinators for additional informationabout the types of rooms remaining, deposits required, cancellation costs, etc. A deposit is required to hold a room atall locations. Cancellation policies are strictly enforced. If youwant to stay an extra day or two, either before or after the group,we will try to make it happen. But we must know NOW if youhave plans to stay extra days. It is easier to reserve the rooms forlonger periods (and then release the days if you don’t want them)than it is to add days to your stay. This is a very informal tour, with the only semi-competitiveevent being a kite-flying contest on Saturday afternoon. Golf(miniature and real), tennis, horseback riding, beach walking, kayaking, etc. are all available on the north coast. We can providemany suggestions as to the area restaurants, wineries, points ofinterest, etc.Driver’s Education EventFriday, September 21, 2007Thunderhill Raceway Park – Willows, CaliforniaFor more information, contact Frederick D. And (youknew this was coming, didn’t you?) how do you suppose that expressiongot started?Well, it goes back hundreds of years to when noblemen hunted wildboars. However, these brave nobles didn’t want to get too close to thesharp-toothed pigs. So the, uh, “noblemen” had young men beat thebushes to flush out the boars to be shot. Now these young guys weren’tstupid. They often evaded danger by beating near or around the bushesinstead of in them, where they were supposed to be, hence the phrase.See, it had nothing to do with the current President, or that, uh otherdefinition you may have heard.Contact your friendly GOODIE STORE people!
