AAP DRAFT VISION AND MISSIONThe draft vision and mission for the AAP have been developed based on feedback from the public surveys and the AgricultureAdvisory Committee. They meet the intent of an Agriculture Area Plan and the principles of the Sustainable Kamloops Plan:Foundation for Sustainability. As the AAP development process moves forward, and further public consultation is achieved, thevision and mission will be solidified.Vision“Continued support and encouragement of an economically, environmentally and socially viable local agricultural sector.”Mission“The City of Kamloops and surrounding region are rich in agricultural history. Years from now, the City of Kamloops is onceagain referred to as an ‘Agricultural Eden’ and a regional hub for the agriculture sector. A thriving, economically viable andresilient local agricultural sector which preserves and optimizes the use of agricultural resources such as land, capital, water,labour and technology is embraced.It is the City’s intent to search for opportunities by which it can promote agriculture as a viable land use and business bysupporting the local agricultural sector, and working with senior levels of government and the community. Building strongerpartnerships and promoting a local agricultural sector that honours our agricultural heritage and the contribution agriculture hashad for the development of the City is crucial.The City aims to support and encourage a local agriculture sector that contributes significantly to:Local food self-sufficiencyLand and resource stewardshipA growing diversified local economyEnsuring land is preserved and put into production for agricultural purposes”CITY OF KAMLOOPS 6
EXPECTED OUTCOMESThe overarching expected outcome of an AAP is that it be formally adopted and used to guide implementation activities. It isexpected that land use plans applied to farmland will be developed from a distinctly agricultural perspective.The AAP will be a starting point in providing a better municipal support system for the local commercial agriculture sector and itwill identify strategies and actions aimed at growing, sustaining and raising awareness about this commercial sector.STAKEHOLDERSApproximately 90 stakeholders have participated in the City's AAP development process in addition to the Agriculture AdvisoryCommittee responsible for leading the development process. Stakeholders are individuals who completed an agriculture survey(producer, consumer, or retailer) in early 2012 and requested to be informed of the development as it moves along. Additionalstakeholders have been added to the list as more people and organizations within the City are made aware of the developmentof the AAP through the City’s website, by word of mouth, and news releases in the local papers.As the process moves along, stakeholders have been made aware of the following:Current developments concerning the AAP’s development (input on thesedevelopments is encouraged from the group); andOpportunities for public consultation including road show presentations andopen houses.In addition to the stakeholder list and upcoming public consultation opportunities,residents have an opportunity to be involved via the AAP Facebook page and theAAP webpages.CITY OF KAMLOOPS 7
