With support from <strong>City</strong> Council and School District No. 73, <strong>the</strong> first market was held in 1978. 35 years later, <strong>the</strong> market isthriving and continues to be an inspiration, as it is a great ga<strong>the</strong>ring place to make and/or meet friends and exchange ideas, aswell as a place to share mutual passions <strong>for</strong> food and community.More in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kamloops</strong> Farmers' Market can be found at www.kamloopsfarmersmarket.com.Training, Education, and AwarenessVenture <strong>Kamloops</strong>, <strong>the</strong> economic development agency <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kamloops</strong>, provides a summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> educationalinstitutions available in <strong>Kamloops</strong> related to <strong>the</strong> agriculture industry. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are included below.Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre:The Centre, located on Ord Road, is part <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's network <strong>of</strong> research centres in Canada.Research covers national agricultural priorities in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> horticultural and field crop production and protection.Thompson Rivers University (TRU):The University's new Centre <strong>for</strong> Innovation in Ranching, Range and Meat Production has been developed to facilitate researchand development to help ranchers, producers and suppliers adopt new technologies that support <strong>sustainable</strong> ranching practices.Also <strong>of</strong>fered at TRU is a culinary arts program that educates students about <strong>the</strong> local food system. Both <strong>the</strong> meat productionprogram and <strong>the</strong> culinary arts program purchase local foods <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir purposes.Thompson Shuswap Chef Farmer Collaborative:The Thompson-Shuswap Chef Farmer Collaborative (TSCFC) <strong>for</strong>med in 2010, with Ed Walker, Chef Instructor at ThompsonRivers University as its director.The group <strong>for</strong>med a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it society with a mission <strong>of</strong> connecting local farms with local restaurants, and helping move locallygrown food from seed to plate. The collaborative is also supporting farmers and food security organizations through grantprograms.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main goals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> TSCFC is to bring awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> goodness <strong>of</strong> local food to <strong>the</strong> region through education,entertainment and edible delights.CITY OF KAMLOOPS 39
