PrusinerKeynotes ASNR 2014Our Keynote Speaker this year is Dr. Stanley Prusiner, aname that is, I am sure, familiar to nearly all of you. Dr.Prusiner is Director of the Institute for NeurodegenerativeDiseases and Professor of Neurology at the University ofCalifornia, San Francisco.Although he has won innumerable important scientificawards, the award for which Dr. Prusiner became ahousehold name is, of course, the Nobel Prize in Medicine, which he received in 1997 for his discovery and work onprions, infectious proteins that are formed when normalcellular proteins acquire an altered shape. The concept ofinfectious proteins, as well as the idea that single proteinscould exist in multiple biologically active shapes orconformations, was highly controversial at the time. Hisearly work centered around specific diseases, in particular, kuru and Jakob Creutzfeldt disease. However, he hassince extended his theories to some of the mostwidespread diseases in our society, the neurodegenerativediseases of Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and some forms of frontotemporal dementia and ALS.Dr. Prusiner has predicted a prion etiology for thesecommon degenerative diseases based on his discoverythat prions can assemble into amyloid fibrils.Food Service:• Saturday & Sunday: ASNR will provideMorning & Afternoon Beverage Breaks.Breakfast & Lunch on own• Monday through Thursday: ASNR willprovide Morning & Afternoon Breaks,Breakfast, and Lunch• New in 2014: Food Vouchers will be given toASNR attendees Monday - Thursday forBreakfast and LunchRegistration Fee also includes:• ASNR Annual Meeting Proceedings onThe Cloud• Food Service• Annual Meeting Opening Reception withTechnical Exhibitors on Monday EveningFurther work integrating Dr. Pruisner’s work withneuroimaging will be explored in the Keynote session.Recent studies have used fMRI to compare atrophypatterns in several neurodegenerative diseases withhealthy resting-state networks, showing that proteindeposition diseases appear to target large-scale brainnetworks. These results support a transneuronal spreadhypothesis, as would be typical of prion related diseases.Gordon K. Sze, MD, FACRASNR 2014 Program Chair and President Elect3

Study Groups and WorkshopsASNR introduces the Study Groups. The study groups target areas of critical importance to the field ofNeuroradiology and are composed of neuroradiologists, neuroscientists, and investigators from associateddisciplines, who are united in their interest in higher level, sophisticated investigations of these target areas. The target areas that have been selected are cerebrospinal fluid flow, tumor genomics, vessel wall imaging, and the clinical translation of fMRI and DTI. These four study groups will present their work to date at anASNR session on Tuesday, May 22, 2014. In addition, they will have working meetings on either Wednesday,May 21, 2014 evening or on Friday, May 23, 2014.ASNR introduces the fMRI Workshops. The workshops are intended to provide a hands-on experiencethat allows participants to translate knowledge learned at the ASNR meeting into direct experience that willenable them to perform these studies when they return to their practices. There will be two workshops, onethat is more clinically oriented and that is intended for novices and one that is aimed at more advancedpractitioners who are interested in pursuing research applications. No CME credit will be awarded for the Study Groups or WorkshopsOptional Introductory fMRI and DiffusionTractography Hands-On WorkshopSunday, May 18, 2014, 8:00am - 5:00pmDuring most MRI procedures, there is no need forinteraction between the administrator of the test and thepatient. The situation is quite the opposite in functionalMRI (fMRI), where the neurological status of the patientmust be assessed; an appropriate paradigm must beselected based on the neurological assessment and priorMRI examinations. Further, the paradigm must bedelivered to and successfully performed by the patientwhile in the MRI machine. In addition, there is a rathercomplicated analysis of the fMRI and diffusion tractographydata, which must be performed and assessed. How toproperly perform these tasks is often not addressedduring residency and fellowship training or in annualscientific society meetings. The ASNR Imaging Genomics Study GroupWednesday, May 21, 2014, 6:30pm - 8:00pmThe ASNR Imaging Genomics Study Group serves as aunified voice and body for advancing the clinical andresearch applications of imaging genomics. For thismission the study group is working on the developmentand validation of imaging genomics biomarkers andbiomarker signatures. We will be opening an Image-Guided, Image-Registered (IGIR) Stereotactic Brain BiopsyMulti-center Clinical Trial that seeks to validate imaginggenomics and subsequently metabolomics and proteomicsusing standardized IGIR biopsies, imaging protocols andgenomic collection and analysis. We are also focusing onthe need for standardization of imaging across vendors, software platforms, post-processing techniques, etc. andon enhancing awareness and multidisciplinarycollaboration among the imaging and non-imagingcommunities to advance imaging genomic analyses withinthese fields. The ASNR Imaging Genomics Study Groupwill also publish the ASNR Imaging Genomics WhitePaper exploring the current state and future directions ofimaging genomics in brain tumors.Additional registration fees will apply for the Study Groups and Workshops. If you are interested in more detailsabout the Study Groups and Workshops, please visit www.asnr.org/2014ASNR Study Group for the ClinicalTranslation of Functional andDiffusion MRIWednesday, May 21, 2014, 6:30pm - 8:00pmThe ASNR Study Group for the Clinical Translation of fMRIand DTI represents an international multidisciplinaryendeavor to identify critical knowledge gaps that must beaddressed to translate these advanced neuroimagingtechniques into sensitive/specific clinical tools for thediagnosis of diseases affecting the brain. The study groupis comprised of representatives from neuroradiology, neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, and theneurosciences, thereby leveraging a broad interdisciplinaryperspective to develop a strategic framework of key actionitems to address these knowledge gaps. To this end, thegroup has been organized to focus on two primary aims:1) To investigate the reproducibility of functional andadvanced diffusion MRI techniques, which is necessaryfor translation of these methods into robust diagnosticimaging tools, and 2) To review and disseminate thecurrent evidence to date supporting the use of functionaland advanced diffusion MRI methods in clinical practice. With regard to aim 1, the study group has recentlypartnered with the Quantitative Imaging BiomarkersAlliance (QIBA) of the Radiological Society of NorthAmerica, as well as the Research Committee of theAmerican College of Radiology Head Trauma Institute toconduct multi-center reproducibility studies of specificfMRI and diffusion imaging techniques. With regard toaim 2, the study group has begun to develop a series ofwhite papers to systematically review evidence supportingthe use of functional and advanced diffusion MRItechniques in clinical practice. Additional manuscriptsare also being developed to review the methodologicalbreadth of diffusion imaging and evidence supportingthe clinical utility of advanced diffusion imagingtechniques, as applied to a single clinical entity (e.g.,traumatic brain injury, preterm birth, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, etc). By disseminating the findings, conclusions, and consensus of the study group, we hopeto ultimately advance the diagnostic capability of cuttingedgefunctional and advanced diffusion MRI techniquesto improve the lives of the patients we serve.6

This is nota small amount of money. ASNR ischarged the room rate plus tax for everyroom below our contracted numbers. As a part of ASNR plan for eliminatingattrition, the Advanced Housing Depositpolicy was implemented in 2002 alongwith review of all future hotel contracts, reductions in the contracted hotel roomblocks to better reflect current usepatterns, and weekly monitoring ofhotel reservations for the current year’smeeting. This plan has been successful in helpingASNR limit the financial burden resultingfrom high attrition fees. The amount ofthe last-minute cancellations and noshowshas decreased significantly inrecent years. As a result, the amount ofattrition fees charged to ASNR has alsodecreased. The forfeited funds resultingfrom Advanced Housing Deposit policyhas enabled ASNR to pay incurredattrition fees.If you should have any questionsconcerning these policies in effect forthe ASNR 52nd Annual Meeting, pleasecontact:Advance Room Depositof Two (2) Nights$480.00 USDAs of 11/11/2013, total of 5% federal tax (GST), 9.975% provincial tax(PST) and 3.5% lodging tax per room/per nightLora Tannehill, CMPASNR Director of Scientific Meetings630-574-0220 ext. 2299
