Figure 2.4: Forward and Backward Resource <strong>Management</strong> Cells (FRMs and BRMs)<br />

queue length, and sequence number elds of <strong>the</strong> RM cells are <strong>for</strong> compatibility with<br />

<strong>the</strong> ITU-T recommendation I.371 and are not used by <strong>the</strong> ATM Forum.<br />

The Current Cell <strong>Rate</strong> (CCR) eld is used by <strong>the</strong> source to <strong>in</strong>dicate to <strong>the</strong> net-<br />

work its current rate. Some switches may use <strong>the</strong> CCR eld to determ<strong>in</strong>e a VC's<br />

next allocation while o<strong>the</strong>rs may measure <strong>the</strong> VC's rate and not trust CCR. The<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum cell rate (MCR) eld is redundant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that like PCR, ICR, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r parameters it does not change dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> life of a connection. However, its<br />

presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> RM cells reduces number of lookups required <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> switch.<br />

The ER, CI and NI elds are used by <strong>the</strong> network to give feedback to <strong>the</strong> sources.<br />

The ER eld <strong>in</strong>dicates <strong>the</strong> maximum rate allowed to <strong>the</strong> source. When <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

multiple switches along <strong>the</strong> path, <strong>the</strong> feedback given by <strong>the</strong> most congested l<strong>in</strong>k is<br />

<strong>the</strong> one that reaches <strong>the</strong> source.<br />
