ER <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ward and backward directions. It assumes that <strong>the</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

resets <strong>the</strong> ER eld to <strong>the</strong> peak cell rate (PCR), which isnotmandated by <strong>the</strong> tra c<br />

management standard. S<strong>in</strong>ce it derives from <strong>the</strong> properties of <strong>the</strong> MIT scheme, it is<br />

fair. The sett<strong>in</strong>g of feedback <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ward and backward directions improves<br />

<strong>the</strong> response of <strong>the</strong> scheme compared to <strong>the</strong> MIT scheme. Ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g aspect<br />

is that due to <strong>the</strong> bidirectional ER sett<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong> resett<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum of ER elds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ward and backward directions gives <strong>the</strong> current<br />

bottleneck rate <strong>for</strong> that VC.<br />

4.12.2 Discussion<br />

Though given <strong>the</strong> above <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g aspects, <strong>the</strong> scheme has several drawbacks:<br />

It reta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> O(N) complexity of <strong>the</strong> MIT scheme. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ER<br />

calculation at <strong>the</strong> receipt of both <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ward and backward RM cells <strong>in</strong>creases<br />

<strong>the</strong> computation burden on <strong>the</strong> switch.<br />

The scheme does no load measurement, and as a result may not work if <strong>the</strong><br />

sources are bottlenecked at rates below <strong>the</strong>ir allocations.<br />

The scheme does not measure <strong>the</strong> number of active VCs, and uses <strong>the</strong> (static)<br />

total number of VCs <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> computation.<br />

The scheme is <strong>in</strong>compatible with <strong>the</strong> ATM Forum's Tra c <strong>Management</strong> 4.0<br />

speci cation s<strong>in</strong>ce it requires <strong>the</strong> ER to be reset by <strong>the</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

It is not clear how <strong>the</strong> scheme accounts <strong>for</strong> variable capacity, especially <strong>the</strong><br />

handl<strong>in</strong>g of queues which build up dur<strong>in</strong>g transient phases.<br />
