Based on the collected data, the president <strong>of</strong> the BSD, Dr. Marcio Rutowitsh, organizeda series <strong>of</strong> meetings with young dermatologists with less than ten years <strong>of</strong> trainingin order to discuss the outlook for the pr<strong>of</strong>ession, and thus strengthen theparticipation <strong>of</strong> the BSD in support <strong>of</strong> the field.At the same time, the BSD is promoting a review in the Anais Brasileiros <strong>of</strong> Dermatologiawith the purpose <strong>of</strong> attaining the reorganization <strong>of</strong> the data base, Índex Medicus/Medline.The degree <strong>of</strong> specialist in <strong>Dermatology</strong>Since 1950, under Law No. 1,270, the BSD is considered <strong>of</strong> public interest. Twentythreeyears went by between the holding <strong>of</strong> the first meeting <strong>of</strong> Brazilian specialists indermatology and syphilography, in 1944, and the other great event in the history <strong>of</strong> theentity, in 1967: the examination <strong>of</strong> the first physicians to obtain the degree <strong>of</strong> specialistin <strong>Dermatology</strong>, held in Juiz de Fora. The pr<strong>of</strong>essors who took that first exam were: TancredoFurtado, Clovis Bopp, Rubem David Azulay, Rui Noronha de Miranda and SebastiãoSampaio (delegate to the AMB) (Figure 12).In 2005, the thirty-ninth specialist degree exam <strong>of</strong> the BSD took place, under the presidency<strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dr. Paulo R. Cunha.Services certified by the BSDThe scope <strong>of</strong> services certified nationwide by the Brazilian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> iscomposed <strong>of</strong> seventy units. This shows the maturity <strong>of</strong> the specialized field in the country,providing broad care for millions <strong>of</strong> patients with cutaneous diseases. In additon to204 annual vacancies for medical internships, and specialization, there are master’s andPhD degrees in its graduate courses.Regional UnitsNORTH-NORTHEASTBahiaBahia, the cradle <strong>of</strong> dermatology in the country, currently has two services certifiedby the BSD: that <strong>of</strong> the Hospital das Clínicas (UFBA), and that <strong>of</strong> the St. IsabelHospital at the Bahia School <strong>of</strong> Public Health and Medicine.88
